I want you to hear directly from me how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting our services. The first thing you should know is that we continue to pay benefits. Be aware that scammers may try to trick you into thinking the pandemic is stopping your Social Security payments but that is not true. Don’t be fooled.

To protect you and help stop the spread of this coronavirus, we cannot accept visitors in our offices at this time. There are several other ways you can get help. Many services are available online. If you have a critical need that you cannot address online, we can help you over the phone.

Please visit our website to find out what services we are continuing and which ones we are suspending, how to contact us, and important information about deadlines we are extending to ease the burden on you and medical providers during this pandemic.

You can subscribe to receive email or text message notifications. Please share this information with your family and friends to help us spread the word.

how can I show unemployment online my as number if I do not have one

  5. Linda R.

    Dear Commissioner Saul,
Hello. My name is Linda Jones. I know you are a very busy man.
I should have been receiving unemployment since 3/27/2020. I work for a retail company that put us on furlough due to Covid shut down. This company pays on a card. It has been a nightmare getting the ADP to work. Finally, an HR person got me in the app yesterday.

I believe I can now file for Unemployment benefits.

I am living way below poverty. I need all the help I can possibly obtain. My question to you, sir, is should I keep trying to get in touch with SSA, or should I go directly to the closest office. I live in Canton, TX 75103. I believe the most near office to me is in Tyler, TX.
Sorry to bother you. Perhaps you can advise me.
Thank you in advance for your assistance and consideration.
    Sincerely,
    Linda Jones

Hi Linda, thanks for using our blog. We are unable to answer questions about unemployment insurance as each state administers its own program. Learn more here.

I turn 60 in 2020. I understand from my financial advisor that the current unemployment crisis caused by COVID 19 will dramatically drop the average wage in 2020 and, therefore, will likely negatively effect my future SS benefit calculations and for all those born in 1960. Are there accommodations or changes being made to the “national average wage index” for those of us born in 1960?

    When will you offices reopen?

    • V.V.

Hi Henri, thanks for using our blog. Our offices remain closed to the public for face-to-face service. We are still able to provide critical services via phone, fax and online. For more information and to subscribe for updates, visit here. Thanks!

I Don’t mind applying online for social security benefit but will not send my certificate of naturalization via mail as I was asked. I’m trying to retire but can’t. My sister lost her paper from Homeland security when applying for a passport. This took one year and cost her 450:00 dollars. It should be a better way to send this type of document. Specially when they only want the original. There no guaranty they won’t get lost in the mail.
    Please solve this problem.

  9. Mariam L.

I need to apply for a new social security card, because I recently got my green card, but they don’t have that service online I’ve been calling all the offices near me, and just tell me I have to wait to offices reopen and I’m desperate because without the social security card I can’t do anything.

    • V.V.

Hi Mariam, thanks for using our blog. We continue to process Social Security Numbers and issue cards for certain lawful immigrants, we call these processes Enumeration at Entry (EAE) and Enumeration beyond Entry(EBE).

If these automated processes are not available to you, we may be able to offer an in-office appointment for a new card request based on available staff and office operating status. Please call your local office to see if an in-office appointment is necessary and possible. To contact your local office, please look for the local office telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator under “Social Security Office Information” for the office you select. The toll-free “Office” number is your local office.
