A Constant Quest to Improve Our Online Services

Our online services make it possible for you to conduct business with us when and where it’s convenient for you. Our goal is to provide you with world-class service and our online services are a convenient, cost-effective, and secure way for us to better serve you. 

On our website, you can apply for retirement, spouse’s, disability, and Medicare benefits. You can use our benefit planners to calculate your future benefits. You can also find answers to your frequently asked questions. You can even apply for Extra Help to pay for the costs—monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments—related to a Medicare prescription drug plan.

In addition, by opening a personal my Social Security account, you can keep track of your earnings and verify them every year by reviewing your Social Security Statement. You can get an instant benefit verification letter or one stating that you don’t currently receive benefits, never received benefits, or are waiting for an answer on your application for benefits.

If you receive benefits, you also can:

  • Change your address or telephone number;
  • Start or change your direct deposit;
  • Get a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S for your taxes; and
  • Replace your Medicare card.

We frequently review our online services looking for new and useful enhancements to meet our customers’ changing needs. Your feedback is important to us when deciding how we can better serve you, so use this blog to let us know.

We continue to use updated technology and innovative ideas to expand our online services at www.socialsecurity.gov. And although our online services can be handled easily from the comfort of your home or office, our in-person services are still available to you. We are committed to meeting your needs and preferences in how you like to conduct business with us.

To reach this hotline, call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk”. Sometime, it may be best to contact your local Social Security office. Thanks!

    Can I make an appt to register for Medicare by going online?

      Hello Karen. We currently do not have an online appointment scheduler. However you do not need an appointment to file for benefits, you can file for Medicare ONLY benefits online. If you do not want to apply for benefits online, or you need to speak to us for any other reason, you can schedule, reschedule or cancel an appointment by:
      •Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or
      •Contacting your local Social Security office. Thanks!

      Hello Ricardo. When you live outside the United States, periodically we’ll send you a questionnaire (Form SSA-7162). Your answers will help us figure out if you still are eligible for benefits. The form is sent with a return envelope, you need to return the completed questionnaire to the office that sent it as soon as possible. Generally, we mail the questionnaire in May through June of each year. Recipients are required to respond within 60 days.
      In addition to responding to the questionnaire, notify us promptly about changes that could affect your payments.
      We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefits Unit in their area, for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Thanks!

    i have tried to sign in many times you keep saying its the wrong information and its not, so how do we get in sync with one another?

    i got a letter that its easy to complete the annual report for payee online and i am looking around now and searching for over 2 hours this is rediculous how hard it is. I have a degree in CIS, so it’s NOT the USER, its your website stinks

      Hello Francisco. We do not have access to personal information, therefore, we do not do direct messaging in this venue. We currently do not have an online appointment scheduler. You can schedule an appointment by:
      •Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or
      •Contacting your local Social Security office.
      However you do not need an appointment to file for benefits or appeal a disability decision. You can file for the following benefits online:
      Retirement;
      Medicare;
      Spouses; and
      Disability.
