Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding beginning October 1, 2025. Until further notice, the federal government is shut down. We know you have questions and will do our best to answer them.

We want you to know that during the federal government shutdown, payments to all people who currently receive Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will continue with no change in payment dates. You will still receive your payments on time.

To help you manage your benefits and access important services, we encourage you to create an online my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. With a personal my Social Security account, you can view benefit estimates, request a proof of income letter, apply for benefits, request a replacement Social Security card or Medicare card, and much more. It’s easy, convenient, and secure.

Our local offices will remain open to the public but will provide reduced services. During this time, we can help you:

  • Apply for benefits
  • Request an appeal
  • Change your address or direct deposit information
  • Report a death
  • Verify or change your citizenship status
  • Replace a lost or missing Social Security payment
  • Obtain a critical payment
  • Change a representative payee
  • Make a change in your living arrangement or income (SSI recipients only)
  • Obtain a new or replacement Social Security card

Hearings offices remain open to conduct hearings before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). Please be aware that we may not be able to assist with all in-person service requests at this time. For example, we cannot provide proof of benefits letters, or update or correct earnings records. These in-person services will resume when the federal government is operating normally.

When the shutdown ends, we will post updates on our official social media accounts, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Instagram. For more information on the government shutdown, visit www.ssa.gov/agency/shutdown.

I just paid my overpayment off as of Oct. 2025. I had them deduct $200 out of my monthly payment. So, this month I was supposed to get my regular payment and guess what, i didnt get it and thy took $80 extra out of the amount was getting so thats $280 thy shorted me. Then with the government shut down you cant get in touch with anyone. I hope the people that voted for the new president are happy. He has caused nothing but trouble since he was voted back into office.

Maybe you should contact you Democratic office and ask them why they are stalling? They are responsible for the shut down. They want to give immigrants money and not worried about you at all. Has nothing to do with “him”

You need to do a fact check on that one because it is against the law to give undocumented people anything from the government. That’s why if they come here illegally they move in with families or people they know. Because they have no money or anything and don’t get any unless they find a employer that will hire them with no papers or ITN#…..

It is the Democrats that are refusing to open the Government. They want 1.5 trillion dollars to give to illegal immigrants for their health care, and it would come straight out of American’s taxes and Social Security benefits. The President doesn’t want that to happen and since the Democrats won’t budge, you are seeing what impact is happening. The Democrat shut down is why things with Social Security and other American programs like Medicare and Medicaid are being unresolved, inaccurate and confusing. If you want the Democratic taking more of your money, by all mean join them and demand ILLEGAL immigrants get your money.

You are not much on critical thinking? You sound like a mouth peace rehearsed to say exactly what Trump says. It would be fine if you actually had a document to refer too that states those facts. But you do t it’s pure conjecture to place blame. Have you read his Bill? I’m going to say no. But what is true is our health care benefits are going to expire and nearly triple in monthly premiums. That’s a fact straight from my insurance company I have to cancel my insurance because I can’t afford just like millions of Americans. That’s another fact. Read and critically think before you spout nonsense that can’t be proven.

I am locked out of the “so well-loved” website. Of course, they do (never) answer the dang phone. It’s hours on hold, or they just “aren’t taking calls at this (or that) time.” They SOMETIMES (VERY) rarely have the “call you back,” but not for years, that I’m aware. What a crock.

Oct. 2, my direct deposit SSDI came a day early, (usually the 3rd for over 20 years)
And it’s $500 SHORT. I checked my socialsecurity.Gov account and there’s no information why my amount is short.
This is financially devastating for me.

Will this shutdown effect payments and date of official COLA for 2026 increase? When will the exact COLA percentage become official and be announced on ssa.gov or by mail?

Day of the shutdown SSA canceled my next 2 payments citing incorrect income estimates. The figure is far from accurate ($10,000 error) and no explanation on the source was offered.

With two weeks notice, I’m scrambling to pay bills.

After 50 years of paying into the system and considering the millions of fraudulent checks going out, I question the focus on my legitimate retirement payments.

Hello Sherry, I just read your message regarding your ss account and it’s a sin that so many people who depend on social security are left to suffer while the **government ** squabbles over pennies. I am on ssdi and am worried about mine being deposited when it’s supposed to but my son who is on ssdi DID GET his payments on his usual date, with the exception of it being 1 day late. Keep checking your account and with God’s grace you’ll receive it any day.
