Congress failed to reach an agreement on funding beginning October 1, 2025. Until further notice, the federal government is shut down. We know you have questions and will do our best to answer them.

We want you to know that during the federal government shutdown, payments to all people who currently receive Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will continue with no change in payment dates. You will still receive your payments on time.

To help you manage your benefits and access important services, we encourage you to create an online my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/. With a personal my Social Security account, you can view benefit estimates, request a proof of income letter, apply for benefits, request a replacement Social Security card or Medicare card, and much more. It’s easy, convenient, and secure.

Our local offices will remain open to the public but will provide reduced services. During this time, we can help you:

  • Apply for benefits
  • Request an appeal
  • Change your address or direct deposit information
  • Report a death
  • Verify or change your citizenship status
  • Replace a lost or missing Social Security payment
  • Obtain a critical payment
  • Change a representative payee
  • Make a change in your living arrangement or income (SSI recipients only)
  • Obtain a new or replacement Social Security card

Hearings offices remain open to conduct hearings before an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). Please be aware that we may not be able to assist with all in-person service requests at this time. For example, we cannot provide proof of benefits letters, or update or correct earnings records. These in-person services will resume when the federal government is operating normally.

When the shutdown ends, we will post updates on our official social media accounts, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and Instagram. For more information on the government shutdown, visit www.ssa.gov/agency/shutdown.

Why, when I applied in 2024 for my Widow Survivor check , the lady whom did my request for widow survivor check also requested that I be given back pay to begin January of 2023 to February of 2024 then I was APPROVED BUT THEN QUICKLY DENIED for not having “raised seal” on my paperwork. And so I went to courthouse and got paperwork with “raised seal”, and due to serious health issues didn’t reapply until May of 2025. I then was approved again BUT my back pay only went back 6 months instead of going back to when I FIRST APPLIED IN JANUARY OF 2023. ? I filed an appeal and have been denied this back pay issue.

This update is very helpful thank you for clarifying how services will continue during the shutdown. It’s reassuring to know Social Security and SSI payments won’t be affected. Clear communication like this really highlights the importance of having reliable systems in place. In my work, we use a custom CRM to manage client updates and communications during uncertain times like these it’s been invaluable for keeping everything organized and transparent.

I have last three messages, but I have not received any response. It’s been two weeks. Why someone should be monitoring the emails that come in because no one answers the phone.

How long does it take for someone to get a approval on non medical. When a said person was already approved for physical disability. And the letter was received in August 2025. I hope someone can answer this for me so my friend has answers and yes they are homeless as well. They have worked since they where 13 yrs old and they are 51 just to put that in. Thank you in advance for any answers.

You may find answers on a SocSec disability podcast by Walter Hnot. You can find him on YouTube. He answers questions and probably already has a video that will help. I’m a disabled veteran that found his advice helpful.

You should be, since the shutdown appears to affect mostly new applications. Be careful with scammers. Doubt genuine responses will provide links! Be safe.
