What Day of the Month Do I Get my Social Security Payment?
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 3, 2023
Timing is everything, and the arrival time of your monthly payment from Social Security can be key to keeping your financial house in order.
As you budget to pay your bills and save for future needs, keep in mind that your monthly retirement or disability benefit will be paid at the same time each month. To see your next payment date, create or log on to your my Social Security online account and go to the “Benefits & Payments” section.
In general, here’s how we assign payment dates:
- If you were born on the 1st through the 10th of the month, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday of the month.
- If you were born on the 11th through the 20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the third Wednesday of the month.
- If you were born after the 20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
There are exceptions. For example, children and spouses who receive benefits based on someone else’s work record will be paid on the same day as the primary beneficiary.
For others, we may issue your payments on the 3rd of each month. Among other reasons, we do this if:
- You filed for benefits before May 1, 1997.
- You also receive a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment.
- Your Medicare premiums are paid for by the state where you live.
- You live in a foreign country.
Individuals who receive SSI payments due to disability, age, or blindness receive those payments on the 1st of each month.
If your payment date falls on a federal holiday or weekend, you can expect to receive that month’s payment on the weekday immediately prior.
You can see a current schedule for Social Security and SSI benefit payments in an easy-to-read calendar.

Hello, my question is, I pay my bills every month through our bank online and have it set up ahead of time for the monies paid to our creditors. I need to know, and I’m retired with SSDI with a direct deposit, which I have been doing many years. I wanted to make sure we are still getting our regular check on the 3rd of May? Or do I need to hold off with my schedule bank payments until we know for sure? I hate to pay my mortgage, and then the money won’t be there as usual, like every 3rd or 1st of the month? I just wanted to be sure with everything going on right now?
Thank you, and P.S. My wife received her retirement on her regular date last Wednesday.

Why haven’t I received my #1200.00 payment yet?
V.V.
Hi Lyman, thank you for using our blog to ask your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

In January I set up my social security to start in May. I do not see any response on it yet? How close to May do I need to wait before I check further on it?
V.V.

My husband died February.10th. He got his last check $1534. February 12. They withdrew $1534 from our account March 11. Wasn’t this actually January money paid in February that they took?
V.V.
We are very sorry for your loss. Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due. Based on the date of death, your husband was due the payment deposited in February but not the payment deposited in March. If the financial institution automatically returned the deposit in February, we can pay that amount to a family member or legal representative of the estate. If an underpayment is due on his record, you will need to contact Social Security. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

I normally receive my SSI at the latest the third of every month, but I have been checking my bank account and still haven’t received anything. I just don’t understand what’s going on with my SSI.

Hi Geneva, thank you for using our blog. To report non-receipt of a payment, please call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. We hope this helps.
