Timing is everything, and the arrival time of your monthly payment from Social Security can be key to keeping your financial house in order.
As you budget to pay your bills and save for future needs, keep in mind that your monthly retirement or disability benefit will be paid at the same time each month. To see your next payment date, create or log on to your my Social Security online account and go to the “Benefits & Payments” section.
In general, here’s how we assign payment dates:
- If you were born on the 1st through the 10th of the month, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday of the month;
- If you were born on the 11th through the 20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the third Wednesday of the month; and
- If you were born after the 20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
There are exceptions. For example, children and spouses who receive benefits based on someone else’s work record will be paid on the same day as the primary beneficiary.
For others, we may issue your payments on the 3rd of each month. Among other reasons, we do this if:
- You filed for benefits before May 1, 1997;
- You also receive a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment;
- Your Medicare premiums are paid for by the state where you live; or
- You live in a foreign country.
Individuals who receive SSI payments due to disability, age, or blindness receive those payments on the 1st of each month.
If your payment date falls on a federal holiday or weekend, you can expect to receive that month’s payment on the weekday immediately prior.
You can see a current schedule for Social Security and SSI benefit payments in an easy-to-read calendar.

Is the payment 1 month in the arrears? In other words, if I was born on the 24th of a month, I would expect to receive my payment for May on the 4th Wednesday of June, right?
Will my social security benefit will be change from the 2wednesday to the 3 of each month
Can you change to a payment date that helps match monthly bills due?
Hi, Barry. No, you cannot change it. It is based on the birthday of the person on whose record you receive benefits. For more information, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks!
Rent is due on the 1St of month not the 3rd , 4th Wednesday. i am late every month.
That is my issue also. I cannot afford to pay a month in advance, so mortgage is always late. Bank wont change their past due date either.

I have a question please ok!! My question to you is I am a widow! What is different is I’ve been drawing dissabilty since 2008 I am 56 years old ok in August 6, 2017 my husband died he was already drawing his dissabilty and had been for several years when he died they took all of his check except for 240.00 monthly he was drawing close to 1,400 monthly when he died ok so I draw 1,089.00 a month from my record and I also get 240.00 or 245.00 a month from him so with the 2 checks 1 off my record and 1 off of his I draw close to 1,300.00 a month what I’m saying is we were both drawing our dissabilty before he died is this correct? I’m not sure on this and I would like to know please! I’m thinking that I would be able to draw more since I was already drawing my dissabilty before he died or will I draw this for so long and then when I get 60 or so will it change then and I I would draw more?? I would appreciate any input you could give me because I can’t get a straight answer from the social security office I would really appreciate any input you have please! Are you a member of the US Government Social Security Administration or a private company? Why would you ask about the timing of my SS payments each month and then proceed to ask personal info to set up my Social Security Account with you?
SSA, you say I will receive my SS at the same time each month, whether most of my expenses HAVE TO BE PAID around the 1st of the month – but I receive it on the 3rd Wednesday, which varies from the 15th through 21st. Since the first is when all but three of my expenses are due, I end up with NSFs of $35 on each one which has cost me almost a third of my SS in some months. Have tried to change to a various date, but only my landlord will wait without charge to me. But I don’t qualify for a change to the 1st of the month. When I first retired, it was on the first. Then SSA went to Congress stating they wanted to change the date as we have now because people was getting beaten so thugs could get their checks. Then two years later, we had to have direct deposits – but they kept the same payment day – 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month. Of course, then we got Obama and we didn’t get a increase in COLA for 10 years. The 1 “increase” we got (0.38%) actually cost me $2/month. The increase the first year of Trump of 2.0% was set by Obama and resulted in all of that increase went to pay Medicare. It is time that we get an increase that we would have received if the government had paid interest instead of stealing it. We would be getting at least double to triple what we get down.
I have been getting calls from “Social Security” and if I do not dial a phone number, they are going to put me in jail.
Hi, Thomas. Keep in mind we do not usually make random calls. If anyone receives calls saying that they are from Social Security, do not give out any personal information. Suspicious calls should be reported to the Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or online. You can also report these scams to the Federal Trade Commission through a new site specific to Social Security scams, here. We hope this helps.
Thanks for this information; I am new to this and I wasn’t sure. When I first applied I was told one thing and then I received documentation in the mail stating a different amount (less) and it arrives on a different date. So, thank you for this info.
I asked for an estimate of my SS benefits at the age of 70…seems like weeks ago and I still haven’t gotten it. Can you check and see where it is please?

If disability payments are coming on the 3rd, will payments continue to come on the 3rd when disability shifts into retirement, even if retirement would otherwise come later in the month? If not, how is the transition made?
Hi. Thanks for your question. When you reach full retirement age, we will automatically convert your disability benefits to retirement benefits, but the amount remains the same as well as the payment date. Also, starting the month you reach retirement age, you will get benefits with no limit on your earnings. We hope this helps.
If my husband passes, what amount of his SS would I get?
Hi, Penelope. Good question! The amount of your widow or widower benefit is based on several factors, including: the earnings of the person who died, when the deceased worker started receiving their benefits, your age at the time of your spouse’s death, and the amount of your own retirement benefit. We compare your own benefit with your potential survivor benefit. If your survivor benefit would be higher than your own current retirement benefit at the time of your spouse’s passing, you would be eligible for survivor benefits. For more information, visit here. Thanks!

My check comes on the first; my husband and sons both come on the 2nd Wednesdays. I tell my creditors that they must allow us to pay our bills on the 20th of the month because of the way Social Security pays us. Most of our creditors have no idea that there is a specific pattern for payment.
I receive my check on the second Wednesday of every month. However, on one side of the situation I have asked for a earlier time and the other side aking payments to be changed until the ck is received!
SS is top, easy to access and giving all info needed.

can i change my pay date to the 1st. of the month ?
Hi, George. No, you cannot change it. It is based on the birthday of the person on whose record you receive benefits. For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks!
Thumbs down on the payment schedule!👎 why not pay on the date of birth. Always the same day, easier to make payments. Too much flexing between, wait a week or more longer until SS payment arrives. When I was paid once a week I paid every Friday, every two weeks I was paid on Friday, and when I got paid once a month it was on the first of the month. Make it so that we get our checks/deposits on the date of birth day.
I’ve been made aware, thanks
i am allways thankfull for your service never better
I was under the impression.. After you turn 70 you didn’t have to pay taxes on your social security. Is this true?
Hi, Shirley. Thanks for your question. The Federal Insurance and Self-Employment Contribution Acts (FICA and SECA) require the withholding of taxes from wages of employed people, and the net earnings of most self-employed people, for the Social Security and Medicare programs. To learn more about FICA and SECA, please visit here. We hope this helps.
How soon after SS application is completed online, do I start receiving benefits? Mine are payable on the third Wednesday. Today is the 1Oth of the month. Thanks.

I receive my SS payment on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, which does not work out very well for me. I really need it earlier, when all my Bill’s are due. Is there any way I can change it?
Hi, Shirley. No, you cannot change it. It is based on the birthday of the person on whose record you receive benefits. For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks!

I have already set up my Social Security account. Is that all I had to do to start receiving my Social Security?
Hi, Judy. Thanks for your question. You can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age and want your benefits to start in the next three months. For helpful information on how retiring early or later can affect your benefits, please visit here. You can also use our Online Retirement Estimator to get estimates of your future retirement benefits. Also, if you are approaching age 65, even if you are not ready to retire, you still should sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday. When you are ready, you can complete the online application for Social Security retirement benefits in as little as 15 minutes. We hope this helps.
The way the SSA benefits are paid is atrocious. It should be a set date, not 2nd, 3rd Wednesday business. Sometimes it’s five weeks or longer between checks instead of four weeks. I should not have a monthly bill that has to be paid twice from the same check simply because of the way the SSA check is distributed. I am in better living conditions than a lot of recipients (no medical bills or prescription meds to buy). I still struggle unnecessarily because of the distribution dates. This needs to be changed and SSA recipients are not the ones who need to do the changing. It’s the distribution dates that need to change! You should get the check on the same date every month. This is just another way for the government to rip SSA recipients off. Instead of getting money every four weeks. From July to August 2019, it is five weeks between checks simply because of the way the dates fall. This happens several times in a year! Change it!
My husband supposed to get his first retirement payment on June 12,2019 because he was born April 5th, but when I check it on the 13th, it wasn’t there yet, we have minor kids who needs financial for their school, we live here in the Philippines, when we called ssa Manila, they said it will come early in June so we are kinda waiting so that we can use the money for school needs, thanks! I hope u can help!!

Your Medicare premiums are paid for by the state where you live.
What states pay Medicare premiums? I want to move there before I file for SSI!
Hi, Eileen. You may be eligible to receive assistance from the state where you live. Medicare enrollees who have limited income and resources may get help paying for their premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses through the Medicare Savings Programs (MSP). Please call the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at 1-800-633-4227 for more information. You can also visit here. We hope this information is helpful.
First, my SS does not arrive on the same DATE every month but whatever the date of the 3rd Wednesday is. This causes me to have from 1 to 3 NSFs every month. When I started drawing SS at 65, I received it on the 1st of the month. Then SSA went to Congress and got them to vary the payment to our current system because to many seniors were getting hit over their heads. Then about two years later, we were required to get direct deposit (which I already had), which eliminated altogether the robbery problem. Now, although I have changed my due date, they want a date certain, i.e., a certain date every month. My NSFs cost me $35 to $105 per month, but you don’t care because I have tried to change it to a date certain for several occasions. But I still lose up to 10% of my check every month.
wow… thats indeed something worth bookmarking, these dates are super important… Thanks for sharing.. 🙂

How about the repeal of the WEP. I am only receiving 1/3 of my EARNED benefit but if I get a job the Feds will withhold 100% of the premium from my check. I I believe the WEP is illegal because it is a breach of contract can I sue the SSA OR file a federal lawsuit for my full earned benefit ?
Why does it take so long( 4 mos . ) To receive an answer on my disability application. I hope to hear something soon. We are behind on all our bills.

I live in Spain, need to switch the Bank account to receive my Direct Deposit, How can I do it?
Francisco, thank you for your question. Please contact your local Federal Benefits Unit. You can find their contact information here. We hope this helps.
Thanks for the explanation, however, I don’t think it’s fair to have to wait five weeks between SS checks. I don’t get much and struggling quite a bit by the end of the fourth week. 😒
If my SS check is paid on on the 4th wednesday of the month does that represent payment for the month of August?
My son is under a doctor’s care and has been for the past 18 years. He did not receive his check this month or it was lost or stolen. How can he request a replacement check?
I am supposed to receive my check on the first Wed. of the month according to you. I never know when it is going to come in. It shoes up sometimes on the 8th and sometimes on the 12th. This is very frustrating. Hard to budget.
I get my SSD money on the 4th wednesday on every month sometimes on the third Wednesday, If i know i am getting the money the last Wednesday of the month can i ask to get it on the week before just for this one time if i have an emergency and need the money 7 days before ?
i have not received my benefits for the month of august
My wife and I get our benefits deposit at the same date.
Her birth day is June 16th and my is 26 Jul. Up until recently the benefits were deposited on the 4th week of the month. The last three months, the deposit was on the 3th week?. Am reworking my budget. when should we expect our deposit for this time on… thank you
Hi Frank. We are sorry for the confusion. To see your next payment date, create or log on to your personal my Social Security account and go to the “Benefits & Payments” section. We hope this helps.
My benefit payment date changes from last Wednesday of the month Tito the 3rd of the month without notice
Hi William. Thanks for your question. In May 1997, SSA started delivering Social Security on the 3rd of the month and on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month. The three new payment dates are assigned based on the beneficiary’s day of birth. Beneficiaries entitled to Social Security benefits prior to May 1997 continue to receive their benefits on the 3rd of each month. You may find it useful to see the scheduled days of payments here. We hope this helps.
I have not go my check yet should get it patricia lamar thank you
What day will my 09/03/2019 social security direct deposit be made? Does the Labor Day Holiday effect my normal 3rd of month deposit of social security benefits?
I was wondering the same exact thing. Does anyone else know?
Hi, rents are due for a lot of us on the 1st of the month as are other bills. I’ve never known SS to give checks on holidays. I think all benefits should be paid on the first regardless of birthdays. This is our money not the governments. IF that republican party takes OUR money we wil be lost. You have to fight for us. Out AGs are setting it in motionn but your agency has to help too.
My payment usually falls on 3rd of each month. Will I get paid earlier for the 9/3/19 payment since on weekend and holiday?
Calendar
I’m a little disappointed that social security did not pay us today August 30th, 2019. The first falls on a Sunday and the second is a holiday. I normally get paid on the 3rd but I also have another big problem, I live in Florida which is in the path of hurricane Dorrian and need my check to prepare for the storm. Supplies are getting low in the stores as many are out of water and as I live check to check I have no extra money to buy even a loaf of bread. I pray we will be fine.
My birthday is on the 31 of the month. As such, I have to wait almost two months before receiving money due to me. It’s all done electronically now, checks are no longer printed and mailed. I’m not sure I understand why everyone can’t receive their money at the same time.
Due to financial budgeting please change my automatic
Social Security Benefit deposit to an earlier date.
Thank you
Emily Kaye

is the check you receive monthly for the month it is received or is it for the month before meaning you will always be a month behind
is it the same for a regular social security check and a disability check that will change to regular social security when you become age ready
Hi Sandra. Benefits are paid the month after they are due. Let us explain. If you are eligible to receive your benefits beginning in the month of October, you will receive your first benefit payment in November. The exact payment date is determined by your date of birth. For future pay dates, you may find the schedule of Social Security benefit payment calendar useful. We hope this information helps.
Can we change dates to receive our checks or split them up? We get 3 checks mine my wife’s and our daughter gets one. I would like to split them so we get one mid month.
Hi, Michael. Thanks for your question. No, you cannot change it. It is based on the birthday of the person on whose record you receive benefits. For more information, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. They may be experiencing a delay in posting your payment. A: As explained above, The Social Security Administration cannot perform a medical “Continuing Disability Review” to determine whether you continue to have a disability while you are participating in the Ticket Program and progressing towards your employment goal. Every 12 months after you assign your Ticket to Work to an EN, we must decide if you are making the expected progress toward your vocational goal. We look at progress such as completing certain education or getting and keeping a job. We refer to this as a “Timely Progress Review”.
What happens the 3rd of months on Sunday
Hi Michelle. If your regularly scheduled payment date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a federal holiday, we pay benefits the business day before the due date. For future pay dates, you may find our Schedule of Social Security Payments useful. We hope this information helps.
there are like 4 months were I do not get paid till the 5th week . How come we don’t get one more check because that is a total of 30 days how are we not getting cheated? Thank you for your time on this I do appreciate it.
Sincerely,

Hi Vickie. The exact payment date is determined by your date of birth. Or, if you are receiving benefits under someone else’s earnings record, the payment date is determined by that person’s date of birth. The payments are schedule for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Wednesday of every month, even if the month has five (5) Wednesdays. For future pay dates, you may find the schedule of Social Security benefit payment calendar useful. We hope this information helps.
My husband normally receives his retirement SSI direct deposit on ghe 4th Monday, which did happen in October. Today, Nov 1st, I received a deposit. It appears to be 4 weeks early. I’m wondering if there’s been a change or if this is a one time occurrence. Thank you.
Hi Sheryl. Unfortunately, but for your husband’s security, we do not have access to his personal information in this venue. In your situation, it is best to contact your local Social Security office. I just started getting a child benefit for my step daughter. I am on SSD. It goes on a direct express card. What day does it drop to the card on? I get my SSD benefit on the 3rd of every month. My SSD direct deposits to my bank account. The child benefit has not gone on the direct express card yet……
Hi, Douglas. Your stepdaughter’s benefit should be paid on the same date as yours. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions for further instructions. We hope this helps.
I am a widow as of September 23 and my spouse received his benefits on the 3rd of every month and I receive mine on the 3rd Wednesday of the month will I receive his benefits on the day he received his or mine.
We are sorry to hear about your loss, Deidre. If you are receiving retirement benefits on your own record, you can only apply for benefits as a widower if the retirement benefit you receive is less than the benefits you would receive as a survivor. Visit our Benefits Planner: Survivors web page for more information. For additional specific questions, please call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
Does ssi payment date change when one goes back to work?
Is there any way my payment date can be changed to the 3rd of the month. It would certainly help us financially. If I need to talk to a representative, please call me.
I never knew that social security payment varies depending on the month you were born; for example, if you were born on the 20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the Wednesday fourth of the month. I’ve been wanting to get an SSS for my mother just in case she’ll retire from her job. Thank you for this; I guess it’s also smart if I’ll hire an SSS attorney, so we’ll have legal advice by the time that we decide to claim the money.https://www.sartainlaw.com/social-security
I received a social security deposit on 11/20/19 will I also get my next deposit which normally falls on the 3rd
My sister dead on the 25th of the month. Her birthday was on the 18th of the month. Why was her last deposit taken back and yet some people get paid that should not get benefits?

In the month of April 2020 I will be going to the Social Security office where I live to apply for my full social security benefit. I will be applying online. Will I need to have a birth certificate with me? My birthday is July 10,1954. I will be 66 years old. When will I receive my first check?
When will my sad check arrive? Today is Friday and a whole lot of weekend .
When do i get my direct deposit if it falls on a federal holiday, christmas for example
If a dependent child was added on the 20th if the month will they receive benefits for that month?
Just want to know how is not possible to open a social security Account if you’re living out of the United States. “It says you must have a US address”
