Update on Our Reentry Plans

We want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.
You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.
The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

My son has been trying to get an appointment for months so he can get his SSI benefits switched back to him, to no avail. Either he’s on hold for hours and hours or the one time he finally got a representative who made an appointment for him to speak with someone over the phone only for them to never call him. He desperately needs his monthly benefits back and he’s at a loss at what he needs to do.

You may experience service issues, including poor call quality, dropped calls, and long wait times. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and we appreciate your patience. We encourage your son to continue to work with his local office. He can also call our National 800 Number at 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter Wednesdays through Fridays or later in the day. We hope this helps.

I have read the comments that you have posted and the replies. At first I laughed because I have had the same experience with trying to contact SSA. Then I felt sad because the person answering the questions must not be able to read. She never answered a single question. “Ann” directed them to other sites. I am sure that they, like me, had already read all these sites and still needed to speak with a live employee of SSA. I too am unable to access ‘My Account’ and the only live person I talked to, said I needed to visit a local SSA office to have them re-set the account. But I too cannot seem to get an appointment to do this for the last 2 years! This is a perfect government program – it is there and employees are getting their paychecks – but we the public are not getting any help!

I have been trying to reach the Houston offices for the last week to see if we qualify for an in person appointment to apply for children’s SSN for children born out of country. total time on hold has been 6hours and still no answer…None of the articles apply to our situation – so we have to speak to the local office, but contact has been impossible! Should I just drive there?

Hi, Jay. We are sorry to hear that. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations. We are unable to accept walk-in visitors. I am a US citizen resident in the UK. It has been impossible to communicate with SSA since COVID started. Can’t access My Account to change contact info. Letters, FAXES and emails have been unanswered. The 1-800 help line has impossible waiting times and I fear actually does not work for overseas callers–the one time I connected with a human voice, the line was immediately dropped. Unfortunately, during the COVID period I have moved once and changed my phone once, and need to change my benefit payment method, which requires an uptodate residence address. All this is pending. And I have received no retirement benefits for the last 4 months. I am 86 and can’t wait indefinitely! Please can you get me in line for phone or email communication? Thanks.
