Update on Our Reentry Plans

Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

    The town I live in has a Social Security Office. I understand the need to close the offices for safety reasons. However, even though numbers are posted encouraging people to call, I’ve never gotten in touch with a representative from SSA. The phone rings, there is a recording with several messages then the music plays, and plays and plays. Nobody has answered while I’ve waited 45 minutes or longer. This is unsatisfactory. I’d like to hear a response why it takes so long to reach a representative on the toll free line.

      I waited 59 minutes today to speak to a representative and receive FALSE INFORMATION. I moved during a claim application and I was told my application was still processing, but they couldn’t tell me which county. I took it upon myself to call the county office in which I moved from to learn that my case had been CLOSED and my application was in fact NOT processing. I’ve left 20 voicemails for my personal rep. with no call back for 2 additional months. The man I spoke to today said SHE WILL BE CALLING TOMORROW. We shall see. Good luck to you and I hope in the mean time you are able to make ends meet with out your benefits. We haven’t been able to and have lost everything. Did I mention we have a 1yr old and a 3 year old? This is a Disgrace.

    I can not get through on the phone nor can I get in the local office as it is locked. I need a SS replacement card for my minor child so she can get her driver’s permit. Please help!

      Check with your state driver licensing authority and inquire what other type of documents may be used instead of the actual SS card. A W2 or a 1099 would be a good example.
      In my state (Wi) this is how it is done:
      When applying for a driver license or ID card you must provide your Social Security number (SSN). Your name and SSN provided will be verified with the Social Security Administration via the Social Security Online Verification (SSOLV). A driver license or ID card will only be issued if the SSN that you have provided can be verified using SSOLV.

    Very frustrated!!! Have tried to reach the local office to speak with someone for days. Need to verify that my fax sent in December was received by Mr. Stewart. I have still not received my Medicare card with the correct part B starting date. My husband who was and is on the same health benefits has received his card with all the correct info. I have been calling for days (and not on weekends or holidays!) to verify that the correct info has been received and that my card with the correct info has been mailed. I have not gotten past the recordings, and music. Too many hang ups and busy signals then silence. I have medical appointments that I have been delaying because of this. Please help and at least send me a direct line to Mr. Stewart who was to pick up my fax at fax number 281-584-0038. My mobile number is on the fax, so please someone call me to let me know this has been taken care of.

    Have to talk to someone about my application for Medicare Part B. Tried calling several times several days and on hold for 35 or more minutes than get disconnected. Very frustrating.

    I am new to receiving social security benefits and there are no state or federal taxes being withheld. I have tried to call and make an appointment several times to only to be left on hold for ever. I just want to make sure taxes are withheld so I don’t owe taxes.

      Hi, Pamela. Thanks for your question. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by printing, completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. The Form W-4V (to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security benefits) can be returned to your local Social Security office by mail.     I’ve tried for over a month to log in to SSA.GOV and Medicare with no success. Only a page that said “Bad Request” after I accepted Terms of Service. I called SSA and Julie said her computer shows I’d logged in several times this morning. I explained about the “Bad Request” page. She suggested I try a different browser and waited for me to try it. BINGO!!! It worked. Thanks Julie! Goodbye Xfinity!

We respond to questions and provide general information on our Retirement, Survivors, Disability, Medicare and SSI programs. If you have a general question, we encourage you to ask here.
