Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

Do we have to make an appt to get a social security replacement card. I am unable to do it online.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Melissa. First, realize that you may not need a replacement card. You will rarely need to show it. Knowing the Social Security number is what is important. To learn more about how to replace your Social Security card, visit our Social Security blog post, Replacement or Corrected Social Security Cards during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We hope this helps.

If you cant do it online then you would need to mail your documents in or try calling for an appointment. I believe it would have to be a dire need situation. People always complain about having to send thier ID’s but they can go get a certified copy which is acceptable as an ID but people just dont want to deal with going the extra mile then complain that SSA is at fault for denying thier applications.

I have been waiting since 2018 to get mine finalized. Im now waiting on a final decision hearing date. Good luck to all of you

The local office feels like they do not have to answer for mistakes they make. My son was approved 10 months ago and the original caseworker used date of hearing instead of judges ruling date of disability. Took 5 months to talk to someone to have them admit it would be too much work to fix it. So 10 months later he still has not received his back pay. And local office has not returned 1 of over 50 messages.

I can see that I am in a holding pattern right now on the website. The records side was closed on the 6th. I have called my local contact more than once and have received no response back about what is going on. I really need to get this finalized. I filed over a year ago. It looks like I have an SSI award coming, but I have a bunch of questions. I hate being treated like a mushroom

  6. Ernest A.

Good day. After reading most of the previous comments I am sure mine will go unanswered as does most of the rest. I did a telephone interview in Dec 2020 for my Son’s SS benefits. The application was completed and forwarded to the Baltimore office in Apr 2021. It is now Dec 2021 so the application is now one year old. I have been told the payment will be retro active to Jan 2021, which is fine. But the process has taken a year and is still not done. What is/was the normal processing time for this? It was for a minor child when I retired.

    • MIKE

Normally a Disability claim takes 4-6 Months. Some cases could go for a year such as this. If you ask for more time on your claim to submit evidence, for example, that can push it back another 3 months or so.

      • Sabrina S.

I filed in 2018 just received a decision in July.

      • Ernest A.

Mike, this is not a disability claim. Just a straight forward claim for my minor biological son now that I have retired. Should have been an easy one to complete.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Ernest. The length of time it takes for a decision can vary. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. You can ask to speak to a supervisor on your next call. We hope this is resolved soon.

      • Ernest A.

        Ann C.,
I have been patient with this process, just calling after 6 months and was told “not sure why is is just sitting there, sending a email to the supervisor” etc.. Was told Dec 2 it was being worked and now Jan 4, still unable to get thru to anyone for an update. After reading this blog I see I am one of millions I guess.

        • Vonda

Hi Ernest. We apologize for the delay and inconveniences you are experiencing. Unfortunately, but for security reasons, we do not have access to personal records in this blog. Please continue working with your local office. You can request to speak with the manager to see how we can help to expedite resolution of your situation. Look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.

      • Terry

This is a load of BS. You can barely get through. When you get your reps info- they don’t return calls. I was told my benefits would go through 12/08. Went through the holidays destitute. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Applied 10/28- No movement on my case!!!! Absolute HELL!!

  7. April D.

If I got a letter saying I was getting money on the 22, would’ve been today. How do I find out where that money is?

    • Anita

If you have direct deposit check your bank account going back a few weeks. This happened to me once and they had actually paid me three weeks earlier! 🙀

    • Ann C.

Hi, April. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks!

  8. Marguerite K.

My daughters check is 6 months past due she is still a high school student and that has been verified. Is this critical enough to merit an appointment as you have not managed to get her the money due her?

    • John

You might need to contact Social Security to see whats going on. Verify that the student form was correctly filled out and signed. If you waited after the record terminates to turn in the form, then it can take months to reinstate.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Marguerite. 9. Robert I.

Being I don’t receive any mail from Social Security I couldn’t help you with this particular question however I don’t have any reason to believe that it is not me delivered and received. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

  10. Robert

While SS employees are out of the office, is USPS mail being received? I visited the Fairfax, VA office to drop off a revised W-4V form. Not only was the office closed, but there was no indication that, if mail was posted to the address at Waples Mill Road, there would be someone to receive it.

    • Fellow A.

Although the bulk majority of Employee’s are working from home, there are still a select few that work in the office to receive and process USPS mail.

    • Mickey

Government offices are totaling incapable of helping anyone at anytime. Call your congressman.

      • Michael B.

Imagine calling on congress for a simple form that just needs to be mailed.
