Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

Like everyone else , you are placed on hold for hours . What happened to the call back ? It was so much better for both parties.
I sent a W-4V form to with hold federal income tax about 6 weeks ago to my local office per SSA web site . I have not received anything that it has been received and I see no change in my monthly amount that I receive. Any ideas of what to do . There has to be a better way

There is not really a good excuse for you all not to be working. Phones are not being answered. There is none at the office to answer questions, I mailed paperwork and for 2 months I haven’t hear anything.
You should be working by appointment if you want but work!!! take the proper measurements.
In Houston office you have already all the glass Windows and individual cubicles for each worker to be protected and efficient. I Do not understand why you cannot perform properly, nothing is done.

You can try calling 1-800-772-1213 where they have representatives available from 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. business days. But they are experiencing high call volumes and your call is important and will be answered by the next available service representative…

      • Dale P.

We understand the high call volumes … it is because there is ZERO IN-PERSON availability. Get the SSA workers in the offices and the call volume WILL decrease!

        • Mr P.

The call volumes are high because their rules are so complicated and you can’t find any answers on their website. You can’t even check the status of your case online. So everyone has to call in to get an answer.

Can you just imagine if FedEx or Amazon worked like this?

On hold forever trying to report my earnings! 3 times already! Do i even need to bother? Nothing has really changed in years?

I am trying to get in contact with someone

    • V.V.

Hi Latisha, thanks for using our blog. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213 where we have representatives available from 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. business days. You can also call your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information.

The 1-800 number doesn’t have the answer to my questions, they are instructing me to call my local office which is Columbia. MD Lakeside building and the phone has been ringing busy all week. Why aren’t they answering the phone??

      • Mr P.

I will never be able to get through using that phone number unless I wait on hold for at least 45 minutes and run the risk of having my call dropped after 44 minutes so I can restart the process over again. The local office is just as useless. I dread having to call because I know it will consume 4 hours of my time, frustrate and stress me out and I won’t accomplish what I originally wanted to do. The website is equally useless.

Don’t even bother responding to the comments with a robo-answer answer like that.

      • Bonnie C.

Except you never answeR the phone. If you do you cut people off intentionally or behave like animals. It’s taken me ten Calls today to connect to a semi human twice only to be told the server went down first time and refused help and told to wait longer while you charge me for Medicare I don’t want the second time. Your organization is a disgrace

Applied for spousal retirement benefits online in May 2021 for benefits beginning August 1, 2021. I have not received any Information about my claim, only an email in May saying it was received.
I’m international and unable to get through to the International Operations by telephone. Not sure what to do next. Refile? Is there a number to call or an address to write to check on the status? Thank you.

    • V.V.

Hi Lynne, thanks for using our blog. We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact the nearest Federal Benefit Unit in the area for any assistance related to Social Security programs and benefits. Also, our Office of International Operations home page provides more information to assist our customers living abroad.

What a mess! Call, get placed on hold wait 45 min. Someone I can barely hear or understand answers. We have a problem stating “overpayment” letter which I consider critical and a “in person appointment is necessary” NOPE, was told we all work from home. Was told to fill out a waiver, I have been getting monthly SSDI, got approval letters 2017,2018,2019,2020 and Now told I owe over $100,000 of over payments because I have not been eligible since 2015. WHAT???? THIS IS CRAZINESS. I have not even made over 600 a month. You will say call 1-800-772-1213. NO HELP If a person has current mental health issues……you certainly aren’t helping

    • V.V.

What are the secondary documents that you will accept for replacing a social security card? I am not comfortable with sending in the only copy of my son’s birth certificate or his driver’s license. He should not be driving without his license in order to get a replacement social security card.

    • V.V.

Hi Alyson, thanks for using our blog. Our Social Security and Coronavirus web page, under “Social Security Numbers and Cards” heading, provides details on the documents you need to mail in with your Social Security card application to get a replacement card, including a list of secondary documents. Contact your local Social Security office or your local Social Security Card Center to find out your submission options. We hope this helps!

I want to change the Direct deposit. I called many times. I sit on hold for 45 minutes (and I get that its busy) but the one time I get through the person BARELY awake tells me it is updated. I look 3 weeks later online it is not updated so I call again. finally get through after 33 minutes on hold. A women answers that I can barely hear because she again is barely awake. She takes my information puts me on hold.. Comes back.. I hear the line is open but does not respond to me . I sit there for 5 minutes YES 5 minutes and then she disconnects the call. I believe you are full of people who do not want to work. I am desperately trying to get my Son’s survivor benefits sent to the correct account how hard is that ? But I do not have access to that online
