Update on Our Reentry Plans

Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

    It is funny how the person from Social Security answers to the comments that are not even important or impeding but the people on here who have real issues can’t even get a response back. Social Security is a joke and to me are committing crimes by holding money from the people who are rightfully owed. Comment on that!!!!!!

    I need to change my name on my card. I got married this past October. Can I mail this in or do I qualify to make an appointment?

      Thank you for using our blog, Hilary. We temporarily expanded our policy to accept secondary identity documents. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to change your name. All submitted documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents.

      Contact your local Social Security office or your local Social Security Card Center to find out your submission options. We hope this helps!

    My daughter has not been able to get her benefits that she is entitled to through her father. He passed away, we have been not gotten our money since September and no one in the Social Security office really cares. They are very rude and will even disconnect the call because they do not want to deal with you. We sent in all necessary documentation in October and still do not have the money. Oh, and you can forget about talking to a supervisor there is none which explains why no one is doing their jobs. My daughter tried to get a appointment because this is causing a financial hardship in our home. Lights and water have been cut off due to the lack of communication at Social Security or the workers just not wanting to do their jobs. Oh and lastly, yes we did send all necessary documentation certified mail so they could not say they did not receive it. If anyone reading this have any suggestions on how to receive our money or know how to get a appointment please let me know. To the Social Security workers, you guys should be ashamed of yourselves and how you guys are treating the American people who actually paid into the system and pay your salary as well.

    I submitted an appeal for my new IRMAA online on Dec 2, 2021 and have heard nothing back. I divorced in Feb 2021 and am not working, 70 years old. How do I get someone to handle this appeal? Is there anyone working in SSA?

    I am trying to find information on reentry to the work field after a long disability. I was told at one time I could work and make as much money as I could for the first 9 months then I could/would be reevaluated for future work.

      Hi Julierae, thank you for your question. Social Security has special rules that make it possible for people with disabilities receiving Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to work and still receive monthly payments. These are called work incentives.

      For SSDI beneficiaries, there is a Trial Work Period (TWP) and then an Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). The TWP allows you to test your ability to work for at least 9 months. During this period, you will receive your full disability benefit regardless of how much you earn as long as your work activity is reported and you continue to have a disabling impairment. In 2022, any month in which earnings exceed $970 is considered a month of the 9-month trial work period.

      Once you’ve completed your TWP, you get a 36-month safety net called the EPE. During the EPE, you get benefits for all months your earnings or work activities are below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level as long as you continue to have a disabling impairment. Social Security will suspend cash benefits for months earnings are over SGA and start benefits again if earnings fall below the SGA level. In 2022, you are earning SGA if your earnings, after any allowable deductions, are more than $1,350 in a month.

        Don’t do it – if you work and collect SSD they will say you were overpaid SSD and then you will have to repay all the SSD payments you received while working. this happened to my son and he ended up owing over $30,000. This despite the fact that he was in the Ticket to Work program for less than the allotted time!

          You can filed a paper stating financial hardship and they will have to reduce the payment to only 10.00 a month.

    As we try to return our economy back to normal with the reopening of services it would be well to understand that the reopening of government is part of that process. Also the question should be asked that since state, county and local government offices have reopened why is the federal government unable or unwilling to do so?

      But no one comes online
      And They just put it on hold and plays the music
      It’s just a simple question
      That I did not recieve my social security card how to go about it

          How can we call when no one answers the phone, we get hung up on, rude service or the unwillingness of you guys to actually do your jobs. My issue has been going on since September 2021 and that is a shame.

    I am receiving survivors benefits. I received a letter stating my check would stop because I am working. I made over the limit for 2022.
    I need my employment to help make ends meet in this high economy.

    I have been calling the 800 number trying to get a form to report my earnings for year 2022. I contacted the local office to go in and talk to someone about my benefits and paying the money back,and was told no appointments are being made at this time.

    What is the form number or how would I get one?

        Thanks. I did call on Monday still waiting on a call back. Is there a form I can complete for the estimate of over payment. I don’t want to loose my payments.

    I am aggravated with this whole scenario! I work on a covid unit we are short staffed and I have very little time off. What little time off I have had was spent tracking down documents on multiple occasions to send to SSA to get a replacement SS card that was lost in a flood. 3 different times I have sent the paperwork so that I can obtain a replacement card for my son and 3 times I have received nothing back! Meanwhile he can’t touch his student loan/scholarship funds to buy his college supplies because he can’t provide a copy of his SS card!
    So let me get the straight, I can risk my life daily and have a vaccine forced upon me in order to continue risking my life to save the lives of others but you can’t manage to re-open field offices 2 years into this pandemic! There is something seriously wrong with this picture!!!
