Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.

By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.

I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Don’t be fooled.

Hi Luann, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

I called Liberty tax service to see if I had to do anything to get my stimulus check on my direct express card she said no. She also said if I didn’t receive the money in a couple of weeks to call back and she would help me remotely getting my nonfiler information in the system.

Go to irs.hov and follow the steps for get my stimulus payment. Most likely if you filed through Jackson Hewitt, h.r. block and other tax services you will get a paper check. You have to go to irs.gov and read the articles on the stimulus and check the dates when payments are being deposited/ mailed

Is this just SSI proper? I get social security disability which is technically not SSI I get social security disability which is not called SSI does this at this point apply to my situation I still have not gotten my check I do not file taxes and having for 6 years bye. I do get direct deposit so they do have my address and Bank info with the 1099 that I do receive every year. This was not written clearly

From what i understand people on ssd will receive the payment in late April. Ssd is different than ssi which is for people who either have a limited work history and so did not pay a significant amount of taxes or people who worked under the table and so paid no taxes. Also there are people who have children who receive ssi but whose parents work or live off their children

      • peter

Its the other way around ssi didnt work enough significant taxes for credit’s ssd did put enough in but cant work anymore from disabilities ssd turns into retirement when age is appropriate
