Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.

By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.

I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.

Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Don’t be fooled.

I’ve heard that adults that are disabled on social security that were claimed as a dependant will not recieve a stimulus check. I’m hoping this isn’t true because in my opinion, I need assistance just as much as anyone. Does anyone know? Email me. Mlmjjj23@gmail.com

Hi Doug, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

I am on social security and have direct deposit, when will I get my check, do I need to contact the social security agency..thanks,no kids.

    • V.V.

Hi James, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Treasury anticipates these payments to go out to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries starting around the end of April and to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients starting in early May. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

I have been raising my 3 grandkids for the last 3 years. I had temporary custody the whole time until I got full custody in September 2019. They receive survivor benefits and I receive disability. Their father has claimed them because he pays child support, but I signed them up for non filers. So will he or I get the money for them?

    • Jane S.

If he claimed them as dependents on 2019 tax returns, he will get the money, according to IRS website.

    • Lyn

If you have custody, YOU should be filing & claim them as YOUR dependents! He cannot claim them as dependents & cannot claim child support as an expense & you don’t claim child support as income! Don’t let him do that to you & the children. You need all the help you can get to raise them. You are on disability & raising them & he is claiming them?? So wrong!!

  5. Michelle

I’m on SSI and SSD I am married but don’t live with husband my husband did his taxes last year and claim me for independent do I get stimulance money

    • Lisa

No because I claimed my son that’s 35 and he doesn’t qualify

    • Terri

No ma’am. If you were claimed as a dependent you will not get the $1200 and your husband won’t get the $500 either. But if y’all filed as a Married couple y’all will receive $2400

    • V.V.

Hi Michelle, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

    • Colleen

You will receive your stimulus check on your direct express card when you receive your monthly ssdi payment usually on the 1st of every month. If thats when you get yours like the rest of us

    • Jamie

  8. Dee B.

If my child receives SSI, do I still need to file??

    • Knatara

That’s what I want to know I’m in the same boat with 2 other kids and nothing has yet been posted in my account nor direct Express card and I entered info on the website. Complete scam

    • Rhonda B.

If your child is under 17 and if your not required to file income tax or if you don’t usually file you need to use the nonfiliers tool on the IRS website to add yourself and your child. Now if your child is over 17 and haven’t been claimed as a dependent on someones tax return then your child will automatically recieve 1200 bucks and you wont have to file unless you yourself not on social security and dont have your bank acct info on file with the IRS. But if you filed taxes in 2018 and 2019 you don’t need to file.

    • V.V.

Hi Dee, thank you for your question. Check out the IRS Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here Tool Scenarios to see if you need to take any action. We hope this is helpful.

  9. Angel G.

    • Yvette

I’m in your situation. I get disability and do not file taxes and get direct deposit. Have you found out any information about our stimulus check. I have not yet received one

      • Marquita L.

See I need to Kno as well am on SSI and I have the direct Express card and I received my payments on the first of each month will my stimulatis check be on there to

    • V.V.

  10. Sherry

So for like me who don’t have children to add when should I receive mine I have my Direct Express card and I receive my monthly benefits on the 1st would I get it that same day?

    • Jane S.

If you receive SSI or VET benefits on your card, you will receive the stimulus money on that card.
SSI and VET will receive the stimulus money near end of April or early May, according to IRS website.

    • Laconza B.

      Early may

    • Colleen

You will get it on the 1st when you get your. Regular ssi payment

      • Tracy d.

Where did u get that info?

    • Humble L.

Those on SSI and Veterans benefits have til May 5th too add child(ren) dependents SO that means those of us who don’t have dependents have too wait as well. IRS/Treasury Department doesn’t have the. SSI information on who does or doesn’t have children.

So if IRS is stating deadline is May 5th I bet people on SSI won’t be seeing any direct deposits until at least May 12th. Do the math.
