Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: February 21, 2023
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don’t file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.
By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.
I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.
Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments. There is no fee required to receive these payments. Don’t be fooled.

I am 78 years old and receive SS retirement every month via direct deposit so, I know I’m already in the system. However, when the IRS direct deposited my stimulus check on April 29, 2020 they deposited it to the wrong account. Calling the IRS doesn’t help because all you can get are recordings. Trying the 800-829-0582 Ext. 652 still does not help. When I finally got through to a “live” person and explained why I was calling she transferred me back to the recordings. Please, is there any information Social Security can give me to help track where my stimulus payment went. I know SS sent the right information to the IRS. They made a mistake. Why won’t they at least acknowledge mistakes happen and help people whose payments were sent to the wrong account. I, like many other retired and elderly persons, really need that money. Thank you.

If the payment went to the wrong account, the bank was supposed to return it. Then the IRS will send a paper check to you at the address that they have in your SSA1099 form. It can take up to 20 weeks to issue these payments.

For people still having trouble with stimulus payment, hopefully this information will help. The 800 number they are quoting I’d simply an information line. To speak to an actual person, try 1-800-829-0582 ext. 652.
For those in other countries, the IRS will do direct payment info your card or a state side bank account. If you don’t have a state side account they will mail it to your address that is on your SSA 1099.
Stimulus payment are being scheduled, but they aren’t going to the lowest income first, apparently.
Those who claimed dependent but only received heir stimulus the IRS has claimed you must wait until 2021 to claim them on your 2020 taxes.
Payments will be scheduled through September, and you can check the get my payment daily. It will read not enough information,we are working on this UNTIL your payment has been scheduled.
Don’t give up.

I am 42 and married with 2 minor dependents (7 and 11) and on SSDI since August 2016. We have always filed taxes and even received the correct amount of money ($3,400.00) on April 15. The reason I’m writing is that today each child received $1,200.00 direct deposited into our checking account sent in their names. I called our tax preparer to find out why this second deposit came since we had already received the correct amount. He hadn’t heard of the issue happening and I could not find anything about this on the Internet. He said to contact Social Security since he said SSDI dependents must have been included with non-filers or something like that. Is this a known issue or has this happened to lots of people? We put the money into our savings so it would be there when we know what to do.
Thanks,
Kevin

Call 1-800-829-0582 ext. 652 I’m fairly certain they will have you return the funds to the IRS in the form of a check or money order.
