SSI Recipients: Act by May 5 to Get $500 Economic Impact Payment Now for Your Child
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: March 17, 2021
Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments. Many more will get theirs as the IRS continues to send payments. People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation and pension benefits will receive up to $1,200 automatically. However, some people in this group, those who did not file a tax return and who have a child under 17, must act by May 5th to receive a $500 payment for each qualifying child now. If you miss the deadline, you will receive your $1,200 payment, but you will need to wait until next year to file a tax return to get money for your qualifying child.
Deadline is May 5
You need to act by today to get it. If you receive SSI or VA benefits, did not file a tax return, and have qualifying children under age 17, you must provide each child’s information to the IRS using their Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here online tool by May 5.
A qualifying child is someone who:
- Is your child, stepchild, eligible foster child, sibling, half sibling, stepsibling or descendant, including your grandchild, niece or nephew.
- Can be claimed as a dependent on your tax return. For those who don’t usually file a tax return, include the child’s information in the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool by May 5.
- Was younger than 17 at the end of the 2019 tax year.
- Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.
- Has a valid Social Security number or an adoption taxpayer identification number.
Some people have older dependents. This may include your parent or a college student. Here are a couple things to know about dependents 17 or older:
- You won’t get money for those dependents.
- If they’re claimed as a dependent, they aren’t eligible for their own $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.
If you’re married, you must also provide additional information using the Non-Filer tool to claim the full $2,400 payment as long as your spouse didn’t receive Social Security (disability or SSI) benefits, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, or VA benefits in 2019. Also, your spouse did not have to file a tax return in the last two years. Payments of $1,200 are automatic for people who don’t normally file a tax return even if they receive:
- Social Security (Retirement, Survivors, Disability).
- Supplemental Security Income.
- Railroad Retirement benefits.
Important Message for Direct Express Card Holders: If you use the Non-Filer Tool to enter dependent information, you will not receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card. You will receive both your $1,200 payment and each child’s $500 payment on a non-Direct Express bank account you can provide, or by mail if you leave bank information empty, and only if the IRS has not already processed your $1,200 payment. If you do not use the Non-Filer Tool, you will receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card, and you will need to file a tax return next year to get a $500 payment per eligible child.

I checked the portal at IRS.Gov and gave my SS# , Dob & address – IRS scheduled me to receive my stimulus check on May 13, however I have constantly checked my Direct Express Card and the money have NOT been posted. I also called customer service and they checked my account and informed me that there is no deposit information on my card account.. So right now I am lost. No one to call…– Also on the IRS.Giv portal there is a strange Bank Account Number [that is only showing me the last 4 numbers of account number I’ve never seen before ].

Hi Mai, thank you for your question. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. To help you quickly and easily determine whether you need to take any action to receive your Economic Impact Payment, check out the step-by-step instructions on the Social Security and Coronavirus web page: https://www.ssa.gov/coronavirus/#anchorA. On that page, you will also find details about how the IRS will send economic impact payments to individuals that have a representative payee.

That information is still the same, don’t be fooled they have no idea when the eip payments will even be processed to those who have Representatives or payees. It’s so like our government to pay the poorest people last! Visiting the SSA.gov website is a joke!

Tried using the irs tool to check my status as a friend did so last week and was told they’d receive their stimulus the 13th. When I entered my info it said it’s not on file and my ss number is invalid, like how? How is it invalid when I receive ssi and the ssa was supposed to be handling the info given to the irs. How on Earth does that happen when it’s clearly valid and used for other government related things. That’s lovely so I’m assuming I will NOT be getting anything tomorrow or at all for that matter due to the ssa screwing up our info when giving it to the irs.

Ok!? According to the USA Today website, people who are eligible for automatic payments (SSA, SURVIVOR, SSDI, SSI, RRB, VA) the program’s payments will be spread out from April 6 through June. Some will receive paper checks; others will receive the money via direct deposit.
It should be received the same way you receive benefits. If it is sent back by the bank because an account has been closed or if there is no account information for you, you will be mailed a paper check to the last known address the IRS has on file for you.
Sure, that means waiting longer for some of us, but we have waited this long already. It also stated that if you have received stimulus payment and not received payment for your dependents, it is too late and you will need to file taxes in 2021 to receive the stimulus money for your dependents. Hope this helps people!

The SSA posted on May 6, 2020, “If you did not file a 2019 or 2018 tax return: The IRS plans to use information provided by SSA to help the IRS generate your EIP. In most cases, the IRS will send your EIP to your representative payee using the same method (direct deposit, Direct Express, or check) the representative payee receives your monthly benefit. The IRS has not determined when these EIPs will be processed.”
When will the SSA update beneficiaries with representative payees on when the IRS will be processing these EIPs? Why are we the last to get paid? Even the children get more respect than us.

my wife and I receive social security on a monthly bases and we recently received checks for $1200.00 each. We get my wife social security check earlier in the month, but so far we haven’t received. Since we received the $1200.00 checks will we be receiving our monthly checks this month?
