Treasury Check

Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments. Many more will get theirs as the IRS continues to send payments. People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation and pension benefits will receive up to $1,200 automatically. However, some people in this group, those who did not file a tax return and who have a child under 17, must act by May 5th to receive a $500 payment for each qualifying child now. If you miss the deadline, you will receive your $1,200 payment, but you will need to wait until next year to file a tax return to get money for your qualifying child.

Deadline is May 5

You need to act by today to get it. If you receive SSI or VA benefits, did not file a tax return, and have qualifying children under age 17, you must provide each child’s information to the IRS using their Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here online tool by May 5.

A qualifying child is someone who:

  • Is your child, stepchild, eligible foster child, sibling, half sibling, stepsibling or descendant, including your grandchild, niece or nephew.
  • Can be claimed as a dependent on your tax return. For those who don’t usually file a tax return, include the child’s information in the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool by May 5.
  • Was younger than 17 at the end of the 2019 tax year.
  • Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.
  • Has a valid Social Security number or an adoption taxpayer identification number.

Some people have older dependents. This may include your parent or a college student. Here are a couple things to know about dependents 17 or older:

  • You won’t get money for those dependents.
  • If they’re claimed as a dependent, they aren’t eligible for their own $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.

If you’re married, you must also provide additional information using the Non-Filer tool to claim the full $2,400 payment as long as your spouse didn’t receive Social Security (disability or SSI) benefits, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, or VA benefits in 2019. Also, your spouse did not have to file a tax return in the last two years. Payments of $1,200 are automatic for people who don’t normally file a tax return even if they receive:

  • Social Security (Retirement, Survivors, Disability).
  • Supplemental Security Income.
  • Railroad Retirement benefits.

Important Message for Direct Express Card Holders: If you use the Non-Filer Tool to enter dependent information, you will not receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card. You will receive both your $1,200 payment and each child’s $500 payment on a non-Direct Express bank account you can provide, or by mail if you leave bank information empty, and only if the IRS has not already processed your $1,200 payment. If you do not use the Non-Filer Tool, you will receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card, and you will need to file a tax return next year to get a $500 payment per eligible child.

This is my second note, and no one seems to care. I am really frustrated here. I receive a monthly social security check via direct deposit. According to both IRS and Social Security Administration, no action is required on my part and the stimulus would be deposited automatically in my direct deposit. To date, NO payment was sent to my bank. I know I am not alone in this. Why many were sent payment and others like me and my sister not? We are not required to file taxes and have not done it for years.
Is there anything I can do? Anyone out there in the same situation?

    • Tim

Yes I receive ssi and haven’t heard anything and I have no pending deposit

    • Ronnie C.

Yes, I am in the same boat as you and I haven’t seen nothing yet either…and I need ALL the help I can get..Now IRS.Gov has said we will get it on the 13yh, but I just checked and still ain’t get get it. Sooooo now I don’t know what to believe anymore.

Whomever is still waiting, don’t hold your breath. The Treasury has said it has issued most of the payments and is almost out of stimulus money.

Hi Okil, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

    • Vonda V.

Hi Amanda, thank you for your question. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. To help you quickly and easily determine whether you need to take any action to receive your Economic Impact Payment, or a payment for your qualifying child, check out the step-by-step instructions on the Social Security and Coronavirus web page.

I’m in a VERY bad situation, I don’t know where to turn, as the IRS is closed. I’m a 51 yr old woman, I’ve been on SSDI for the last 14yrs. My yearly income is $8,242.00 per year, & I have no dependents, nor can I be claimed as a dependent. I live alone, at the same address for them last 12 yrs. I’ve not received my $1200 stimulus check, which I should not have to take any action to receive, but I don’t file taxes due to the income status. I entered my information on the portal provided by the IRS.gov website, but now, when I try to use the tool ” Track My Payment “, I receive a message saying that the S.S. number I entered does NOT match the S.S. number on file, & am kicked out of the process!!! This can only mean that SOMEONE ELSE IS USING MY INFORMATION, BUT WITH A DIFFERENT S.S. NUMBER!!! I’m trying to survive on $783 a month, so that check was A NECESSITY FOR ME!!!! I desperately need help, & contacted my Congressman, who said that I’m probably going to be getting a check via postal service, but now, with the S.S. Number being wrong, I won’t be getting ANY CHECK AT ALL!!! You are the Dept that’s supposed to be working with the IRS to give them the information about my status, ;my Direct , etc., So, can you PLEASE HELP ME EXPEDITE THIS PROCESS??? I’M BEGGING YOU!!!

    • Vonda V.

Hi Gwen, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payment by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your SSI benefit. Check out the step-by-step instructions and schedule of payments on the Social Security and Coronavirus web page. We hope this helps.

      • CONCERNED

Shes not on ssi lol do you even read these post my god.

        • Vonda V.

Hi Concerned, thanks for using our blog. The monthly maximum Federal amount for Supplemental Security Income in 2020 is $783 for an eligible individual. Often times individuals are unsure about what disability benefit they are receiving because Social Security administers both Social Security disability and Supplemental Security Income so the benefit amount can be an indicator. Hope this helps!

  10. Tctp

I recieve social security survivor benefits and still have not recieved my stimulous payment. I have no other income and I’m not required to file taxes. The social security administration has obviously done something wrong.

      • Peter
