Millions of Americans have already received their Economic Impact Payments. Many more will get theirs as the IRS continues to send payments. People who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation and pension benefits will receive up to $1,200 automatically. However, some people in this group, those who did not file a tax return and who have a child under 17, must act by May 5th to receive a $500 payment for each qualifying child now. If you miss the deadline, you will receive your $1,200 payment, but you will need to wait until next year to file a tax return to get money for your qualifying child.

Deadline is May 5

You need to act by today to get it. If you receive SSI or VA benefits, did not file a tax return, and have qualifying children under age 17, you must provide each child’s information to the IRS using their Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here online tool by May 5.

A qualifying child is someone who:

  • Is your child, stepchild, eligible foster child, sibling, half sibling, stepsibling or descendant, including your grandchild, niece or nephew.
  • Can be claimed as a dependent on your tax return. For those who don’t usually file a tax return, include the child’s information in the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool by May 5.
  • Was younger than 17 at the end of the 2019 tax year.
  • Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien.
  • Has a valid Social Security number or an adoption taxpayer identification number.

Some people have older dependents. This may include your parent or a college student. Here are a couple things to know about dependents 17 or older:

  • You won’t get money for those dependents.
  • If they’re claimed as a dependent, they aren’t eligible for their own $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.

If you’re married, you must also provide additional information using the Non-Filer tool to claim the full $2,400 payment as long as your spouse didn’t receive Social Security (disability or SSI) benefits, Railroad Retirement Board benefits, or VA benefits in 2019. Also, your spouse did not have to file a tax return in the last two years. Payments of $1,200 are automatic for people who don’t normally file a tax return even if they receive:

  • Social Security (Retirement, Survivors, Disability).
  • Supplemental Security Income.
  • Railroad Retirement benefits.

Important Message for Direct Express Card Holders: If you use the Non-Filer Tool to enter dependent information, you will not receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card. You will receive both your $1,200 payment and each child’s $500 payment on a non-Direct Express bank account you can provide, or by mail if you leave bank information empty, and only if the IRS has not already processed your $1,200 payment. If you do not use the Non-Filer Tool, you will receive your automatic $1,200 payment on your Direct Express card, and you will need to file a tax return next year to get a $500 payment per eligible child.

My child turned 18 before the end of 2019 but he is still in school. Why aren’t these children getting a $500.00 check too. They are in school and still a dependent. Can someone explain that to me. My son will be in school until the end of this school year. Still a child in school. Who is getting the checks for all those 17 year olds? Just don’t seem right when they still in school.

My kids get child auxiliary credits through my ssdi. I used the non-filter tool early enough And claimed my kids as dependents like normal as I would if I filed taxes. I only got $1200. I did not get any of the $500 per child for either child. I don’t know if it’s because technically they have their own income source. But I got nothing for them. They are both under 11 years old. It’s a shame. There is no customer service open at the IRS. And SSI won’t answer stimulus payment questions. Fell through the cracks with no support or remedy.

my adult son lived with my Husband and myself for 2018 2019 to care for us-,my Husband died 11/16/2019 and due to losing all income except SS I claimed my son for 2019. Can I pay back the $500.00 I received and restore his right to receive the 1200 check?

I did get my stimulus payment of the 1200.00 on April 29th. I get ssi and SS and I have a depend and I don’t file any taxes. I did go in to the IRS and fill out the non tax form so I could get my daughter money. I filled it out on April 11th I can still go to the IRS website and follow the instructions to get me back to the text form I filled out. I can still see all my info that I put in to file. When I go to check it the page says the I don’t have to do anymore and I would get a letter. ** My question is when will I see my daughter 500.00 and will it come paper check or in my checking account. I’m a single mom and my daughter has autism and we are struggling real bad just like others. I can’t call anyone or send a email. Is there away you can leave me some kind of message. Thank you & Stay safe

I’m SSDI AND SURVIVOR BENEFITS, I file my taxes every year I don’t understand why my Stimulus payment was mailed instead of being direct deposited into my bank account on file with SSA? I have fallen behind in my bills and haven’t been able to buy groceries for myself in 3wks. I down to eating crackers and water I saw my doctor on Thursday April 30th, 2020,. I’m threatening a heart attack and a stroke if I don’t stop worrying about my bills and eating correctly, I was very sick in February when in to see my doctor had a bad case of the flu and pneumonia I’m still not completely recovered from that but I know that I’m Covered in the blood of Jesus Christ.
    Amen Amen ??????
