SSA Talks: Benefits for Children (SSI and Survivors)
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: October 1, 2024
Kathleen Romig, Senior Advisor in the Office of the Commissioner, joined the latest episode of SSA Talks to discuss the types of benefits Social Security offers to children. As a prior advocate and mother of a child with disabilities, Kathleen recognizes the challenges that children and families encounter. Her awareness of these challenges – and her engagement with others in the advocate community – enable Kathleen to identify ways that Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) help children.
In this episode, Kathleen discusses benefits for children — disability, SSI, and survivors. This also includes eligibility for adults who have a disability that began before age 22.
Kathleen also explains how SSA is taking more proactive steps to reach eligible children, including the new Survivor benefits webpage, and collaborations with states and communities.
The episode is accompanied by a transcript and links to related materials.

Will there be changes to the age limit of a child who receives survivor benefits after the loss of a parent. My husband passed away from cancer at the age of 41. Our children were 15 and 11 at the time. Now, my oldest is in college and her survivors benefits would help her greatly. She has applied for numerous grants/scholarships but she has not received any. I’ve researched and found that prior to Regan, children received survivors benefits while in college, up to age 26. Will this ever happen again? Is there a way for me to contact a politician to discuss?

My son was deemed disabled and collected SSI until my income from work took me over the limit to receive any more payments. His father passed away and he now received survivor benefits. I no longer have that kind of income. Do I need to notify social security about my income for his SSI?
