Social Security Welcomes its New Commissioner

" "Andrew M. Saul was sworn in today as the Commissioner of Social Security at the agency’s office in Washington, D.C. He will serve a six-year term that expires on January 19, 2025.

Commissioner Saul expressed his gratitude at being chosen to serve as the Commissioner of Social Security. “The Social Security programs touch the lives of almost every American – serving in this position is a tremendous privilege and an awesome responsibility,” said Commissioner Saul. “I am humbled by the opportunity to help the agency to deliver critical services to the American people.”

Commissioner Saul brings a vast amount of experience to the position. At the federal level, one of Commissioner Saul’s greatest achievements was his work with the Federal Thrift Investment Board (FTIB). In 2002, Commissioner Saul became Chairman of the FTIB, which administers the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). The TSP provides military and federal employees the opportunity to save for additional retirement security. Commissioner Saul led the board to modernize systems and restructure executive staff.  Through effective changes, he increased participation and reduced participant costs.

In addition to his federal service, Commissioner Saul has served and worked within numerous state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and private sector businesses. He started his career in the private sector, growing and managing two large publicly traded apparel chains for over 20 years. He served as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York’s regional transportation system and the country’s largest public transportation network. He also served as Vice Chairman of the Mount Sinai Health System and Chairman of its Audit and Compliance Committee. In addition, he was a Trustee and Chairman of the Audit Committee of the National Gallery of Art. He formerly served as a board member of the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York.

Commissioner Saul will be responsible for administering the Social Security retirement, disability and survivors insurance programs that pay over one trillion dollars annually in benefits to approximately 64 million beneficiaries, as well as the Supplemental Security Income program that provides cash assistance to more than 8 million people with limited income and resources. The agency has a national workforce of about 63,000 employees and 1,500 facilities across the country and around the world.

Commissioner Saul is from New York. He is a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, and serves on its Board of Overseers. He and his wife of over 50 years, Denise, have two adult children and three grandchildren.

  1. Preserve Social Security against Republican forces trying to destroy it. I ,as with many Americans , am dependent on this income to survive. Unlike Republicans in the government I am not wealthy and need this source of income that I have paid into for over forty years. Wealthy Republicans are too self-serving to bother with the needs of the average hard working citizens. They think everyone is as wealthy and self-sufficient as they are. Unfortunately we are not and need these programs to survive.

  2. Got and idea??? How about take a few dollars way from the million air’s and give it to the people who only make lees than $1000 per month to bring them up to the $1000 per months per month???????? That way they won’t be hurt much and the millions making less than $1000 per month will get enough money to live on when you raise there retirements up to $1000. I only get $801 per month I can’t believe the other $200 coming form million air’s would hurt them????????? It would sure help me?????? I could even be able to pay a couple of bills per month???
    Any way just another idea???
    Thank you Ronald.

    • Social security was never meant to be all you get for retirement. At best it will be 40% of what you need. Everyone is responsible for saving money during their working years for their retirement. If you make the choice not to do that then please don’t expect others to give you money to make up for your lack of being responsible for your own life when you retired. Maybe you need to get a part time job to earn some extra money.

        • You need to wake up. I am no different than most. When my income just barely made it for me i did not buy booze, drugs, go out to restaurants, had a car that was a junker, no fancy clothes, did not go out and party, etc. But I still put aside money even if it was only $25 a month. I worked hard, proved myself to the companies I worked for and was able to get ahead a little bit at a time, while working two jobs at a time. Yes I worked for minimum wages when it was a lot less than it is now. I always looked for new jobs that I could advance myself and my income. I did not go to college but did get a GED.
Every person has to decide what is important to them and live with their decisions and not expect others to give them handouts. There are government financial aid programs that are there to help all individuals.

  3. Proposed Message of the Public Trustee http://www.title24uscode.org/2020message.pdf

The tax-loopholes, poverty traps, in-kind-support mechanisms (ISMs), home invasions, slash piles, budget cuts and accounting errors, disabling achievement of a profitable shoestring budget, federal budget surplus and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, must be abolished. Congress must authorize federal government officials 2.5% annual payroll growth, and finally exact the full 12.4% Old Age Survivor Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trust Funds payroll tax on the rich and state employees, on all their income. Adjustment of the contribution and benefit base in Sec. 230 of the Social Security Act under 42USC§430 is repealed and replaced with a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Trust Fund’, ‘To create in the Treasury a Federal SSI Trust Fund to end child poverty by 2020 and all poverty by 2030.’ For the record, Congress must also retroactively amend the effective DI tax rate to 2.1% (2018) in Sec. 201(b)(1)(T) of the Social Security Act under 42USC§401(b)(1)(T). To fulfill the SSI Trust Fund’s mission of ending poverty the Commissioner of Social Security must interpret the Cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in Sec. 215(i) of the Social Security Act under 42USC§415(i) right, to provide low-income beneficiaries with an automatic 3% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), while inflation continues to run between 2.5%-3% as it has since 1980. Even if the maximum benefit is not immediately sufficient to raise family income above the poverty line, benefits would not be subjected to attrition and theoretically beneficiaries would not be poor in the future. To sustain this automated, systematic, nationwide process to end poverty in the United States, Congress must amend the $7.25 an hour federal minimum wage since the Great Recession to $7.50 in 2019, $7.75 in 2020, $8.00 in 2021 and 3% more every year thereafter.’ in one final sentence at 29USC§206(a)(1)(D). The Unemployment Compensation (UC) program must abolish travel restrictions and ratify three International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions to insure contributor sick days, family vacations, childbirth and childcare, with three weeks annual Holidays with Pay Convention (Convention 132) of 1970, for new fathers and Workers with Family Responsibilities (Convention 156) of 1981, as extended without pay under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 Pub.L. 103–3 and most of all fourteen weeks Maternity Protection (Convention 183) of 2000.

PS After the solstice I will be hiking in the mountains until after my 45th birthday on August 11. Just pay $2,000 a month to sign the 2019 Annual Report that contains my Message of the Public Trustee: Anthony J. Sanders, Hospitals & Asylums, title24uscode.org .

PPS Alternatively, my father’s attorney has filed for a child benefit 50-80% of my father’s mandatory maximum benefit at 70. The whole purpose of my career, at my age of lowest incidence of disability 40-44, turns out to be to tax the rich to end child poverty by 2020.

    • I was given a raise then they deducted $200.00. how is that a raise! I’ve got a great idea, how about we charge the government interest on our money they are holding!

Someone at the Social Security Administration, 1 Jamaica Center Plaza, Jamaica, New, York 11432 has been stealing from my Social Security Payments for over 5 years in the amount of $439.50 a month [“and now $464.50”] [and as of Jan 3, 2019, $500.50] and has stolen $24,979.50 as of this date.[06/17/19] and nobody wants to do anything about it. Why?
Social Security Administration has no order from a Court for seizing any of my Payments, this act is criminal by its nature, and those performing this act are performing unlawful actions! They are in violation of the Law and my unalienable Rights.
No civil action has been filed against me and no Judicial Warrant has been put against any of my property or my payments. Someone at the Social Security Administration is just plain “stealing” from my payments and is causing me great damage. Please stop this theft from my payments and return my $24,979.50 that has been stolen from me so I can pay my bills and get needed medication. .

  5. Glad to have you aboard. Hope you are better than the last person and can address the following:
    1. Will those in power screw around with our social security that we have paid into?
    2. Revision of antiquated rules regarding OUR money and how it is distributed. Ex. It’s stupid that I have to be held at the amount of money I drew at age 62 forever. The amount should rise to the full amount I am due once I reach age 65. Also more needs to be done to inform retirees of this rule when you contact social security by any means!!
    3. Transparency and full disclosure is needed regarding the information received daily about proposed changes of social security benefits by our current corrupt administration that has labeled the paid into benefit as a “handout” .
    4. Why are we short changed and not paid for all our employment history instead of flipping quarters? Any shortage is not our problem. We gave no permission for funds we paid every pay period to be used by Congress as their own personal ATM!!!

  6. A simple request, Purge the system, how many decease people are still collecting checks, How many people that are claiming disability with their checks going to a payee get the idea.

  7. Please pay my beneficiaries of ssa income online by deposit direct transfer to my account bangkok bank in new york brand service for me in Thailand claim, and used IAT system for exchange to be thai bath in my account holding ,now for my authority beneficiaries of retirement plan.gov

  8. I am supposed to live on $750 SS + SSI per month. $124 food stamps. I am starving and cannot pay my bills. HELP!

  9. You forgot to mention that Andrew Saul has no qualifications except for serving on the board of a right-wing think tank that wants to destroy Social Security.

. Like everyone appointed by grifterTrump, this agency head despises the agency he has now been appointed to manage.

because the bottom-linehe goal of the wingnnuts is to destroy the social safety net, and the earned benefits we’ve paid into all our working lives.

But we get that you all aren’t allowed to actually tell the truth about your new boss. Fortunately, some of us do our homework.

  10. Congratulations to a professional with vast and relevant experiences in diverse fields of management that only augurs well for the future of Social Security and the benefits provided for all American workers

  14. Please ask El Cajon, San Diego office to post our Presidents photo on the wall. It has been missing or never put up. Obama’s photo was up the first two weeks of his presidency.
    Not cool

  15. Welcome Commissioner Saul. I pray for your success in managing and growing this critical
