Social Security Increases Transparency and Accountability – Shares More Information Online
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: March 26, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced today several new initiatives and resources to promote greater transparency and accountability.
“President Trump has been clear that good government must serve the People. This begins with being transparent in how its government makes decisions and operates as good stewards of the resources entrusted to it,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security.
“With this guiding principle in mind, Social Security is taking several important steps to increase transparency and accountability in order to help others understand our agency’s work and the complexities we navigate.”
What to Know about Proving Your Identity: SSA recently announced it is strengthening identity proofing requirements for people who do not use a personal my Social Security account to apply for cash benefits or to change direct deposit information for benefits. To help the public understand the new policy, SSA today published a new webpage, What to Know about Proving Your Identity | SSA.
Weekly Operational Report Meetings: Acting Commissioner Dudek meets with his senior leadership team throughout the week to tackle a range of challenges facing the agency. During the Weekly Operational Report (WOR) meeting, leaders focus on specific topics, the options presented to the acting commissioner, and the resulting decisions made during these meetings. Beginning March 14, 2025, each WOR is recorded and published to SSA’s YouTube channel. The WOR Playlist is available here: SSA Weekly Operational Report Meetings
Agency Actions: Acting Commissioner Dudek also published online a summary of select agency challenges, options presented, and the Acting Commissioner’s ultimate decisions. SSA plans to update this page periodically to include notable matters the current Administration is solving. Agency Actions | SSA
National 800 Number Wait Times: The American people do not receive the prompt customer service they deserve when calling the agency’s 800 number. Despite the knowledge, dedication, and experience of SSA’s telephone representatives, customers wait too long to speak with a representative. People deserve to know the wait time challenges they will face if unable to use the agency’s secure and convenient online services. Acting Commissioner Dudek is increasing the level of detail shared with the public to provide an honest and transparent view of wait times. Efficiencies and Cost Avoidance: SSA works closely with the General Services Administration to identify unused and underutilized office space. SSA published its Efficiencies and Cost Avoidance webpage that lists soft-term lease terminations, including an explanation for each location and whether any change affects the public or not. For nearly all locations, the space being terminated is only a small room within the larger Social Security office location.
Workforce Update: SSA identified opportunities to optimize its workforce by offering voluntary opportunities to depart the agency or move to a frontline customer service position. The Workforce Update | News | SSA webpage briefly explains each voluntary option and how many employees accepted that option.

Why would I trust SSA to be more transparent when Elon Musk has been tearing the system apart? Employees have been terminated, offices have been shuttered and the phone banks are not monitored. I think this is more lies of the current administration.

I requested a new ss card months ago and still have not received it.

Hi, Nancy. Thanks for reading our blog and for your question. You can contact your local Social Security card office or card center to speak with a representative about the issue with your replacement Social Security card. We hope this helps.

I appreciate being able to view the weekly meetings. Thank you

I have not doubt that the current administration does not give a hang about welfare of the lower 98%. It’s obvious. Just saying.

It would be nice if I could see all the background info the 888 line reps see pertaining to my acct that isn’t transparent on my Ssa online acct.
OR
If the info in the letters sent to me via US Mail reconciled w/ info online and/or info provided at a local office or 888 phone rep. My head spins with misguided info that all contradicts the other!?
Or why when I request all letters be sent via e-mail . Receive certain letters snail mail and others email.
Now I’m a Gen X and could only imagine my elders who have yet to become tech savvy or give up out of frustration when trying! I know I want to throw my tablet across the room after dealing w/SSA.
Best advice is to document, doc,doc all interactions, msgs, etc w/SSA. I kept a journal and it was a saving grace. Especially w/my condition and meds that have me forgetting key words and content of my conversations

Is it true we all need to go to our local office to verify our identity beginning in April?

This nothing but restating it’s operational method, which has been in effect for decades.
Also, listing the known problems that has been a trouble also for at the 15 years ever sense they have had a hiring freeze; leaving them short handed, and making even more of a problem as people leave for better opportunities and retirement.

I went to the SSA website to check to see if my local SSA office was still open. It took me four attempts after entering the correct zip code to see the location information. A dialog box kept popping up with an error message, nonsensical to me. I have never encountered errors with the SSA website prior to this.

I tried to use my Social Security account but I have a new email address and was told I would get something via the mail so I can use the account. I have received nothing in this regard. I am unable to drive right now so how do I resolve this issue. My new email is below

I would like to comment on a situation just recently while waiting for someone to answer my call, here’s the thing, I always trusted that SSA would be sincere, since I never had any problems with the social security admin. in the past which is actually 35 years ago, but when their automation answered and stated a time -frame to
answer my call, but never did, I waited three
long hours, but never got a response or even a call return as they promised, as of this day I’m still anticipating the return call, and yes, there should be administrative protocol to evaluate this issue, as it’s ongoing, and I’m really appalled at what’s happening
