older adults standing and talkingMore than 71 million Americans will see a 3.2% increase in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2024. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by more than $50 per month starting in January.

Federal benefit rates increase when the cost-of-living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W). The CPI-W rises when inflation increases, leading to a higher cost-of-living. This change means prices for goods and services, on average, are higher. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) helps to offset these costs.

We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. But if you want to know your new benefit amount sooner, you can securely obtain your Social Security COLA notice online using the Message Center in your personal account. You can access this information in early December, prior to receiving the mailed notice. Benefit amounts will not be available before December. Since you will receive the COLA notice online or in the mail, you don’t need to contact us to get your new benefit amount.

If you prefer to access your COLA notice online and not receive the mailed notice, you can log in to your personal my Social Security account to opt out by changing your preferences in the Message Center. You can update your preferences to opt out of the mailed COLA notice, and any other notices that are available online. Did you know you can receive a text or email alert when there is a new message waiting for you? That way, you always know when we have something important for you – like your COLA notice. If you don’t have an account yet, you must create one by November 14, 2023, to receive the 2024 COLA notice online.

“Social Security and SSI benefits will increase in 2024, and this will help millions of people keep up with expenses,” said Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security.

January 2024 marks when other changes will happen based on the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax in 2024 will be higher. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will also change in 2024.

Be among the first to know! Sign up for or log in to your personal my Social Security account today. Choose email or text under “Message Center Preferences” to receive courtesy notifications.

well people stop voting for the same corrupt know it all fools that you voted for last time start going and asking these lying corrupt people way they say one think and do another cause they know you all will vote for them cause you like their tie or dress wake up AMERICA and change this they never will

    • Richard H.

      You’re very articulate David.

      • Ken M.

Passionate. Your sarcasm is uncalled for.

    • Stan B.

The fixed income people, can’t even get raise that the economy has risen over the period of this year. We senior have a choice of medicine or food, both has increased 17% & they give 3.2% raise. That don’t cover the increase in gas little lone the other bill increases & price food is higher then increase in gasoline. They give us a 3.2% rise & the other 14 companies increase there rates 3.2%. That make 14×3.2% broker.. The give our money & don’t help the ones that paid 30 some years, to live below poverty. Within 100 dollars so they keep out property but hand our taxpayers money over to foreign governments by the 100,000 billions, while we are almost starving us Vietnam we Veteran’s plus worked 30+ more years, expect us to suffer. SO SAD🇺🇸

  2. MarkoX

This is horrific. 3.2% increase? All Social Security should be raised by 30% immediately. If $billions can be printed for everything else then Citizens at least should get back more of the taxes they actually paid in for their whole lives. What a shame.

    • SandraM

30%??? That’s ridiculously high. I am 57, work full-time, and received a 67 CENT an hour raise last year. Many on SS have actually contributed far less to the system than what they will receive while on SS.

      • Richard H.

        3.2%, Sandra. Read carefully.

        • Ken M.

          Again? Thanks Karen

      • Jean P.

Your 67cents a hour for full time work is almost 14 hundred a year.
Average raise of $50 for retiree is $600.
You have nothing to complain about.

    • Brenda

If you think 3.2 is bad listen to this. Social Security takes 2/3 (two-thirds) of my total social security check because I worked 2 jobs in Louisiana, one for the state (10 years) and about 24 years under social security. So they say I make too much money. Now Congress is trying to give themselves a raise of about 30,000 a year but I make too much money. Congress also gets a per diem check for every day. Extra money to spend on those long lunches and such. Read WEP and GPO for more information.

      • GLENN A.

We have to suffer so illegals can come to this country get free everything and work off the books. Then they send the money back to the home land, all skirting the tax system. I worked in construction my whole life and have seen plenty!

    • Beatrice

I agree, Congress builds in an automatic huge increase every year. What work and how many days to they actually work.? Better yet, what do they accomplish besides acting like school age kids? And they receive the best health care and increases. It’s past time something is done to stop these people from padding their pockets and put the $$ back into the hands of the people that have actually done the hard work.

Billions of dollars to support various war conflicts around the globe, and a US disgrace to support those who help build this Nation with just $50 dollars per month increase in 2024 – our own Government creating HOMELESS FAMILIES. Let’s have our politicians in WA DC have the same rise/increase of 3% in their paycheck and see if they like it – how come all of them ended up Millionaires – AN AMERICAN DISGRACE – after working all our lives building America,….

    • carmella R.

      agree

    • Anne

You hit the nail on the head. After the part B increase, what’s left of the increase isn’t even a full tank of gas. It’s a cruel joke.

    • Esther S.

that is right Mario is no fair

    • Unique J.

We have 99 problems and our Government is 1.

  5. Daphne S.

Does Social Security honor court order child support from noncustodial parent social security payments?

    • A.C.

Hi, Daphne. Thanks for your question. There are a number of circumstances when the Federal government can garnish Social Security benefits. To learn more about when Social Security will garnish benefits, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

  6. Silvia T.

If i apply for social security after November do I get the cola increased?

  7. Greta P.

The Gov’t. gives w/one hand, but takes w/the other. This piteously low raise is of no consequence when inflation is so high!

  8. BELLA

The government needs to switch there Raise with ours. Let’s see how long they can make it eating crumbs .

    • okey

    • Anne

William, they could care less. They act like we’re taking money out of their personal accounts. Drag their heels, deny claims all in hopes that we give up or die. The entire system needs a massive overhaul. They are deliberately forcing people into desperation, destitution, and homelessness. Not to mention the mental health issues that arise from being treated less than human. Animals are treated better than we are.

    • Glenn

Call your local congressman or senator to get help.

    • Betty B.

I hired an attorney after being denied twice for disability. I have bladder cancer and systolic and diastolic heart failure. I worked since I was 16 years old. I am 61 now and I became homeless last year due to being unable to work and go to drs and recover from surgeries and get follow up surgeries. I suggest you hire an attorney. I am finally getting my hearing to recieve disability benefits 3 years after I initially filed. With the nonsense going on in the increased costs of housing and food, along with refusal to provide disability to truly disabled people, we end up living in the streets and getting looked down at for having no choices. A single apartment costs 1500 dollars a month. Forget groceries. Forget transportation. What is anyone supposed to do. It’s a shameful thing the government has orchestrated. RENT CONTROL is a thing. It worked for years. What happened to it? Why won’t they control this? Yet they all keep getting raises and living the life of Ryan. We all sheepishly allow it to continue. Stop shutting up and start standing up to them. We HAVE TO GET OFF OUR BUTTS AND FIGHT THEM FOLKS AND QUIT RE-ELECTING anyone! Give em one term and if they don’t change the course fire them. PERIOD
They could but we don’t make them so they just keep at it.

      • Betty B.

Please explain to me WHY a person who is forced to appeal a disability decision is also forced to pay attorney fees when they win? Isn’t the looser supposed to pay fees for unnecessary lawsuits caused?
SSA should be responsible for ALL attorney fees charged. The claimant WINS the case…The Looser should be paying! NOT THE WINNER!
More ways to steal and nobody says shit.
NSS! My new t-shirt I am having made
        UGH!

    • David V.

Get a disability lawyer I. Sure there is one in your area.

Inflation was 6.2% thanks for letting us fall behind.
