older adults standing and talkingMore than 71 million Americans will see a 3.2% increase in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2024. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by more than $50 per month starting in January.

Federal benefit rates increase when the cost-of-living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W). The CPI-W rises when inflation increases, leading to a higher cost-of-living. This change means prices for goods and services, on average, are higher. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) helps to offset these costs.

We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. But if you want to know your new benefit amount sooner, you can securely obtain your Social Security COLA notice online using the Message Center in your personal account. You can access this information in early December, prior to receiving the mailed notice. Benefit amounts will not be available before December. Since you will receive the COLA notice online or in the mail, you don’t need to contact us to get your new benefit amount.

If you prefer to access your COLA notice online and not receive the mailed notice, you can log in to your personal my Social Security account to opt out by changing your preferences in the Message Center. You can update your preferences to opt out of the mailed COLA notice, and any other notices that are available online. Did you know you can receive a text or email alert when there is a new message waiting for you? That way, you always know when we have something important for you – like your COLA notice. If you don’t have an account yet, you must create one by November 14, 2023, to receive the 2024 COLA notice online.

“Social Security and SSI benefits will increase in 2024, and this will help millions of people keep up with expenses,” said Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security.

January 2024 marks when other changes will happen based on the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax in 2024 will be higher. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will also change in 2024.

Be among the first to know! Sign up for or log in to your personal my Social Security account today. Choose email or text under “Message Center Preferences” to receive courtesy notifications.

You can find more information about the 2024 COLA here.

I don’t understand why the government gives you extra money on your check when they take it out in rent. so how is that helping?

  2. J S.

? Why do people that never worked. Get checks each month almost as much as the ones that work most all there life.? Then they get Medicare + medicaid so they pay nothing. But the people that worked & paid in to Medicare can’t get medicaid.

    • Janine M.

They’re getting that money off of someone else’s benefits. If someone hasn’t worked, and isn’t covered by someone else, they can purchase Medicare coverage. If they qualify for Medi-Caid, they may pay for the coverage.

    • Cheryl T.

I don’t understand that either. You get an increase but it’s taken out for Medicare payment and then what you do get after that is less than what you started out with, but your bills don’t change

    • Mary m.

Because ssl is not thinking about people who work is look like we work for them to sit at home and get pay

    • S.D.

Hi, J. Shockley. Thanks for reading our blog and for your question. You may be getting our programs confused. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program that makes payments to adults and children with disabilities who have limited income and resources. People 65 and older with limited income and resources may also be eligible for SSI. Social Security benefits, on the other hand, are based on a worker’s earnings and are not subject to income and resource limits. To learn more, check out our Frequently Asked Questions.

Medicare and Medicaid are also different. Medicare is a federal health insurance program while Medicaid is a state-run health insurance program. Eligibility rules are different in each state. To apply for Medicaid or to get more information, please call your state medical assistance office. You can also get the local phone number by calling 1-800-Medicare. We hope this helps.

It’s 12/19/23 and I have yet to receive information on my COLA.

    • Wesly D.

Ig getting a whopping $30 more a month as my food alone went up $30 along with the rise of electric $30.

      • Deannna D.

It’s really sad that those who do not pay into the system is getting the money we pay into like some of my patients they told me that they Neve paid into the system some were Money runners back in the 40’s and 50’s some ran brothel houses. Some are even immigrants who come over here who gets so Social Security and they may be sick or their children. They have lupus, MS, and they never pay into the system. That’s very unfair. I worked since I was 14 years old and the money that I’m getting is a pit of what I should be getting I applied for both Ssa/ SSD Social Security office told me I can only get one like why is that when people are getting money when they should be getting welfare and food stamps then some of my patients told me well that your government they’re willing to give me money that I never paid into so who I’m I to turn it away..and some of them were getting six and $700 a month I’m like so I’m paying for you to sit on your butt, even though you’re sick and old, you should be getting welfare / food stamps only I don’t understand the government at all…

    • Alan k.

Because your government is run by a bunch of thieves! Nowhere near what the average person needs to keep up with inflation, yet illegals get whatever they need without ever contributing to this country! Disgusting!!

      • Rita B.

I thought we were going to get more than that. that isn’t enough. they can send all of our money to Iran, Ukraine and the illegal’s flooding our southern border……. FOGET ABOUT US!!!!!

    • S.D.

So 3.2 % increase in social security and millions of dollars goes to Ukraine?
Rent increase in Florida is up $300 per month.
I want to leave it there because the list goes on an on..

    • Reyne

Zero of our tax dollars should be going to Ukraine; it’s only being laundered back to the Biden Crime Family and their cohorts.

      • Rita B.

        I AGREE

    • Al K.

The cost of living (inflation) is much more than this. Lame!

  6. Laura

Voting Red or Blue is not Black and White. The simplicity of using the Color Crayon System is over. We can no longer trust or relax with the colors our parents or grandparents chose. We can’t blame them, they didn’t recognize that they were being lied to in a much more innocent time and that’s just one aspect
of failure. Our own irresponsibility is in our excuses for not personally seeking out the past of the people who we allow to represent us and taking the time to know who we really are voting for is another. But you see, we’re mostly honest people, we didn’t expect to be lied to but neither did Adam & Eve. Our excuses are real and It’s out of hand when the media, being our only means of information, are dishonest, treasonous, cheats. A complete theater of rats and snakes with their pockets bursting in cash recieved and lusting in it. Asleep at the wheel, tired, distracted, frustrated, working 80 hrs a week, maybe 3 jobs, children to look after trying to find out who’s who. Half of Red is Blue and most of Blue is living in your check book. Time to wake up!

    • Carol S.

      You are exactly right!

    • Ron B.

      I didn’t receive a letter from s.s. for my
      New benefits

      • Darlene S.

I have not received my statement of benefits for 2024

      • S.D.

Hi, Ron. Thanks for reading our blog and for your comment. We’re mailing the 2024 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) notices throughout December, so please look for your notice in the mail. For more information, visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

        • JOhn

This only shows the % of increase – I want to see how much I’m actually going to get after taxes and Medicare, etc is taken out. As of today 12-19-2023 this information is NOT available.

          • Al K.

I think the amount is the net. Mine is lower than my gross, but falls in line with the 3+% increase (which is lower than the actual increase in the REAL cost of living).

  7. BENNIE L.

    VOTE TRUMP 2024….ITS CRITICAL!!

    • Freddie

He will eliminate SS & Medicare — Since he plans on getting rid of most Federal workers who process those claims !!!

      • Rita B.

where did you get your information?

    • John D.

      Heck NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Jimmy

Wake up trup is a wanna be dictator in bed with Puttinno way he’s the devil

    • Reyne

      AGREED 100%.

For anyone who thinks otherwise, how are you enjoying being infiltrated by illegals and having your tax dollars repeatedly auto fill their government issued bank cards with billions of your/our tax dollars. In addition, how’s the inflation and cost of living working out for you? Open your eyes, Trump hasn’t been our acting president for over three years now, so ask yourselves… WHO is responsible for our country’s current mess?

      • Ronald B.

        Republicans

      • Pam S.

Thank you Reyne!!! I am SO tired of hearing extreme supporters of those currently occupying the white house blame every negative thing over the last three years on president Trump.

    • Preston P.

Trump ain’t allowed to run or be on the ballot ever again two federal courts have already declared him unfit for holding office due to crimes of insurgency now the supreme courts are charging him as well he’s not as great as paper (unsure where this paper is) makes him out to be yea he was better then Biden but come on open ur eyes trumps about one agenda his own and all he cares about is money money money power money and prostitutes

    • Rita B.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Something has GOT to be done!!!!!!

  8. Marthapayne

    A joke a joke ajoke

    • Candy

I was told my SSI wouldn’t be dropped as long as my income didn’t exceed $2000 a month . Well that was a lie they about took all my SSI I’m lost I might be homeless if someone doesn’t stop taking from me and start helping us who’s already drowning.

      • Kia P.

I agree even though I was working as a seasonal employee and working only 20 hours a week including flex hours they said I made too much income so they took almost $700 and gave me $302 for December. And get this now that I’m not working they still owe me money they took

        • Preston P.

You won’t get that money I promise. I was owed 24 months of back pay had five start top notch lawyers from the cities got awarded 18,800k and approved for ssi not ssdi they took 14,200 of my backpay and sent my lawyers 4,700 their reasoning is because I supposedly owed 11,200 in over payments, (first time ever hearing bout it) from when I was a minor and that they were allowed to take my entire back pay, wrong if your on ssdi yes they can take all ur back pay. But if your on supplemental security income they aren’t to touch your back pay because it’s supplemental income since not able to work instead they were supposed to take 10% of my monthly checks (which they did for the first 3 checks on top of the 14k, that was in June July and August of this year.) Then I call to confront them think I got anywhere nope instead my case manager refused to take my call so I had to deal with a very rude and disrespectful asshole dude who who’s vocabulary consisted of ” she’s not taken calls right now ” and we can take your back pay for what you owe there was a letter mailed out” I replied o I got a letter which is in my hand and what my letter stated was exactly what I said they’d take 10% of my monthly checks and my backpay will be paid every 6 months. Once I replied to his comment by reading him my letter he told me very rudely we’ll go get a fucking job then and hung up and I’ve been calling back since August and my calls haven’t even been answered since. And I get the bare minimum and to reply to his go get a fucking job comment mother fucker I have one fucking leg had to have my left leg amputated and had testimonial reports from Doctors I don’t even know state there will never be any job on earth that will hire me because I’d be an insurance liability and for safety concerns and regulations If there was a need to move quickly or whatever I’d be screwed. It’s now Christmas and I haven’t gotten anything except my monthly checks I have sent an email to the inspector generals office and filed a complaint as well as the attorney generals office. And to my states senator and the governor and sent in proof of all of it.

      • S.D.

We’re sorry to hear about your situation, Candy. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We encourage you to work with your local Social Security office. We hope your situation is resolved soon.

  9. Gwen J.

We are always complaining and not enough of THANK you LORD. The Bible says give Thanks in all things. We all are in need of more but we are not outdoors. I had to learn to live differently because of inflation. Blue or Red arguments won’t solve the problems. We need God fearing men and women in the places of authority. JESUS is the only answer to what’s going on all over the world. Let’s just love one another and live peacefully with each other. LORD please take control of everything in this world. I’m praying for GODLY changes in all our lives 🙏. AMEN

    • Preston P.

Dude a dead man can’t do a fucking thing for the living and that’s a fact god, please where’s the proof that he ever in the history of the world ever existed there is nun u believe in emptiness there’s no god there’s no devil yes there’s a higher power but it ain’t god your believe what’s in a book start living reality no prayers get answered u pray to empty air looking at the ceiling or floor or whatever god don’t exist if he did the world and humans he cares so much for wouldn’t be fucked and bad shit wouldn’t keep happening church and god is just another human organization cult but that’s just my beliefs once god comes and shows himself in a humans body and actually turna the Rivera into blood and heals the sick and all that other bullshit actually happens in reality, then I’ll believe it…. It’ll never happen god was suppose to have risen from the dead every year for the last ten years well where is he, nowhere not even barries cus he never existed to begin with. Sry reality is a bitch when it slaps the delirious ones in the face…
Now in reality if u want/need something there’s only one person you can count on and that’s yourself noone else can or will do it for u

      • Pam S.

I’m sincerely sad for all the pain you’ve experienced in life Preston and the difficult times piled on you now. Your anger is clear in your writing.
You made a comment that confused me. “… once god comes in a human body …” There are historical records that have been documented by historians, who may not have believed in God or the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But, that doesn’t change the factual proof of their findings.
God did come to earth as a baby and took on human form/body; His name was Jesus. He performed miracles, was crucified, died, was buried, rose from the dead, walked on the earth interacting with people for a limited number of days, and then ascended to Heaven. There are historical records of people’s accounts of what they actually saw! And, there are documents foretelling details about His birth, life, and even His death, dated hundreds of years before He came to earth. Every one has come true!
Jesus is God, and He was perfect, so He gave His perfect life as a sacrifice for all of us who are sinners. We have all sinned and God is perfect and Holy. Jesus’ sacrifice and His perfect blood covers those who accept Him as God and allows us to have fellowship with God. God is not a force in Heaven to do everything we ask of Him. I mean, even parents don’t give their children things that they know are not good for them! Thus, He is often blamed for “not answering prayers”. He has all the facts behind the scene, we do not.
You seem to imply that God would force people to make “good” choices. Nope! He has given each one of us freedom to choose our words and actions. We are not His puppets! It is because of mean, hurtful, evil actions and words of humans that the world is a mess. Don’t blame God for the messed up government systems in our country, or wars that kill or mame people, or a child being beaten by a parent, or someone drunk from alcohol who chooses to drive a car and ends up killing or maming the loved one of another. God was not to blame when I used to sit around depressed because of this or that … I made the choice to avoid being around others and to sit and pout rather than thinking positive thoughts.
I truly pray that you would be open to giving God a chance to show you His love and the difference it could make in your life. It’s not a relationship of “do it my way” God!

    • Ryzon S.

      Amen
