Social Security Benefits Increase in 2023
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 2, 2023
Approximately 70 million Americans will see a 8.7% increase in their Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments in 2023. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January.
Federal benefit rates increase when the cost-of-living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index (CPI-W). The CPI-W rises when inflation increases, leading to a higher cost-of-living. This change means prices for goods and services, on average, are higher. The cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) helps to offset these costs.
We will mail COLA notices throughout the month of December to retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSI recipients, and representative payees. But if you want to know your new benefit amount sooner, you can securely obtain your Social Security COLA notice online using the Message Center in your personal my Social Security account. You can access this information in early December, prior to receiving the mailed notice. Benefit amounts will not be available before December. Since you will receive the COLA notice online or in the mail, you don’t need to contact us to get your new benefit amount.
If you prefer to access your COLA notice online and not receive the mailed notice, you can log in to your personal my Social Security account to opt out by changing your Preferences in the Message Center. You can update your preferences to opt out of the mailed COLA notice, and any other notices that are available online. Did you know you can receive a text or email alert when there is a new message waiting for you? That way, you always know when we have something important for you – like your COLA notice. If you don’t have an account yet, you must create one by November 15, 2022 to receive the 2023 COLA notice online.
“Medicare premiums are going down and Social Security benefits are going up in 2023, which will give seniors more peace of mind and breathing room. This year’s substantial Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is the first time in over a decade that Medicare premiums are not rising and shows that we can provide more support to older Americans who count on the benefits they have earned,” Acting Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi said.
January 2023 marks when other changes will happen based on the increase in the national average wage index. For example, the maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax in 2023 will be higher. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will also change in 2023.
Be among the first to know! Sign up for or log in to your personal my Social Security account today. Choose email or text under “Message Center Preferences” to receive courtesy notifications.

Long story, but what a joke. I was a teacher, got sick and lost my job and had to use my pension as it was prior to receiving ss. Now, that is all I have to live on. So, 8.7 percent gave me an extra 72. each month…Whoopie, EBT dropped by 40. Housing will increase in July to 21, plus. Basically, this increase will cost more than it is worth. We are wise to the games of the Feds. Give from this hand, but snatch from this one. PLUS, a lot of people will now pay taxes on their money, for the SECOND TIME. What a world. And I live in a NON-SMOKING PROPERTY, am on oxygen (from teaching in a condemned building) and the landlord who gets a subsidy for my existence WON’T KICK THE SMOKERS TO THE CURB. Glad you appreciated my years of teaching; in my next life I think I’ll be “WOKE.”

Happy New Year, I have friends who received an increase in the Social Security but I didn’t get anything, I wonder why.

For birth dates that fall on the 1st through the 10th, recipients are paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
For birth dates that fall on the 11th through the 20th, recipients are paid on the third Wednesday of each month.
For birth dates that fall on the 21st through the 31st, recipients are paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

My birthdate is April 20th. I have been receiving my check on the 3rd of each month including the January amount. My bills including my house payment is due on the 1st of each month which I pay that on the 3rd when I see it deposited on my bank statement. How will this effect me? The mortgage company will not change my payment date and I don’t want to be late on that payment. Please help me…….
A.C.
Hi, Judy. We are sorry to hear about your situation. You cannot cannot change your payment date. It is based on the birthday of the person on whose record you receive benefits. For more information, visit our blog post, What Day of the Month Do I Get my Social Security Payment. We hope this helps.

The only way to get anything done is to write your local WOKE Senator. They can intervene where no one else can or will.

I didn’t get anything

Yes we got a small raise but my supplement went up everthing is up what are we suspose to do I can barely get gro.?
Lynn K.
My supplement went up 8.7%, but my rent went up 10%. I’m barely making it. How about quit raising the minimum wage, so the rents don’t go up. California rents are impossible, and then people wonder why there are so many homeless in Sacramento. Put a cap on the rent. If the owner has owned the property for 5 or even 10 years, it;s not like their mortgage payment has gone up because of wage increases. It’s just greed, that makes them raise the rent.

I’m on SSI and SSDI I still make under $900 a month even with the stupid SSI increase for cola it doesn’t increase money more than $50 at all whatsoever I get under $100 in food stamps so I’m supposed to live on under $900 and less than 100 in food stamps by myself all these stimulus in text and all that the babe promise or increases they promise of up to 100 and something a month for social security is a lie. As it says on average well I guess I’m not average I’m blow blow blow average
bud e.
There are no increases. They lie like a rug. They tell you they are giving you a increase but take it and then some for insurance. They did it to me. I got the raise and they took right away along with more money. So when the government says they are giving you a raise. You can believe that they are going to take money from you
Richard R.
I believe people on Medicaid. Is making more money than people on Social Security. They could get free housing, free medical, food stamps, and they never pay anything into Social Security. They work off the books. Never report anything. And don’t forget they get free legal service also. I’m a person with dyslexia. You know, I had at work heavy physical jobs. But. People go to college and then they get on Medicaid. Because they didn’t want to work. Or they just want to get drunk, or use drugs or . And when you write to Congress and senators, it’s like throwing pennies in their Wishing well.
And the worst thing they could do is raise minimum wage up.
And people on Medicaid. They get all the news on all the benefits. Because they have a caseworker. They get free phone, free Internet. How many scams out there? That says, we are entitled to. Extra benefits, but it seems like it’s all time coming from a company that wants to make money on us that are on. Medicare. And no one ever taught me to use the computer. I’m so obsolete. But do they offer seniors any extra help? On learning the computers.
francine J.
you are right about everything you said. you can go to any of the career centers, and they will train you on how to use a computer and its free good luck.
DEBRA S.
I’m at poverty level on ssi and they said $ 140
IS the raise we were supposed to get, how come I got $84. The ones that don’t need help get the big raises ,.I didn’t make a lot of money from my jobs. IT’S NOT FAIR
BEING TREATED UNFAIRLY.
Christina M.
I got even less . It really sucks to hope to live at all on less than 900 a mo.
Alli M.
How do you think I feel? I spent years teaching and had college loans, now find out that in most states, minimum wage is MORE than I made after going to college, and all they are doing is flipping a burger. They get every benefit as the guy said prior to this post, as well. So of course, these human’s social security will be higher than MINE…and all they did is show up to curse out a customer.
Nancy D.
“Average”. So if you get less than average each month from SSA you get 8,7% on your total
francine J.
they give you a raise and take it back with other ways.
CORNELIUS J.
Because of the fact I am a widower and have a generous pension I find myself about to get a reduction of $52 per mo. in my current benefits notwithstanding the 8% COLA. Due to the IRMMA I will be billed for both my Standard Medicare as well as my Medicare Part B ($164.80 each) which results in a 2023 monthly benefit of $1016 compared with my current $1064. Is that correct?
A.C.
