Two people walking up the stairs in a school settingThe Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.

The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.

“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”

The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. It does so by providing an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they earned.

Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

FDR-social security (ss) never taxable. 1972/3-government made funding changes that they said would guarantee solvency of ss forever. Reagan-tax up to 50% of ss by a formula & install ‘double dip’ provisions for ss benefits. Clinton-up to 85% of ss taxed by formula. Biden-eliminated ‘double dip’ provision of Reagan reducing solvency of ss trust fund by one year (this benefits recipients having both ss & a government pension only). The Reagan formula has thresholds to determine the taxable amount of ss benefits which have never been increased for inflation-these amounts should be at least doubled which would reduce taxability of ss benefits by 25 to 32 thousand dollars. I am glad congress is so generous to us seniors!!

It is completely inappropriate to use SSA’s email capabilities to send out what is nothing more than a press release.

    Do better.

Yes, SSA did post messages on its site thanking Biden and Harris for things in the past. This is not the first message where they tend to thank the administration. As to the tax deduction, it isn’t that complicated. As to the tax on Soc Sec retirement benefits, it cannot be rolled back without an amendment. I would thank President Reagan and then Senator Joe Biden at the time for taxing the recipients in the first place. Research the topic if you want to see who did this to the beneficiaries in the first place. And if you don’t want posts that are applauding something, then you should have said something back when SSA was thanking Biden and Harris for something. I read the blog all the time. Think for yourself. Don’t let your party think for you . We are all old enough to know better if we are following this blog. SSA does a great job.

Excuse me but this is not accurate. It’s not right to mislead seniors like this. Very upsetting.

This is my wife’s and my first year paying taxes on our combined social security and we had a $5,000 liability, though we had significant deductions. If I understand correctly, this is the last year we will have to pay taxes on our social security. I’m not clear on how the enhanced deduction will affect our tax liability if I return to work as we planned. It seems too good to be true to have additional tax breaks for earned income.

I read an article that indicates there is the elimination of taxes on social security for those individuals making less than $75,000 adjusted annually and $150,000 for married couples. That would be great if it is permanent and those thresholds are adjusted upward as time and inflation goes on. Then there is the $6000 deduction on income for seniors. It’s temporary. Hopefully it will be made permanent and gets adjusted with inflation. I’m crossing my fingers for this tax relief on SS income. Total repeal would have been better. The current tax on SS income was levied first by a republican and a democrat increased it a few years later.

Using this email to appease Trump is just wrong. THE BIG bill. was the Republicans pleasing Trump. Increasing the debit celling to appease the mega wealth and trump giving Himself and buddies a hand out on the backs of the poor and disabled. This email was a lie read the article in the guardian. To the REPUBLICANS you’re a disappointment to humanity.

They aren’t exactly “pleasing” President Trump, he is implementing his agenda which he ran on. It might be something we haven’t seen before, but he is doing what he said he would do to a certain extent. Also, you do not have to have taxes withheld from your SS, so a $6000 tax credit could mean you pay no taxes, not just you may get some back. Good job getting your talking points out though.
