Two people walking up the stairs in a school settingThe Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.

The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.

“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”

The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. It does so by providing an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they earned.

Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.

This is not completely accurate information. The law does not eliminate the tax on Social Security. It adds a $6000 “Senior Deduction” to those age 65 and over. It phases out for married couples making over $250,000 per year ($175,000 for single filers). It is also only temporary thru 2028.

What I would like to see is a breakdown with examples of how this actually works. I understand the part of the increase in deduction for three years but I don’t understand how this eliminates tax on Soc Sec and how that happens for nearly ninety percent. Would you be willing to post some examples of single persons and married persons and how this calculates. Or post a calculator where we can put in figures to see how it would work out? Thank you

Without additional information, this tax break for seniors over 65 who qualify based on other criteria only increases their standard deduction. This has nothing to do with reducing social security taxable income.

Totally the current administrations spin so that it sounds good. Just like the rest of the Big B——t Bill. They don’t give you the actual, true result, just what they want you to believe.

Thank god for passing the big beautiful bill. Step one in saving SS. We can now focus on creating a better funding sources for benefits including SS.
After years of betrayal and mismanagement by the crooked democrat party and their cronies in the Washington establishment I have switched my party to Republican and happily voted President Donald trump back into office. So glad America chose him. I’m a proud union member and Army veteran and I am grateful for Donald J. Trump.
    Happy birthday America.

Happy Birthday, dipshort. The joke’s on you. You must have about two working brain cells if you believe Trump’s lies. You and the rest of the nation are being gaslit on the supposed tax savings for seniors. There are no specifics mentioned and we’ll all be paying more everywhere including taxes. Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.

Shame on you. You need to start with Reagan, another republican who screwed it up along with Bush. This isn’t saving it, but keep drinking the Kool Aid.

It looks like this bill does absolutely nothing for low income people on SSI. Since the alleged lowering of utilities never happened and my cost of living raise on SSI was erased by higher utility rates, I’m losing money. I won’t qualify for food stamps now. At this rate I will be joining the ranks of the homeless.

You should spend more time worrying about people who have been approved for benefits months ago but aren’t receiving them than high fiving this big beautiful bill. And why if you call a local office to straighten out an issue do you get rerouted to offices in another state and wait for a call back that never comes? But I can take comfort that my loved one won’t have to pay taxes on the benefits they don’t receive.
