Social Security Administration LogoI am pleased to announce that local Social Security offices will restore in-person services, including for people without an appointment, on April 7, 2022.

To avoid waiting in line, I strongly encourage people who can, to use our online services, call us, and schedule appointments in advance rather than walking in without an appointment.

Phone appointments can save you a trip to a busy office. I thank the public for your patience as we work to increase service.

Customers who walk in without appointments may encounter delays and longer waits at our offices. Before coming to an office, we encourage you to visit our Emergency page to check the office status. Be aware that our offices tend to be the busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and during the early part of the month, so people may want to plan to visit at other times.

Given that many of the people we serve have health vulnerabilities, and consistent with our union agreements, we are continuing to require certain safety measures including masking (regardless of local guidance), physical distancing, and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms. We will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

Online Services and telephone remain the most convenient ways to contact the agency.

Most Social Security services are available to the public online and with a my Social Security account, or by telephone. And most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. People may create their my Social Security account, a personalized online service, on our website. Many Social Security services are also conveniently available by dialing toll-free, 1‑800‑772‑1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1‑800‑325‑0778.

As we transition to a new modern phone system, some people may experience a busy signal or be unintentionally disconnected from their call. We sincerely regret this disruption and recommend people call when our National 800 Number may be less busy, such as before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. local time or later in the week. Like our offices, our waits are generally shorter later in the month.

Could you be more difficult to deal with? I think not

  2. Henery C.

Would you kindly elaborate on the lack of an online appointment system? Surely it would lessen both your workload and the amount of time customers wait on hold?

I went on and made an online application for SSN as I just arrived in the US with a J1 Visa. I failed to save any indicator of such application, save from the fact that I have a picture of the “what to bring” part. Should I still call and make an appointment or is the one I made online application (which does not specify a date but just says to appear within 45 days) enough?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Kenneth. Thanks for visiting our blog. Most local offices have resumed in-person service for people without an appointment. I am trying to make an appointment at my local Ventura SSA office. I tried doing this online but was directed to your 800 number. I have been on hold for an hour.

Please explain why you do not have an online appointment system? Surely it would reduce your workload as well as time wasted on hold by the general public?

    • Joan

Agree 100%! And you should be able to make an appointment with someone who specializes in your issue. I actually called, got someone to make an appointment for my issues – I was very specific – and the letter confirming the appointment did not in the least describe what I need to discuss. I am gathering information for when I file in 2 years, but they think I am applying now.

    To whom it may Concern:

My Name is Eduardo Moreno DOB 2-27-1930, Social Security # ***-**-****. I writing to you out of desperation and frustration, I’m a 95-year-old US Citizens who thought out the years paid taxes and abide by this Country laws, I been diagnose with Parkinson disease and diabetes.
Recently, on July 20th, 2022, I moved with My Son Cesar Moreno at 2071 Renaissance Blvd. # 102 Miramar, Florida 33025 in the County of Broward, I changed my living arrangement address at the local Social Security office located 12249 Pembroke Road. Pembroke Pines, FL 33025 which is also in the County of Broward, the agents at this office were very rude and disrespectful when I pointed out to them that the County on the address was left as Dade county and NOT changed correctly to Broward County, they told me that, the county that automatically populated was Dade which is incorrect, NOW I’m having problems changing my health plan because the Florida Medicaid Manage Care says that unless the Social Security administration makes the correction from Dade County to the correct County Broward they can’t make the change, I’ve receive long time home health care because of my health conditions and I have NOT been receiving this benefit or my medication for 3 weeks now, causing me lots of depression and anxiety.
I’m begging YOU to please assist me with the correction of the County from Dade County to Broward County on my new address at 2071 Renaissance Blvd. #102 Miramar, Florida 33025, so that I may be able to change health plans to one that covers my County and can receive my long-time home health care I need, is a simple fix that means the world to me. May God bless you for your understanding and help to this 92-year-old man.
    Sincerely,

    Eduardo Moreno

  9. SSA C.

    SSA office at Mission Viejo, CA 92691  is the most inept and most frustrating organization one can ever experience for the following reasons;
    1) Calls made at their number 888-3069878 are hardly ever answered. When they do answer, sometimes after hours and hours long wait, they either hang up without even saying “Hello” OR, they give hard times, they are rude and when asked to talk to a Supervisor, it is sent to their voicemail, which is never returned.
    2) Requesting an appointment requires a phone call to them, it cannot be done online, and again calling SSA is a nightmare.
    3) Entire world including US Govt offices now are open like pre-pandemic hours for business, but this location has staff still in their own world.
    4) SSA phone calls do not provide an option to request a call back like most private companies do.
    4) SSA recipients are mostly elderly who are already OLD, SICK, cannot run errands, or stay on the phone for an extremely long time. Why does the SSA office location treat people this bad, especially the ones who need their help?
    5) When a family member – child, or family tries to help on their behalf, they do not help even when the family is on the phone and authorized to speak on their behalf.
    6) Today after over 40 minutes long wait, automated voice said they are busy, call back later! This is NOT right.

This location needs to be investigated for their extreme abuse of their position and for their practice that does NOT align to the SSA office’s mission.

This is the worse service. I have been waiting since 7:00 am until the offices open at 9:00a.m
I received a number and it has not been call out for almost 4:00 hours.
The online services will not allowed me to update my citizenship status.
I’m a US. veteran and it is a shame that the federal agencies don’t communicate with each other.
I had to take a day off to take care of this my citizenship status.
