Replace Your Social Security Card Online in 43 States and the District of Columbia

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve added Connecticut, Ohio, and Utah to the growing list of states where you can go online to replace your Social Security card. In many cases, you may not need a replacement card. Most of the time, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough.
If you do need to replace your lost or misplaced Social Security card, our online application makes getting a replacement card easier than ever. Online card replacement is available if you live in the District of Columbia or one of the 43 states that can verify state ID information for us. If you’re only requesting a replacement card and you’re making no changes, you may be able to use our free online service.
All you need to do is create a personal my Social Security account and meet certain requirements. Opening a personal my Social Security account is easy, convenient, and secure. Once you have a personal account, simply follow the instructions to request a replacement Social Security card.
You can apply for a replacement card online, if you:
- Are a U. S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address (this includes APO, FPO, and DPO addresses);
- Are not requesting any changes to your card (including a name change); and
- Have a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card.

And for the rest of us, who have entered this country just before everything went to hell, who need a SSN post-relocation? We’re just screwed, because nothing is reopening and initial SSNs can’t be granted without an in-person appointment. Sucks to be us!

Thank you, my social security card is fine. However there is a nagging issue that concerns me about access to a Social Security account. At present one needs to have a US mailing address to have an account and enjoy access to one’s information.. I think the restriction there is due to security concern, but I think the concern is outdated and someone needs to reevaluate the requirement. I do have a house in Florida, but I live in Israel most of the year, so I would not claim that I have a US address although I may be technically correct. In any case I feel the restriction is not fair to all the Americans who reside outside thr US

I became a naturalized American Citizen last December 2019. Do I need to request for a replacement Social Security Card?

Congratulations, Oscar! You will need to update your Social Security record by showing us your Certificate of Naturalization and completing an application for a replacement card. All documents must be either originals or certified copies by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. If you do not want to mail in your documents, which will be returned, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen. Use our Social Security Office Locator to find your local office address.

Someone called me on the phone the other day asking me if I had my new card, referring to me with the suffix “3rd” , they asked me for my card ID number which Red Flagged. I hung up, and looked up their phone number on Google. It was a nonexistent phone number. It was a scam attempt!!!!!!!
