Online Bill Payment for Medicare Premiums

If your bank offers the option to pay your bills online, you can use their service to pay for your Medicare premiums bill from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

You, or your representative, must sign up for your bank’s online bill payment process and you can contact your bank directly for assistance. Social Security and CMS are not involved in establishing the online bill pay service with your bank. Before you contact your bank to set up the process, make sure you have the following information available:

  1. Amount of your Medicare premium bill
  2. Account number: Medicare claim number without dashes. You can find this number on the red, white, and blue Medicare card.
  3. Biller name: CMS Medicare Insurance
  4. Biller’s address:

You’ll need to tell the bank how much money to deduct from your account to pay for the Medicare premium. You’ll also need to update the amount with your bank whenever there is a change in the Medicare premium amount. This usually happens in January when CMS announces the new Medicare premium rates. You can find more information at Medicare.gov or CMS’s online bill pay webpage.

Remember, CMS does not charge a fee for processing the electronic payments, but in some situations, a bank may charge their customers a fee for using their online bill payment service. If you have any questions about bill pay, please contact your bank or financial institution directly. You can also visit CMS’s  online bill pay for more information on paying your Medicare premiums.

    Hi Ray,

    I DO NOT NEED MEDICARE. I mailed a detailed letter to my local SSA office on November 7, 2018 and again on December 20, 2018, stating I DID NOT want Medicare enrollment because I already continue to have, and have had for many years, full hospital, medical, drugs, vision, and hearing coverage through my spouses employer which has a few hundred employees. I also filed this online.

    However, SSA still deducted the $134 medicare premium from my monthly social security retirement benefit on December 26, 2018. How can I stop this and get a refund? Thanks.

    Just a note to ensure it is recorded that I am trying to contact SSA and/or Medicare reference my 1st Medicare billing that I received Dec 22, 2018. I am on the phone calling, but the voice message wait announcement says my wait will be 1 hour 30 minutes.
    I signed up for SS benefits to start Dec 2018. I turned 65 recently and as such my Tricare Retireee program is ending Dec 31st and I was required to sign up for Medicare Part A and B in order to transfer to the FEDVIP program. I signed up for both A and B to start 1 Jan, 2019.
    I received a bill from Medicare on Dec 22, 2018. It is marked “Part B First Bill” The billing statement shows that my monthly Part B premium is $135.00/month. It also states that the amount owed is $540.50, and is to be paid in full no later than Dec 25, 2018 (yes, only 3 days to pay, and on Christmas day!.) I tried to call the number provided on Saturday 22 Dec, 2018 but the SSA offices were closed. I am calling now, and have been on hold for over 30 minutes, with another hour to go according to the voice that keeps coming on my phone.
    Anyway, when I signed up for SSA the representative helping me asked I I wanted my Medicare premiums taken from my monthly SSA entitlement. I said yes and it was set up to be an automatic withdrawal of $271.00 in Jan 2019,(the first 2 premium payments) and $135.50/month thereafter.
    So my obvious questions are
    a) Why am I being billed $540.50?
    b) Why do I only have 3 days to pay my bill?
    c) Why isn’t my auto withdrawal in effect?

    I hope to be able to resolve this issue quickly.

    we received a letter for my husbands medicare premium bill dated 11-27-2018…however we received the letter 12-21-18 with payment being due 12-25-18!!! 4 days to make payment… Why. Not feasible at this time. However my husband will be receiving Social Security benefits in February 2019. Is it possible to make only one or two months payment.?
