Online Bill Payment for Medicare Premiums

Social Security is here with tools and information to help you secure today and tomorrow. Did you know that you can pay your Medicare premiums online? If your bank offers the option to pay your bills online, you can use their service to pay for your Medicare premiums bill from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
You, or your representative, must sign up for your bank’s online bill payment process and you can contact your bank directly for assistance. Social Security and CMS are not involved in establishing the online bill pay service with your bank. Before you contact your bank to set up the process, make sure you have the following information available:
- Amount of your Medicare premium bill
- Account number: Medicare claim number without dashes. You can find this number on the red, white, and blue Medicare card.
- Biller name: CMS Medicare Insurance
- Biller’s address:

You’ll need to tell the bank how much money to deduct from your account to pay for the Medicare premium. You’ll also need to update the amount with your bank whenever there is a change in the Medicare premium amount. This usually happens in January when CMS announces the new Medicare premium rates. You can find more information at Medicare.gov or CMS’s online bill pay webpage.
Remember, CMS does not charge a fee for processing the electronic payments, but in some situations, a bank may charge their customers a fee for using their online bill payment service. If you have any questions about bill pay, please contact your bank or financial institution directly. You can also visit CMS’s online bill pay for more information on paying your Medicare premiums.

Follow up questions to the one I asked on July 31, 2018. Summary: Before the automatic checking account payment for Medicare was stopped there was an overlap with the Medicare deduction from my social security check. This will be “automatically” detected and I will get a refund. Two questions:
1) Will this refund be a check(s) or deposit(s) back to my account?
2.) Is there a way I can check to see if the “stop” for the checking account payment has fully processed?

Hello Ray! If you’re currently receiving Social Security benefits via direct deposit, then the refund will be deposited into your account. A letter should follow notifying you of the payment. To check and see if the change has been established on your record, you will need to speak to one of our agents. You can call our toll free number at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Or contact your local Social Security office directly.

I received a letter on Monday, July 23 stating my credit card had been declined. I had until July 25 to send my initial premium in the amour of $402.00. I over-nighted a new credit card number on Monday, July 23. USPS tracking shows Delivered July 24, 2018 at 10:38 am Delivered, To Agent Saint Louis, MO 63179. How can I check to be sure that my initial premium was received in time to begin Medicare by August 1, 2018? (My 65th birthday is August 10.) Thank you.

I started paying for medicare last year. I had the payment automatically deducted from mychecking account. I started to receive my Social Security check, but two payments for medicare were deducted from my checking account before the automatic payment stopped. How do I get a refund for those two payments?

I don’t understand why a common scenerio of getting medicare at age 65 and paying medicare premium deductions directly and then transitioning to getting social security benefit checks with medicare premium deductions at age 66 is not documented on either the medicare or SSA websites. I would imagine thousands if not millions of people have the same question. Which month does the first Social security check premium deduction apply to. I have tried to get this answer through several methods and all I get is confusion. NO agent seems to know this. A prior answer from Ray Fernandez was also confusion since the statement that medicare premiums are always in advance was unclear whether you were talking about direct premium payments or SSA deduction payments. This needs to documented clearly with common examples instead of always referring to the 800 SSA helpline. No one wants to wait over an hour on hold. My local office has a wait time of over 4 hours. I tried to ask this via the email form and all I got back is generic nonsense about medicare premiums unrelated to my specific question. I directly pay premiums through the month of June. My first benefit check was also in June. Does the premium deduction either pay for:
a) previous month (MAY) same as the benefit check covers or
b) same month (JUNE) as the check arrives or
c) next month (JULY) as payment in advance just like personal direct premium payments.
I received no final quarterly statement (as of the end of September, i.e. over 90 days) showing which payments covered which months.
There is no online billing interface on the medicare or SSA websites in your customer portal as we all know.
As many have stated, waiting a long time on phone hold or waiting a long time at your local office is not appropriate for this GENERIC question that could be easily documented on the Medicare or SSA websites.

If you use the SSA chat interface, you can request a callback in 15 minutes. Many questions will be answered by that agent instead of waiting the one hour or more by calling SSA directly via their 800 number.
In my case, the answer was the medicare premium deduction on the retirement benefit check applies to the month that the check is received. For example, if your benefit is for October and you get paid in November as per the usual next month payment process, the deduction on that check also applies to November.

I just yesterday received my Medicare card. I turn 65 next month. I have not gotten a bill for my Medicare Premium. Please email me how much I will owe you monthly. I was told there is a form I am suppossed to fill out and mail in to Medicare in order to set up automatic payments-Easy Pay- from my checking account. This website indicates there’s no form. I just have to set up automatic payments with my bank. Is this true?

I tried for almost a hour to get to talk to someone on the phone but was disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. I decided to try on my phone at the web site social security my account. I was trying to report my accurate income of $5000 a month but it asked me questions that didn’t relate to me as for me having a mortgage which I don’t have, I rent since 2011. Also about a loan for a car and credit card. I have none of these and was kicked out of the website. I need to report my income and know what these other things are about with the mortgage and credit card. 570-688-3278

Hi, Jayne. If you get Social Security, Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), or Civil Service benefits, your Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) premiums will get deducted from your benefit payment. If you don’t get Social Security payments, RRB, or Civil Service benefits, you’ll get a bill called a “Medicare Premium Bill” (CMS-500). Visit http://www.medicare.gov for more information. I moved end of may and changed my address online. I paid 402.00 in May for my medicare but don’t know how to go about this for July as I have no bill yet. Please advise
