man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

I need al awards letter for my child please! Re: Lily Rene Carrillo Putnam SS XXX-XX-XXXX

    • V.V.

Hi Bernice, thank you for using our blog. If you need proof that your child receives Social Security benefits or Supplemental Security (SSI) Income, request a benefit verification letter. Often times this letter is referred to as a “budget letter,” a “benefits letter,” a “proof of income letter,” or a “proof of award letter.” Unfortunately, you cannot request a benefit verification letter online for another person, such as a spouse or child. To request a benefit verification letter for your child, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Just a reminder – Please be cautious about posting personal information on social media.

    • V.V.

Hi Jerrold. You can get a benefit verification letter online instantly by using your personal my Social Security account. This letter is sometimes called a budget letter, a benefits letter, a proof of income letter or a proof of award letter. To set up your account, visit the my Social Security web page and select, “Sign In or Create an Account.” You will need to provide some personal information to verify your identity, choose a username and password and follow the rest of the steps to finish creating your account. I am Dual Power of Attorney for my father. I need a copy of 1099 SS benefits for 2017 in order to help him get Medicaid/nursing home requested info. My father does not have a computer and does not want a paperless statement. Therefore I can not use the on line system. I requested 1099 form on line for him. 4-6 weeks? It would be easier to get form on line and then state that you still want paper statement sent. Im not really sure if the automatiive request worked because it just said thanks after I gave my fathers name and SS number.

    • V.V.

Hi Donna, thank you for the question. If your father is unable to create a my Social Security account or does not want to request it online, he may call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or he can contact his local Social Security office.

Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your father unless you are his representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your father does not authorize you to access information on his Social Security record. If your father does not have a representative payee and he is not capable of managing and directing his Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be his payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment.
