man on laptop We’re with you through life’s journey, putting you in control of your finances and future. Social Security has made requesting or replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you have the ability to download it anytime and anywhere you want using our online services. There’s no need to visit a field office.

An SSA-1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to IRS on your tax return.

If you currently live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form with a personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is typically available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you should access your online account and go to “Replacements Documents” to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop and email it. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating a secure account is very easy to do and usually takes less than 15 minutes.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S instead. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Securing today and tomorrow isn’t always easy, but Social Security continues to improve our customer service with easy to use online features. Visit our website for more information.

How do i get a copy of my late husbands SSA-1099 copy of benefits for 2017 for tax purposes Anthony F Stango 203 Banks Drive Winchester Va 22602 *** – ** – ***

    • R.F.

We’re sorry to hear about your loss, Sharon. In certain cases, we may disclose SSA-1099 information from the record of a deceased person, only to a survivor of the deceased and only if we are able to establish the relationship of the survivor to the deceased based on SSA records. You will need to go into the local Social Security office with proper identification and supporting documents to make a request for a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this information helps.

    • K.O.

Hi Ella, we are sorry to hear about your loss. Perhaps you need proof showing that you receive Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security (SSI) Income or Medicare. If that is the case, you can request a benefit verification letter online through your mySocialSecurity account. This letter is sometimes referred to as a “budget letter,” a “benefits letter,” a “proof of income letter,” or a “proof of award letter.”
To set up or use your account to get a benefit verification letter, go to Sign In Or Create An Account.
      We hope this helps.

I couldn’t find a way to request a 1099 for a year earlier than the previous year.

The statements regarding the ability to view and/or print a 1099 form from the My Social Security Account portal (from the replacement documents tab) is false, a complete load of crock. The option does not even show up under that tab, only replacements for a card, a statement or verification letter. Completely useless….

Can an individual who lives in Japan (with only a Japanese address) open an account online? If not, how can this individual receive a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S if none was received in the mail? Please advise and thank you in advance.

    • R.F.

Thank you for contacting us, Erwin. The “my Social Security” authentication system requires address verification as one of the essential criteria for issuing an account. People with APO/FPO/DPO addresses can create an account overseas, but our system does not support registration and account creation for users with a foreign address yet.
We recommend that individuals living outside the United States contact their nearest Federal Benefits Unit. Please read our publication “Your Payments While You are Outside the United States” for more important information. Thanks!

What phone number to I call to get a 2015 1099?

    • A.C.

Thanks for your question, Bruce. Social Security mails this form every January to people who receive Social Security benefits. For years prior, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to speak to one of our representatives for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait time if you call later in the day. Or you can contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.
