New Guidance about COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

“The Treasury Department launched a new web tool allowing quick registration for Economic Impact Payments for eligible individuals who do not normally file a tax return, and also announced that it would begin making automatic payments.  However, for some people receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration—specifically those who have dependent children under the age of 17—it is to their advantage to go to this portal to ensure they also get the $500 per dependent Economic Impact Payment.  I encourage them to do this as soon as possible, and want to provide the following details:

People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits and who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and who have qualifying children under age 17 should now go to the IRS’s webpage to enter their information instead of waiting for their automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment.  By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment.  If Social Security beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

The same new guidance also applies to SSI recipients, especially those who have qualifying children under age 17.  To receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for, go to the IRS’s Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info page and provide information about yourself and your qualifying children.

Additionally, any new beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, will also need to go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

Lastly, for Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who do not have qualifying children under age 17, you do not need to take any action with the IRS.  You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS as long as you received an SSA-1099 for 2019.

For SSI recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17, we continue to work closely with Treasury in our efforts to make these payments automatically.  Please note that we will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found at the IRS’s Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments page.  In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.”

LISA, YOU ARE SO WRONG- QUOTE FROM ‘LISA’- “Omg..I’m not trying to be rude..YoUR PAYMENT WILL COME ON YOUR CARD IF YOU HAVE A DIRECT EXPRESS CARD THAT YOU USE FOR YOUR PAYMENTS!”..
      You must be high.

    • Logan

People on here are posting misinformation regarding Direct Express. Don’t listen to these crazy people. Nothing has been printed to date that even remotely supports
Direct Express as a method of payment yet. IF it becomes available, there will be details probably on the 17th. Until then, please stop talking about Direct Express like you have some insider info that you are privy to simply because you
received your benefits for years via D.E.
You are most likely misunderstanding the recorded message that Direct Express plays when you call the number. This message is pertaining to benefit payments, NOT STIMULUS PAYMENTS. COME ON PEOPLE.

A lady in the above comments said she got hers. She said it came to her Direct Express card. Scroll way up!

Let’s use common sense for the people who are on SSDI. SSDI payments generate a 1099 Form at the end of the year. The treasury department and The IRS communicate information. Your Direct Express card has all the updated information which includes your Direct express account number. It’s the easiest route and most efficient way to distribute electronically. Secondly, these cards are utilized without a bank account. This means a paper check would be difficult for you to cash. Your money regarding SSDI recipients will go on your card. If SSDI people start becoming paranoid like someone that doesn’t know how to use a computer and starts pressing buttons to fix it, you will create a red flag that will be construed as fraud or a hack. Don’t go on the IRS Portal and out of anxiety start entering data, you’re going to regret it. It says in many places if your SSDI, no filing is necessary and your money will come electronically deposited. Electronic deposit some people because it doesn’t say direct express it just says Direct Deposit. That’s because you don’t have to use Direct express there are other electronic deposit systems so they blanket clause this as a guideline to all by using direct deposit. What if all the people let’s say as an example have a Wells Fargo debit card and they saw Direct express users will receive electronically their stimulus. Finally, the money will be released for this group last night but processing in the bank along with Easter and COVID 19 you won’t see this stimulus start to trickle in until Monday the 13th. Be patient and my advice doesn’t go to the portal if you’re SSDI. Where did I get this information? Common sense, past experience and Information I have read.

My question which is driving me nuts is. I was approved for disability in Oct of 2020. In November 2020, I was approved and started to receive payment. For 2018 and 2019 I did not file a Tax return. Making less then 10,000. I have it direct deposited to my bank account. Not direct express. Do I have to fill out a Non Fillers Form?

    • LaQuaya L.

No you don’t have file it out it come to your bank account like normal check would

I believe Trump putting his signature on them Jacked everything up. Trying to get his name on stuff for us to think he did something.
My check is supposed to be direct deposited into my account for Disablility. The claim it is done through the treasury when I called and waited.
I dont even know what a

    • V.V.

Hi Anthony, thank you for your question. New beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 should go to to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter their information.

  9. Logan

Who is this person on here that’s telling us that we might have to wait 5 months for a check?? READ THIS-
April 24, 2020- The IRS will begin sending paper stimulus checks. The plan is to send paper stimulus checks to taxpayers with the lowest adjusted gross income first. Therefore, taxpayers who earned less than $10,000 will receive a paper check first.

  10. Noah

Ssdi recipient..and married non-filer. Do we need to file or do we get stimulus amount for married filing jointly. Only I receive ssdi. I do get 1099.

    • V.V.

Hi Noah, thank you for your question. Economic impact payments will be made to eligible people who receive Social Security retirement, disability, or survivors benefits. The IRS will use SSA-1099 information that we provide them to automatically generate $1,200 economic impact payments to eligible Social Security beneficiaries who did not file tax returns in 2018 or 2019.

For information on eligibility for your spouse, please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payment Information Center.
