Getting Two SSI Payments in One Month

woman in a wheelchair going down a sidewalkFor most months in the year, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients get their SSI payment on the first day of the month. But when the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month. That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.

We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.

Below is an example of how this will work in January 2023. January 1, 2023 is the Federal holiday of New Year’s Day (it also happens to be a Sunday), so we will not issue your payment on January 1. Since December 31 is a Saturday—and we don’t issue a payment on a weekend—we will issue your SSI payment for the month of January on December 30, 2022. In this example, you get two SSI payments in December.

Example chart of two SSI payments in the same month

The first December payment, on December 1, is your regularly scheduled payment for December. The second December payment, on December 30, 2022, is your SSI payment for the month of January. You will not get an SSI payment in January because you received it in December.

On our website, we provide a Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for the current and upcoming calendar year.

Securing today and tomorrow starts with being informed. Please share this information with your friends and family—and post it on social media.

    • Mike B.

      Also no payment here

      • Melody W.

        None here, as well

    • Ellen T.

I just spoke with my bank and Monday is a holiday banks are closed so I’m thinking that tonight they’re going to be deposited cuz today is the 30th that’s what I’m hoping anyhow

    • Doug

    • Aleeyah W.

      I didn’t get mines either

    • Marion S.

I agree with you we haven’t gotten not one extra check. So does it mean that the people on SSDI are not supposed to get a extra check? I’m confused 🤔.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Bernice. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks.

I like to know why I never received these extra payments. According to what I read , everyone who receives SSI will get these payments, but NOT ME. Who do I contact about this?
I get my SSI the 3rd Wednesday of each month, is that why I was looked over?
Anytime extra money was given out, I never got it. Where’s the fairness in that?

    • Geri B.

After doing some research i found that only people who have been collecting ssi since before 1997 who get their checks on the 1st of each month will get their december payment on the 1st and their January payment on dec 30 because the first is a holiday. Apparently after 1997 they started paying ssi on different weeks according to their last name instead of paying everyone on the first. Hope this helps. I get my ssi on the 4th week so my next payment wont be till the 4th Wednesday in January.

      • Vandorn M.

I haven’t never got a second payment never what I’m I missing I got bills and all and bill are getting higher

    • Darius G.

I was told that ssi received 2 payment in December all I received is one in December on the 21

  3. Cindy M.

My social security was due to be paid dec 28 but I didn’t get it and the website shows last payment in November and next payment in January. They skipped my dec payment.

    • Cindy M.

I’ve been on hold over an hour now waiting to talk with someone.

      • Cindy M.

Talked to someone and she said if I don’t receive it by tomorrow to call back. I hope I don’t have to wait another hour to talk to someone tomorrow.

        • Larry m.

When do I get my check?

          • Ann C.

Hi, Larry. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. Thanks.

    • Crystal

  4. Kathy J.

I get SSI will I get paid on Dec 30th due to New Years? I usually can see it pending in my bank account but it’s not showing

  5. Richard

Ssi is sent out to bank a day ahead considering bank is closed early new year Eve and new years day mist people will received on December 30th

    • Kay

It means we get 2 ssi checks in dec. and NONE in Jan 2023

  6. Denise H.

In my “my social security” account it states the SSI check will be deposited Dec. 29th 2022 and the SS deposited Jan. 2nd. 2023. Why would it be different than the printed calendar?

  7. Mariann

Will we get a notice telling us what we will be getting like we used to get ?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Mariann. It sounds like you are referring to the Cost of Living Adjustment notice. Social Security and SSI beneficiaries are normally notified by mail starting in early December about their new benefit amount. The fastest way to find out your new benefit amount is to access your personal my Social Security account to view the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) notice online. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

  8. Timothy H.

I get SSDI on the 3rd will I get paid on the 30th of December

    • Tammy

I would assume not because the 3rd lands on a weekday.
If it were to land on a weekend or a holiday then you would get it the Friday before.
This is why those who usually receive payment on the 1st are getting it Friday…because the 1st lands on a Sunday.

    • Jen

I also get paid on the 3rd. I too thought we’d get paid the 30th so I called Direct Express, it shows my ” pending” deposit and says ” will be available January 3rd at midnight 🥺

      • Amber

Did u ever get ur money on ur Direct Express Card, i still havent received mine so im gonna call them today.

    • Ann C.

      • Angela B.

My mother also got this but her deposit day is the third week of the month so why would she recieve this too?

      • Amber

I was suppose to receive my Jan. ssi payment on my Direct Express card on Dec.30th but never did & i checked this morning & its still not on there. Also when i call my Direct Express card it usually gives me a pending deposit & its not doing that eitheir. So whats goin on & what should i do?

      • Torrie

Please give us answers on why lots of us that get Direct deposit for SSI still have yet to get January 2023. Please tell us something. I’m definitely not the only one.

        • Amber

Did you receive your money today, i calles my card & its still not on there so im deff gonna be calling here in a few & hopefully i can get some answers cuz this is ridiculous cuz we all need our money to pay our bills

        • Ann C.

Hi, Torrie. If you do not receive your electronic payment on the scheduled pay date, please contact your bank or financial institution first. If you still need to report a late, missing, or stolen Social Security payment, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions. We hope this helps.

    • Bo L.

The payment has to be issued today because it can’t be issued on a weekend or holiday. The last time this scenario happened my deposit showed up Saturday morning. The 3rd is not a holiday but it has to be initiated at least one business day prior.

      • Brianna

I get my payment on the first , and saw we get it today but I don’t see anything in my bank account

  9. William B.

So I Receive a payment on the 3rd of each month does that mean I get paid on the 30th of December for January payment ?

    • Tammy

I would assume not because the 3rd lands on a weekday.
If it were to land on a weekend or a holiday then you would get it the Friday before.
This is why those who usually receive payment on the 1st are getting it Friday…because the 1st lands on a Sunday.

      • Alice D.

I get mine on the 3rd also. It goes in on the 2nd. This year the 2nd the banks are closed since the 1st is on a Sunday. I’m hoping mine will be deposited on the 30th.

  10. TR B.

On the December 30 SSI payment, can banks hold those payments until after January 1? This has been an issue with my bank in previous years.
