woman in a wheelchair going down a sidewalkFor most months in the year, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients get their SSI payment on the first day of the month. But when the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month. That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.

We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.

Below is an example of how this will work in January 2023. January 1, 2023 is the Federal holiday of New Year’s Day (it also happens to be a Sunday), so we will not issue your payment on January 1. Since December 31 is a Saturday—and we don’t issue a payment on a weekend—we will issue your SSI payment for the month of January on December 30, 2022. In this example, you get two SSI payments in December.

Example chart of two SSI payments in the same month

The first December payment, on December 1, is your regularly scheduled payment for December. The second December payment, on December 30, 2022, is your SSI payment for the month of January. You will not get an SSI payment in January because you received it in December.

On our website, we provide a Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for the current and upcoming calendar year.

Securing today and tomorrow starts with being informed. Please share this information with your friends and family—and post it on social media.

I work in 2021and 2022….I’ve been looking for a Pay raise on my Social Security check..if you told the two years that is almost sixteen thousand dollars..So why is it that I haven’t received a raise on Social Security yet…

    • Ann C.

Hi, Josephine. Thanks for visiting our blog. Each year, we review the records for all working Social Security recipients to see if additional earnings may increase their monthly benefits. If your earnings for the prior year are higher than one of the years we used to figure your retirement benefit, we will recalculate your benefit amount. If an increase is due, a new monthly benefit amount is established on your record automatically. If you continue to work, remember that starting with the month you reach full retirement age, there is no limit on how much you can earn and still receive your Social Security benefits. For more information, please visit our Receiving Benefits While Working page. We hope this information helps.

Since I had worked part time in with this company for almost 2 years they of course lowered my SSI payment 250.$ but on December 7th they sent me that same amount of hat they “Deducted on the first. I know that they had said that it was going to be raised from 841.00 to 914.00 besides the 87.00 that is also added to the SSI payment on behalf of the state which also will be raised from 87.00 to another higher amount. Since I work part time I know they had told me that my SSI payment wasn’t going to get higher that 900.00 what they don’t know is that the state only gave me 18 dollars besides the 841.00 while they always have everyone else 87 dollars from the state they raised mine up to 21 dollars while everyone was still higher than me 841 SSI and 87. dollars from the state making it 928 every month while mine was 865 it made no sense to me I’m medically in chronic needs. Anyway besides the “914.00” how much is it with what the state of NY in 2022 it was 87. Dollars a month how much will it be buy 2023 besides the 914?
