Getting Two SSI Payments in One Month

woman in a wheelchair going down a sidewalkFor most months in the year, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients get their SSI payment on the first day of the month. But when the first day of the month falls on the weekend or a Federal holiday, you receive your SSI payment on the last business day before the first day of the month. That means you may get two SSI payments in the same month.

We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment. It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.

Below is an example of how this will work in January 2023. January 1, 2023 is the Federal holiday of New Year’s Day (it also happens to be a Sunday), so we will not issue your payment on January 1. Since December 31 is a Saturday—and we don’t issue a payment on a weekend—we will issue your SSI payment for the month of January on December 30, 2022. In this example, you get two SSI payments in December.

Example chart of two SSI payments in the same month

The first December payment, on December 1, is your regularly scheduled payment for December. The second December payment, on December 30, 2022, is your SSI payment for the month of January. You will not get an SSI payment in January because you received it in December.

On our website, we provide a Schedule of Social Security Benefit Payments for the current and upcoming calendar year.

Securing today and tomorrow starts with being informed. Please share this information with your friends and family—and post it on social media.

I received 2 checks in November. Check your bank. My only issue is that it states on my acct that my dec check was with the new increase but loop hole if the check is sent in November, even if it’s the Dec check it is not with the increase because increase starts for Dec payments but will begin on January. That also doesn’t make sense. raja88 slot

I’m very confused I also get my check the 3rd Wednesday of the month , will we get that 2nd check ?

        • Ken

Since Jan 2nd is a legal holiday the Fed will release funds Friday so you should get your funds no later then Saturday. Feds don’t rlease funds on Holidays or Saturday Sunday

        • Richard M.

The only reason for 2 checks is because jan1 recipients falls on a holiday/weekend in which case you receive it on a workday before said holiday/weekend
Hence the reason for 2 checks for dec , the 2 check is actually for January everyone else will have to wait til January 3 or whatever Wednesday your birthday your birthday falls on

That’s a cheap way of ripping off some senior citizens for a whole month you’re not even going to give us a total amount for January can we sue you for that in a class action lawsuit just might get it done you’re shorting everybody by 200 or so dollars that you people were supposed to give on an upgrade so you’ve taken money from us and not giving us those hundred dollars a month that you’re supposed to be paying us but you’re stealing it and putting it in your pockets wait till the news people get a hold of this

I have uncontrollable seizures and want to know if I’m on disability can I apply for a medical Marijuana card and keep my benefits sine the 9 meds they have me on don’t help

    • Eleanor

I am disabled and on Social Security and Medicare. I have a medical marijuana card, for PTSD. That is one of the acceptable diagnoses required for the card. I actually have PTSD so it works. It is expensive, for the card, visits every 6 months that cost $150. Then you have to renew it every year with the state. And the products are very expensive. But I think that it is worth it.
