Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement
Reading Time: 2 MinutesLast Updated: November 3, 2023
Tax season is approaching, and we have made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.
If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.
If you already have a personal my Social Security account, you can log in to your account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a personal my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
If you’re a non-citizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to:
- Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia).
- Get your benefit verification letter.
- Check your benefit and payment information.
- Change your address and phone number.
- Change your direct deposit information.
- Request a replacement Medicare card.
- Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or SSI benefits.

I have questions on two issues I thought I knew the answers to but now I’m not so sure.
#!: If I am receiving SS benefits as of my full retirement age
and have no reported income since but now have a good income When I pay my 2020 taxes will my SS benefits be adjusted to reflect my increased income ? Would my lowest income be dropped?
#2: If / when I or my spouse dies does the surviving spouse receive a survivor’s benefit based on the deceased spouses SS benefits? If so what percent?
V.V.
Hi Charles, thanks for your questions. Generally, if you continue to work while receiving retirement benefits, your monthly benefit amount may increase. As long as you continue to work and receive benefits, we will check your record automatically every year to see whether the additional earnings will increase your monthly benefit. If there is an increase, we will send you a letter telling you of your new benefit amount.
For details regarding survivor benefits, check out our Survivors Benefit Planner.

I am retired and receive monthly SS benefits. I wish to have federal income taxes withheld from my monthly check. How is the best way to do this?
V.V.
Thank you for your question, Patricia. To sign up for Voluntary Tax Withholding, please fill out Form W-4V. When you complete the form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 12, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld for taxes. I have not received my stimulus check from the IRS and or social security administration as am residing overseas. subsequent monthly benefit that I have received since the stimulus benefit was passed has not been received on my monthly payment. Upon calling IRS in Pennsylvania, I was informed that SSA has not sent my 1099 form to their office. Would the SSA kindly sent the form to IRS so that the check can be sent to SSA for forwarding to me in my next check

My friend is 95 and does not have access to a computer. I have tried to set up an account for her on my computer but SS will not accept it. She did not get her benefits awards letter and needs a copy to get reimbursement from her husbands place of employment. How can I get a copy for her? SS offices are closed and she is hard of hearing and cannot talk to them on the phone. They will not talk to me even though she is sitting next to me giving them permission.
K.O.
Hi Tina, thanks for using our blog. Our current policy does not allow people to set up a my Social Security account for others. Your friend may be able to request a replacement benefit verification letter. She can obtain this letter online instantly by using her personal my Social Security account.
Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on her behalf unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with her does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If she does not have a representative payee, and she’s not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage. You can also call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to request an appointment. We hope this helps.

I will receive my first SS retirement payment in mid October 2020 for the benefit earned in September. Because the payment is made in the following month, it raises a question regarding the amount of SS income that will be reported for 2020 on form 1099-SSA. Does form 1099-SSA report SS income when earned or when paid? Specifically for my case, will it report 4 months of earned benefits (Sep., Oct., Nov., Dec.) or 3 months of payments (Oct., Nov., Dec.)?
V.V.
Hi Paul, thanks for using our blog. The SSA-1099 (Social Security Benefit Statement) shows the amount of benefits received in the prior calendar year. A worksheet (IRS Notice 703) is included for determining whether any portion of the Social Security benefits received are subject to income tax. We hope this is helpful!
