Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

    Like many here, I have received an incorrect 1099 in the mail. In my case my Net benefits shown are MUCH lower than what I actually received.

    I believe I just figured out what may have happened.

    I received SS Benefits for a FULL year, but my husband only received benefits for 4 months, as he collected LATER in the year than I did.

    Since married couples are somehow linked together in the system by default in case of future needs
    . ( surviver, divorce etc) something has gone awry here.
    My benefits only reflect 4 MONTHS payment. JUST LIKE MY HUSBAND whose 1099 is correct for him!
    I will add that I checked my account online and it was CORRECT THERE.

    Problem is WHAT INFO WENT TO THE IRS?

    Hope I was clear, if anyone else has this situation see if that helps getting it resolved.

    Any OFFICIAL reading this please advise SSA that this may be a cause for a bug in this system and alert representatives. PLEASE.

    My former employer, from whom I receive monthly benefits is requesting a copy of “Your New Benefit amount form for 2021”. I have never received this.

    My son recently applied for SSDI (after receiving SSI for the last 5 years). He is in the ticket to work program.He’s been approved for SSDI. I have 3 questions that I can’t find the answers for…

    1) Do I still report his monthly earnings to SS?

    2) What is the dollar limit per month that he can earn, before being penalized.

    3. Is there a cap on the amount of money he keeps in his bank account?

      Hi Janet, thank you for your question. Social Security has special rules that make it possible for people with disabilities receiving Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to work and still receive monthly payments. These are called work incentives.

      For SSDI beneficiaries, there is a Trial Work Period (TWP) and then an Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). The TWP allows you to test your ability to work for at least 9 months. During this period, you will receive your full disability benefit regardless of how much you earn as long as your work activity is reported and you continue to have a disabling impairment. In 2021, any month in which earnings exceed $940 is considered a month of the 9-month trial work period.

      Once you’ve completed your TWP, you get a 36-month safety net called the EPE. During the EPE, you get benefits for all months your earnings or work activities are below the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) level as long as you continue to have a disabling impairment. Social Security will suspend cash benefits for months earnings are over SGA and start benefits again if earnings fall below the SGA level. In 2021, you are earning SGA if your earnings, after any allowable deductions, are more than $1,310 in a month.

      If your son is only receiving SSDI, it does not matter how much money your son has in his bank account. However, if he’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, the amount of resources can affect his benefits. This is because the amount of an SSI benefit is based, in part, on the income and resources available to the individual receiving SSI benefits and the income and resources of his or her spouse.

      If you are the representative payee for your son, you can conduct business for him in your my Social Security account. The Representative Payee Portal is a central portal where you can conduct your own Social Security business or manage direct deposit, wage reporting, and annual reporting for those that you are payee for.
