I am trying to set up My SSA acct. for my Mother in law while in her presence. I am unable to do this since she is drawing SS benefits on her deceased husband’s account. She is 98 yrs & 9 months & is hearing & sight impaired & has no way to communicate via computer.
Is there any way to accomplish this?
V.V.
Hi Belinda, thanks for using our blog. You can only create an account using your own personal information and for your own exclusive use. You cannot create an account on behalf of another person or using another person’s information or identity, even if you have that person’s written permission.
Because of privacy and security concerns, you will not be able to conduct Social Security business on behalf of your mother-in-law unless you are her representative payee. Having a power of attorney, being an authorized representative, or having a joint bank account with your mother-in-law does not authorize you to access information on her Social Security record. If she does not have a representative payee and she’s not capable of managing and directing her Social Security benefits, someone should consider applying to be her payee. To learn more about becoming a representative payee, you can read our publication, “A Guide for Representative Payees” or visit our Representative Payee webpage.
To apply to be your mother-in-law’s representative payee, you can call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance or you can contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator. The number may appear under Show Additional Office Information. Please be aware that our call wait times are longer than normal. We hope this information helps.

If I claim my retirement SS benefit in June my first payment will be in July. (SS pays 1 month in arrears) . Will my SSA-1099 reflect the 6 payments actually made in the year OR 7 months of the claim.
