Get Your Social Security Benefit Statement (SSA-1099)

Tax season is approaching, and Social Security has made replacing your annual Benefit Statement even easier. The Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. Now you can get a copy of your 1099 anytime and anywhere you want using our online services.

A Social Security 1099 is a tax form Social Security mails each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from Social Security in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and request an instant, printable replacement form through your personal my Social Security account.

A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1.

If you already have a my Social Security account, you can log in to your online account to view and print your SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document on your computer or laptop or even email it. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your my Social Security account is also the best way to:

  • Get your benefit verification letter;
  • Check your benefit and payment information;
  • Change your address and phone number;
  • Change your direct deposit information;
  • Request a replacement Medicare card; or
  • Report your wages if you work and receive Social Security disability insurance or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

If you’re a noncitizen who lives outside of the United States and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will send you form SSA-1042S in the mail. The forms SSA-1099 and SSA-1042S are not available for people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

      Hi Christopher, thank you for using our blog. The Department of the Treasury will provide information about economic impact payments under the recently enacted law, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act.

      Treasury, not Social Security, will be making direct payments to eligible people. Please do not contact Social Security about these payments as the agency does not have information to share. Instead, for the latest information, please visit http://www.irs.gov/coronavirus . We hope this is helpful.

    Tried to set up online access and received this message:
    “We have suspended electronic access to your personal information.”
    Followed prompts to phone number with instructions to say “Help Desk.” Call was disconnected.
    Clicked “Request a Call Back” and received this message:
    “Call Back is currently unavailable.”
    Clicked “Visit Us.” Local office is closed. The site suggested that I set up online access.
    The whole process is broken.

      Hi Mary Jane. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions web page on how to obtain a replacement 1099. Each of you may also be able to request replacement SSA-1099’s by using our automated telephone service at 1-800-772-1213. You can conduct the automated services 24 hours a day. At the prompt, indicate that you’re requesting a replacement SSA-1099. We hope this helps.

      Hi Sandra, thank you for your question. The best way to check and maintain your benefits is in your my Social Security account. If you do not already have an account, you can create one. Once you are logged in to your account, select the “Benefit and Payment Details” tab. You can view and print your monthly payment amount, your payment schedule, benefit deductions and your next payment date.

      For assistance with your account and to request a replacement SSA-1099, you may:
      •Call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the voice prompt, say “helpdesk”; or
      •Contact your local Social Security office. Please look for the general inquiry telephone number at the Social Security Office Locator.

    I am the court-appointed executor of the estate of a person who died during 2019. I did not receive a 2019 Form SSA-1099 in the mail. How can I obtain one by mail? Given the COVID-19 situation I do not wan to go to a local Social Security office.

      We are sorry to hear about your loss, Robert. The SSA-1099 is mailed to the last address in our records and is intended for the spouse or executor of the deceased. If you did not receive the benefit statement, the executor will need to go into the local Social Security office with proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our offices are closed until further notice. Unfortunately, you may need to wait for the offices to reopen.     Marvin Ledkins SS#*** – ** – *** died on Feb.12 of 2020. My question is he never received his check for Jan of 2020 plus part of Feb. I was told it would be divided up among his children but no one received any money. What happened to his money.

      Hi, Karen. We are sorry to hear about your loss. To be eligible for a Social Security benefit payment, a person has to live throughout the entire month. Social Security benefits are paid the month after they are due; therefore, no benefits were due for February. However, based on the date of death, your ex-spouse may have been due the January payment but if his death occurred before the payment date, his benefits may be returned. We may pay amounts due a deceased beneficiary to a family member or legal representative of the estate. See “Claim For Amounts Due In The Case Of Deceased Beneficiary” for more information. In some instances, the financial institution will automatically return payments upon notification of the beneficiary’s death. Also, only eligible family members may be able to receive monthly survivor benefits.
