An older couple reviewing a social security benefit statement

Tax season is here, and we’ve made replacing your annual Benefit Statement easier. There’s no need to wait on the phone or make an appointment to visit a Social Security office.

The Social Security Benefit Statement is also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S. It is a tax form we mail to you every January if you receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received in the previous year, so you know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on your tax return.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments aren’t taxed. If SSI is the only payment you receive from us, we won’t send you a Benefit Statement.

If you misplace your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S or you didn’t receive the form in January, you can get a replacement online by signing in to your personal my Social Security account.

Select the “Replace Your Tax Form SSA-1099/SSA-1042S” link. Go to the “Choose a year” dropdown menu. Choose from any of the past 6 years for which benefits were paid and select the “Download” link.

A replacement for the most recent tax year will be available beginning February 1.

You can instantly view and print your SSA-1099/SSA-1042S. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save each document on your computer or laptop or email it.

You can easily create a personal my Social Security account if you don’t have one.

If you’re a noncitizen and you received or repaid Social Security benefits last year, we will mail you form SSA-1042S. If you live outside the U.S. and need a replacement form, you can create your personal my Social Security account with an ID.me credential. If you cannot create an account and you live abroad, please contact your Federal Benefits Unit to request your SSA-1042S.

If you do not have access to the internet or cannot create an account, you have the option to use our automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099/SSA-1042S (if you live in the U.S.) The form is available after January 31. Our automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. When you hear “How can I help you today?” say “1099″.

If a beneficiary died before the end of last year or before they received their SSA-1099, we will mail the form to the last address on their record. The form is used to file any final tax return, if necessary.

My wife received Social Security benefits in 2024 but never received a SSA1099, and one is not posted on her personal on-line Social Security account. We’ve checked her account repeatedly, as recent as today. I know what her monthly benefit is so can I just multiply that by 12 and include that dollar amount in our return?

The HELP line is a crock! The first time I called I was waiting for 4 1/2 hours. Today it’s 6 hours so far. My wife died in December 2024 and her online account was “suspended” so I cn’t get it there either.

My mother passed away in June 2024. She was never mailed the 1099-SSA form, either to her old address (which I still have access to) or to my address as the beneficiary. After several calls and waiting on hold for hours on the main line, I was told that a replacement would be mailed to my address and that it would take 10 days. That was 22 days ago. Because walk-ins are no longer allowed at SSA offices, what are my choices to resolve this matter? Just never file a tax return for 2024 because the SSA simply failed to send a document (twice) that they’re legally obligated to send? Wait on hold for hours again to request a replacement that I’m sure will never arrive (even if reassured once again on the phone)?

Hi, ES. We’re sorry to hear of your loss. Since you did not receive the benefit statement, you will need to make an appointment with your local Social Security office to show proof of death and proof of executorship. An SSA-1099 can also be given to someone receiving benefits on the deceased beneficiary’s record such as a spouse, parent, or child of the deceased. For more information, you can call our toll-free number at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask a representative for assistance. Wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month. We hope this helps.

The automated service doesn’t work for people calling on behalf of deceased individuals. I was on hold for over an hour and not even once I was offered a call back service. I couldn’t wait any longer so I had to disconnect. I have to try all over again tomorrow. This is such a blatant disregard for people’s time.

Whenever I am told that SSA is sending a code to my phone, (had the same phone number for the past 12 years, and previously receive codes sent until about 2 years ago. Still receive codes sent by other organizations except the SSA), I promise myself not to hold my breath. The last four digits of my phone number are correctly listed but the remaining numbers are hidden. I must confess this issue started when I forgot my password and apparently responded incorrectly to one of three password recovery questions. Help!

I am trying to help my mother, an AMERICAN CITIZEN living overseas, get her 1099 since Id.me is not working for her and no answer through 800 number (1-800-772-1213). I have been on hold 1 h45m. The local foreign SSA office seems to have closed.
PLEASE ADVISE as she cannot get access to her 1099 in order to review her taxes.
