Correcting the Record about Social Security Office Closings
Reading Time: 1 MinuteLast Updated: March 27, 2025
Recent reports in the media that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is permanently closing local field offices are false. Since January 1, 2025, the agency has not permanently closed or announced the permanent closure of any local field office. From time to time, SSA must temporarily close a local field office for reasons such as weather, damage, or facilities issues, and it reopens when the issues are resolved. The agency has announced the permanent closure of one hearing office, in White Plains, NY.
SSA works closely with local congressional delegations before closing any office permanently. The agency also reassigns employees from an affected office to other locations to help communities access in-person services.
“SSA is committed to providing service where people need help and our local field offices are no exception,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “We have not permanently closed any local field offices this year.”
SSA identified for the General Services Administration underutilized office space to ensure the government is spending taxpayer money as prudently as possible. The agency provided GSA a list of sites for termination. Most of these are small hearing rooms with no assigned employees. Since most hearings are held virtually, SSA no longer needs these underutilized rooms.

From my experience with the Social Security Office on Austin Peay in Memphis, TN. They should be closed. They do not help at all! A lady was yelling for a supervisor and I should have got in her line. The person that I went to was rude, told me to find what I needed in my papers from SS. Stated she does not look at paperwork, after I had my papers in folders and in order for her to assist me. It was the worst customer service I have ever seen. They tell you that you have to go into office for that and then I went in and she tells me to find it out myself. Waist of our money!!!!

Why is callback service closed? How can I apply for spousal social security benefits if an appointment is required to be made and going to an office for this service is not an option? Where do I go from here?
Laura
I got spousal SS and did it online. Never had to go to office

How do you explain a written request to avoid ssa offices and accomplish your business online?

If field offices are not closing, then how do you explain all the furniture we just received from one of them? Why would you give everything away to other agencies if the offices were just closing temporarily?

While this news is reassuring, it is at odds with what is being reported by multiple respected news outlets whose record of accuracy is excellent. They include the AP, Reuters and others, who say that under DOGE substantial closings are in the offing. They are also reporting that thousands of Social Security staff are being laid off, which will make it more difficult for the SSA to deliver the services it is expected to do under the law. We the People are left with a “Charade” type of situation, trying to determine who exactly is delivering false news and who is being truthful, the Administration or the free press, both of which are charged with serving the People.

What about staffing? Not closing offices does not inform the public as to whether or not you’re cutting staff and decreasing responsiveness to the public’s needs.

You guys are outright lying. My field office in Grand Junction, CO is closing in July 2025 directly as a result of musk and his cuts. Disgusting the way you manipulate the language. “We haven’t closed any offices since the beginning of the year, we are just going to close a large number of then over the next several months. What an absolute abuse of your integrity

One of the field offices closed near me and my agency acquired a bunch of furniture from it. I don’t think the word “transparency” means what they think it means.

they might be smart in one way but they’re not smart and other ways that they should be they need to get Eli must the hell out of the office just because he put money into Trump for everybody to vote for him don’t mean to keep him in office cuz he’s dumb in a lot of ways he knows nothing about the job that’s being done and he’s ruining people’s lives he don’t like people that are not rich and he’s trying to make it to where the poor people are even worse off than they already are they need to get him out of office I don’t care if he’s a friend of Trump’s or not he’s grilling Trump up a big time his own people are turning against him because he’s letting this guy do what he wants to do that Eli must say nothing but a jackass and you can’t believe anything that they tell you that comes out of that office no more because one day they say something the next day it changes all because Eli muscle Trump butt buddies

It is not true that there will be no Social Security offices closed this year. 47 Social Security Administration offices are listed for closure, some had anticipated dates for when those lease cancellations would take effect. Tremination dates are listed for 26 offices, starting mid-year. It is also a fact that some beneficiaries may have to go into offices to prove their ID because fraudsters call on the phone trying to divert payments into their accounts. It is not clear at this time what ID questions will be asked over the phone vs a face to face interview. Plans are being worked on to minimize the impact on senior and disabled citizens.

Thank you for setting the record straight…huh?
What record? How rabidly gullible? Do any of
you lapping this up believe for one second that they would confirm that here. Just because it is on the official SSA website doesn’t mean it is gospel. Then again if you are convinced already then I suppose it is just a matter of time. You have nothing to lose – in time we will all see. Just remember to come back to this thread see how it ages. Good luck.
