Recent reports in the media that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is permanently closing local field offices are false. Since January 1, 2025, the agency has not permanently closed or announced the permanent closure of any local field office. From time to time, SSA must temporarily close a local field office for reasons such as weather, damage, or facilities issues, and it reopens when the issues are resolved. The agency has announced the permanent closure of one hearing office, in White Plains, NY.

SSA works closely with local congressional delegations before closing any office permanently. The agency also reassigns employees from an affected office to other locations to help communities access in-person services.

“SSA is committed to providing service where people need help and our local field offices are no exception,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “We have not permanently closed any local field offices this year.”

SSA identified for the General Services Administration underutilized office space to ensure the government is spending taxpayer money as prudently as possible. The agency provided GSA a list of sites for termination. Most of these are small hearing rooms with no assigned employees. Since most hearings are held virtually, SSA no longer needs these underutilized rooms.

Thank you for quelling the fears of many seniors in smaller towns of America. The previous announcement of online enrollment requirements was enough to shake the minds of the elderly.

Quoting “most …offices are hearing offices with little or no staff assigned. “ would have been helpful,if a,list of the actual offices so readers could see if the actuality is accurate to the statement. If the list is too long for the blog – which would be suspicious if the number is that numerous) then at least a link to,a site where the list could be read and reviewed.

Thank you for clarifying, but what about those folks who do not have the capacity to have a teleconference? As in, no computer and/or no wi-fi? I have elderly friends who don’t use computers, and I’m sure some of my neighbors may not have the means to purchase a computer.

The GSA list of cancelled leases shows the SSA OFFICE at Grand Junction Colorado CLOSING June 21st!
It is not a hearing room. It is a SSA office staffed by several employees!! I intend to notify my Senator Michael Bennet if the erroneous information in this notice!
Keep the Grand Junction office OPEN!

I just spoke with my sister, who lives in Grand Junction, CO. She said that the SS office in GJ, CO has been closed. She has not yet retired, and has all of the capabilities to apply online. However, many others do not have a computer, WiFi or the understanding to complete the SS forms.

I am currently receiving Social Security Retirement Benefits. Do I need to act now to provide identity verification information and if I do what is required and how do I do that?

You MUST have an online .gov id and the ability to check it. Do that NOW because you will have to go in person to prove your identity starting 3/31/2025. Online over the weekend!

Hi, Joanne. Thanks for using our blog. There is no need to contact Social Security to prove your identity if you’re not applying for cash benefits and if you’re not changing your direct deposit information. You will continue to receive your benefits on schedule to the bank account information in Social Security’s records without needing to prove your identity. We hope this helps.
