Recent reports in the media that the Social Security Administration (SSA) is permanently closing local field offices are false. Since January 1, 2025, the agency has not permanently closed or announced the permanent closure of any local field office. From time to time, SSA must temporarily close a local field office for reasons such as weather, damage, or facilities issues, and it reopens when the issues are resolved. The agency has announced the permanent closure of one hearing office, in White Plains, NY.

SSA works closely with local congressional delegations before closing any office permanently. The agency also reassigns employees from an affected office to other locations to help communities access in-person services.

“SSA is committed to providing service where people need help and our local field offices are no exception,” said Lee Dudek, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. “We have not permanently closed any local field offices this year.”

SSA identified for the General Services Administration underutilized office space to ensure the government is spending taxpayer money as prudently as possible. The agency provided GSA a list of sites for termination. Most of these are small hearing rooms with no assigned employees. Since most hearings are held virtually, SSA no longer needs these underutilized rooms.

I find it shocking that we are running the place by a blog and social media platform on a daily basis.

Please stop blaming the media when it was DOGE that announced the offices to be closed. I hope I can trust this report now. Please stop messing with Americans’ lifeline!!!

Hi! My mother passed away last month and my sisters and I have been taking turns calling 1-800-772-1213 to try and notify you of my mom’s death. She donated her body to science, so there is no funeral home to help us with SSA. We have each waited on hold over 2hrs each time we called, and none of us have been able to get through. I waited for almost three hours on one occasion and finally hung up. I looked to see how I could make an appointment with our local SS office, but I have to call the same number to make an appointment. Is there another way to notify SSA of a loved one’s passing? We did close her bank account so your payments can’t go through. We don’t know what else to do. Can we mail you her death certificate?

The medical examiner in your city can probably notify them or have the organization that received her body do it for you.
I spent a lot of time on the phone with no luck and finally went to their office and waited over 2 hours to talk to someone. Hopefully these problems will be solved soon.
Give the new administration a chance, they are trying to improve the problems we’ve had for years.

I don’t believe any statements coming from SSA. You spin the horrible news into hogwash.

      I agree!
Nothing but chaos and lies from the
      trump/musk regime.
They want us to stay scared and always be begging for help.

Why is permanent brain damage caused by 5 srokes listed as eligible for benefits but Judge Lablanc of Baltimore, MD is saying it’s not?

Wait, what? You aren’t closing field offices, except that you are closing some offices? This blog is crazy making. You’d be better off being silent unless it’s a post that is about helping your clients get the help they need.

There should be legal repercussions for these news agencies that spread false information to promote their narrative. I’ve had enough of this fear mongering.

I agree. However, my family has been calling 1-800-772-1213 to try and notify SSA of my mom’s death and none of us have not been able to get through. It does seem like staffing is a major issue as I waited on hold for nearly three hours and finally hung up. My sister wasn’t even put on hold – the wait time was over 120min and she was disconnected.

Mallory, I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom. That hurts for sure. What I found is that if I call very early in the morning, I can get through. If I call later in the day, it seems like that 120 minute wait. I know that is not helpful while you are going through grief and loss but hopefully it might be worth a try to call super early.

This blog says they are NOT closing field offices, then goes on to say how they’ve submitted a list of offices that they are closing. Some may be understaffed hearing offices but they didn’t say that ALL of them were. Sounds like maybe the bias is coming from inside the house.

The news source is Musk/Trump?Doge, not the media.
Pay attention – their intent is to destroy the SS System, which Musk called a Ponsi Scheme
