Stretch the DayIt’s the summer solstice, longest day of the year. You have more time to accomplish all the things on your to-do list. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same for the days to follow.

With busy schedules and constant multi-tasking, it seems like everyone is juggling the multiple chores and obligations of everyday life. That’s why Social Security created a suite of online services.

The best way to accomplish your business with Social Security online is by creating a personal my Social Security account. Easy, convenient and secure, a personal my Social Security account gives you immediate access to your individual Social Security information. During your working years, you can use your personal my Social Security account to view your Social Security Statement to check your earnings record. Are you already receiving benefits? You can use my Social Security to get a proof of benefits letter, change your address or phone number on our records, start or change your direct deposit, and check your benefit and payment information.

In addition to using my Social Security, you can use the Retirement Estimator to plug in different numbers, retirement dates, and scenarios to help you decide the best time for you to retire. In addition, when that time comes, you can apply for retirement benefits online. It can take as little as 15 minutes from start to finish. In most cases, once you submit your electronic application, that’s it, you’re done—no papers to sign or documents to submit.

From getting the skinny on how to get a replacement Social Security card to an online application for disability benefits, using Social Security online services allows you time for other things. Now you can use the extra hours to go grab some ice cream and enjoy the beautiful summer sunset.

The website has said – Your Benefit Applications – We’re sorry, we cannot provide your Benefit Application Status at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience. Please try again later. – since the day we went into the office and applied for them. (last 60 days)

I have tried to create a My Social Security account, but due to SSA reliance on Verifying via Experian I am unable to create an account Online, I contacted the help
desk which was useless since they could only tell me to visit a SSA office. My problem is I am living Thailand and the American embassy here does not have a Social security office. SSA Online site should have more than
just one means to verify an individual since Credit bureaus are the ones getting hacked.

After learning of the Equifax breach I tried to open a My Social Security account so I could monitor activity. I am not yet old enough to receive benefits. I was twice (and I gather permanently) locked out after I correctly answered “None of the above” to a total of ten questions. Not one of the items referred to in the questions had any relevance to me. They concerned mortgages, car loans, credit cards, addresses that had nothing to do with me ever in my life. I discovered that MANY people have had the same problem with these questions—they are bogus. I now must go to an office in person. Would you please tell me what documents will be required? Thank you.

    • Ray F.

Hello Patrice, if you are having difficulties creating your personal my Social Security account, we suggest you call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. After you hear “Briefly tell me why you are calling,” say “Help Desk” for help with a my Social Security account. Our representatives will let you know if you are required to visit your local Social Security office for further assistance. We hope this helps!

      • Patrice

Thank you, Ray. It seems I am now required to go in person. I was also told I could not make an appointment but could only be a walk-in. I checked my Equifax profile from which these questions were supposedly drawn. There is nothing in the report (or those of the other two credit reporting agencies) remotely related to these questions and my answers were therefore correct. I urge SS to look into this widespread problem of bad security questions erroneously locking people out. Thank you.

    How can I change address

    • Jenna Y.

Hello Giovanni. If you are receiving Social Security benefits, you can create a my Social Security account to change your address online. If you are receiving Supplemental Security Income, you must report the new address to your local Social Security office. If you are not yet receiving benefits, you don’t need to change your address with us at this time. Thanks!

I’m sorry but all of the info about it being easy to sign up for retirement online being easy is a bunch of bull! I can’t even get past filling out the sign-up information for the “My Social Security” account! I have checked and double checked the info I typed into the spaces and it IS all correct. (even though I am told it is not) I have lived at the same house for over 35 years so, this is very frustrating for me. This is making me dread the process of actually signing up for retirement online-which I’d much rather do than sit on the phone all day being transferred around from one person to another. Why does applying for any kind of benefits with the government always seem so hard? It took my husband and I a week last year to get me signed-up for Medicaid-which is nuts!

    • Ray F.

Hi Roberta, we are sorry to hear you are having trouble applying online. The site appears to be up and running, please try again. Call 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Representatives can assist you with your application online. They can also help you schedule an appointment with your local Social Security office. An appointment is not required, but if you call ahead and schedule one, it may reduce the time you spend waiting, and it establishes a protective filing date that protects your future benefits. Generally, it’s best if you call later in the day or later in the week.
