Social Security Administration LogoWe want to give you an update on our preparations for returning our employees to local Social Security offices, a process called reentry.

You may have seen a proposed reentry date of January 3, 2022 in the draft reentry plan that we provided to our unions, or in the media. While some executives reentered on December 1, we have not set a reentry date for the rest of the agency.

The best way to reach us is online at SSA.gov, or by calling our National 800 Number or a local Social Security office. At this time, please remember that we can only provide in-person service by appointment only for limited, critical issues. And we continue to hold voluntary hearings by online video and phone. We are taking steps to increase in-person help for people unable to complete their business online or by phone.

We will keep you updated on our reentry process.

I understand that it’s just common knowledge the social security office is slow, infuriating, and you only hire one person per million customers, but did you guys have to make the website just as terrible? I can’t log in, I’ve tried Login.gov, ID.me, and made a dozen new accounts and NOT A SINGLE ONE can log in, I just keep getting sent back to the Terms of Services page.

I applied back in August, and have not been able to use this damn website even one single time.

so sick of getting the runaround about where my ORIGINAL marriage license and drivers license are. no one seems to know where my documents are. i keep getting told that im going to get a call back and no one calls me back. i just want my stuff back. it has been over a month. this is ridiculous

Hello, I was shorted on my SS check and thought I was getting a raise starting this month?

    • Ja C.

I personally thought the government had screwed up….we are supposed to be getting the checks one month behind meaning January’s check would not come until February and that would mean the cost of living wouldn’t apply until that check as well.
So why did we receive letters stating it will affect January’s payment if it is a different years check????….but I will take it 🙂

    • Ann C.

Hi, Carol. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. We ask that members in our Blog community work with our offices with specific questions. You can call us at 1-800-772-1213, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., for assistance. Generally, you will have a shorter wait if you call later in the day. You can also contact your local Social Security office. We hope this helps.

I need to update SSN information, and I can’t even start describing how horrible the waiting has been — waiting hours just to speak with a person in the office, only to be rejected by unwilling and rude staff. Many times. And then Iv’e sent docs, but no response for months. Meanwhile, this screwed up my previous tax return and now I’m really in a mess.

    • Ann C.

Hi, Jason. We are sorry to hear about your situation. Please continue to work with your local office. You can ask to speak to a manager on your next call. I have questions about my benefits being reduced. Your online service cannot access my personal account. It tells me to call. I waited on hold for 1 hour and 35 minutes. What am I supposed to do?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Marie. We are sorry to hear that. Please be aware our call volume is higher than normal. For your security, we do not have access to private information in this venue. I have questions regarding my benefits and I am hopeless with on line service. I received a statement regarding my payments and need to have taxes deducted. Tried to use online but cannot connect. Can I get an appointment at local office in Midlothian 23114?

    • Crystal B.

Hi, Derek. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations, depending upon local office conditions. In order to have taxes withheld from your Social Security benefit, you must start by completing and submitting an IRS Voluntary Withholding Request Form (Form W-4V). On this form, you can choose to have 7, 10, 15, or 22 percent of your monthly benefit withheld. To find this form, and for more information on completing this process, visit Withholding Income Tax From Your Social Security Benefits. Thanks!

I just got married and need to change my name. Everything I have read says that I have to mail in my original documents like my birth certificate, marriage license, and drivers license. Those are sensitive documents that I’m not comfortable sending in. I’ve tried calling my local office but EVERY time I call I can’t get through and I’m sitting on the phone for an hour just listening to music. I want to make an appointment or figure something else out but I can’t get a hold of anybody so I’m very close just going to the SSA building. Can anybody help solve this problem?

    • Ann C.

Hi, Page. We are sorry to hear about your experience.  Please be aware our call volume is higher than normal. Social Security offices are currently open only for in-person appointments for limited, critical situations.
