Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Is all SSI suppose to get stimulus check on May 13 th if they haven’t received them yet ?

    • V.V.

Hi Lori, thank you for your question. Treasury, not Social Security, will be making automatic Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Unfortunately, we do not have information about the exact schedule for these payments. Continue to check the irs.gov/coronavirus page for updates.

They do have new info on the dates that they posted on this site may 7. I don’t know why they continue to answer people’s questions and misinform us. It’s ridiculous that we can’t get straight answers. Anyway there is a new link on hear (SSA) site. I can’t remember what the title is but I couldn’t just read it with my phone it’s a (PDF) that I had to download. It only took a few seconds literally. It could something to do with my phone IDK. Anyway there is a break down of different situations and dates if I can find the title after this comment I will repost exactly how to find it. Sorry I didn’t find it before the comment I just got frustrated and I’m sick of them giving us the run around

Go to the home page click on the yellow box that says Corona virus update. Somewhere in that newsletter you will see the blue text link to the updated payment schedule. I hope this helps. I’m beyond mad at these answers saying that they have no information when they just posted it yesterday. This is the problem nobody knows what is going on they are all confused and they are making mistakes daily witch is causing these delays. There should be a hot line by now. They could have already hired and trained people to answer these simple questions. The process in USA will be what destroys it. There are much simpler ways to do things but the process is always in the way

My wife has her stimulus deposit scheduled for May 13th and it has the wrong bank account number. How do we correct this and have it put on her direct Express card.?

    • Lori D.

They should have last info you receive ur SSI. Check that we’re it will go

    • V.V.

Hi Ronnie, thank you for your question. The Internal Revenue Service, which is part of the Department of Treasury, will be making Economic Income Payments to eligible people. Therefore, we do not have a schedule of these payments. You may find the IRS Get My Payment Frequently Asked Questions web page helpful.

What about SSDi on DirectExpress cards

    • David

You won’t recognize the account number. If you have direct express don’t worry about the account number being the same. I have read this in several different sites including IRS and SSA so you should be fine. Hope this helps.

      • Ronnie B.

        Thanks. I appreciate that.

        • David

No problem, I’m just trying to give the information that I have read myself and not hearsay. I called IRS today and actually got someone on the phone and they had a address from 20 years ago on file. She said I should have updated my information on the nonfilers site when I explained that the site says for us to take no action and the IRS would get our information from SSA she acted like she had no idea what I was talking about. I think there is alot of confusion at the IRS and the banks (direct express). I also think that the banks are holding the money for as long as they can for interest purposes I know that sounds crazy but that is millons of $ so it adds up when you hold it for a couple extra days.

bobby I am on social security I did not get my stimulus check SENDING CHECK TO DEAD PEOPLE DAM SHAME

SSI recipients should have direct deposit stimulus payment by May 13th now? Thought it was supposed to be early may I mean it’s only 5 days away I hope it comes on May 13th like most posts and articles I’ve read for SSI and VA. Just a question I don’t have kids so I never filled any of that non-filer stuff out cause it says not to unless you have dependents at least I hope I didn’t have to also I use direct deposit for my normal SSI checks will my money get added into my savings account the same way?

    • Derek R.

If I don’t receive my stimulus check by May 13th, I am going to camp out in front of my representative or senator’s office until they intercede. This is beyond ridiculous, they have my social security number and my status. I have never seen so much deflect and delay ,in my lifetime. At least keep us informed on why and when, OK? I talked with the lady at my local country social services office, and she told me, almost every one of her clients had not received theirs, something to do with low income and also, she said, there are not as many people working at IRS ,when there should be more. She also said, that if you think there will be a second stimulus package assistance ,you are naive and it would take even longer, if somehow it can’t traction!

My brother, the executor of my mother’s estate received a check for $1,200 for COVID-19 relief on 5/7/2020 because my mother had been a former social security recipient. My mother died in February 2018. How do we return the check?

    • V.V.

Hi Cheryl, thank you for using our blog. We are very sorry for your loss. Please check out the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center for details on how to return a payment. We hope this helps.
