Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

    This is bullcrap.

YOU, Social Security, NEED to get with the IRS to have people get their stimulus. And to be able to check up on it. It looks like it will be the 12th of NEVER when I get mine :(. And I’ve been on benefits since 199-freaking-5.

And PLEASE be more consistent. And start using modern code in your systems. COBOL is LONG DEAD. Why are you still spending money keeping ANCIENT mainframes alive when a 1U Intel Core i7 server running LINUX on a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack is MUCH CHEAPER???

If Facebook, Google, and 99.9% of the Internet can do this… why not the federal government? The .1% of the Internet still is running ancient code. While others are running on servers, and some of them are really VMs (virtual machines), some with a nearly infinite (in theory) number running simultaneously… it can be done. COBOL mainframes aren’t at the spec required to handle today’s Internet. Upgrade your tech.

Please, SSA, tell us WHEN and give us a DETAILED schedule of when they will go out. Not a vague “end of April” statement. THE EXACT DAY. People who need this money are the ones like me and others on SSA Survivors (me… and I am *not* claimed as a dependent), SSDI and SSI. Not these fools who brag on social media with selfies of junk they bought, most unnecessary. We need to get food. We need to get our rents paid. We need our essentials. Get the money out to us. Give us an EXACT date of WHEN it will post.

Otherwise, this stimulus is a complete failure. The FCC is still processing Form 605s for ham radio operators like me online and with swift efficiency, WHY CAN’T SSA AND IRS??

Say if a person is on ssi but they do not work or have any kids will they still get the 1,200 check.

Hi CJ, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

  5. Lori

My granddaughter (age 19) is permanently disabled and is receiving SSI. She lives in a home with 3 other disabled persons. She has guardianship through her mother. Her SSI goes directly to the county she lives in to pay for her housing (except a small living allowance). The county is currently her Rep. Payee since she is an adult. We are working on getting Rep Payee transferred to her mother or myself (or both) since I live closest to her. My question is whether she will be receiving an economic stimulus payment. This would be very beneficial for her to further her monthly personal care expenses (and it would go directly into the economy!) Thank you for any information you can provide

    • Repona

      Nope.

    • V.V.

Hi Lori, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

  6. GOG

I have yet to receive mine. I am on S.S.I. and only have a Direct Express Card.

  7. Fabian R.

I came on here to find that information as well for my parents. They are already receiving SS so I guess they’ll be able to receive the stimulus as well and not have to fill out any information.

    Thanks, Fabian Ramirez

For those wondering about the payment schedule for this, i was able to copy and paste this to my PC the other day, but i cannot find it again on the IRS live site so im going to put it up for everyone here. Hope that helps some. 🙂

What is the Stimulus Payment funding pattern?

The process and procedures for stimulus payment delivery will be consistent with how tax refund payments are made and the anticipated timeline is

    as follows:

April 10, 2020 – The IRS started processing the first batch of Stimulus Payments for 80 Million individuals
April 15, 2020 – Round 1 of Stimulus Payments were deposited into accounts
April 20, 2020 – Stimulus Checks will start processing (5 Million checks to be issued per week for up to 20 weeks/rounds)
April 22, 2020 – Round 2 of Stimulus Payments will be deposited into accounts
April 22, 2020 – Stimulus Payments for Social Security Recipients will be deposited into accounts
April 24, 2020 – Round 1 of Stimulus Checks will hit mailboxes
April 29, 2020 – Round 3 of Stimulus Payments will be deposited into accounts
May 1, 2020 – Round 2 of Stimulus Checks will hit mailboxes
May 6, 2020 – Round 4 of Stimulus Payments will be deposited into accounts
May 8, 2020 – Round 3 of Stimulus Checks will hit mailboxes
May 13, 2020 – Round 5 of Stimulus Payments will be deposited into accounts
May 15, 2020 – Round 4 of Stimulus Checks will hit mailboxes
May 20, 2020 – Round 6 of Stimulus Payments will be deposited into accounts
May 22, 2020 – Round 5 of Stimulus Checks will hit mailboxes

The IRS plans to make additional rounds of payments by direct deposit and paper checks weekly until all payments are distributed. Initially, these

additional rounds of payments will be made by direct deposit to taxpayers who provide direct deposit information to the IRS and who were not

already paid in the first round.

    • Victoria

Does this include direct express cards

    • M

Source please if you could try and find it?

    • Tamey H.

Seems some of us got left out in that April 22nd deposit round then because I sure didn’t get my payment and I’ve been on SSDI with the same direct deposit information for 10 years.

  9. Becky W.

If a parent is delinquent on their child support and is on SSI, will I, the other parent who is OWED the child support, receive that (delinquent father’s) stimulus money? Will the IRS automatically re-route those funds to me? I appreciate any reply, with thanks.

  10. Daniel S.

I’m on ssi and I’m married will my wife who doesn’t have an income have an income get her own check or will she be added on to mine on my direct express card or do I have to do something so she is added thank you

    • V.V.

Hi Daniel, thank you for your question. Check out the Economic Impact Payments Information Center under calculating the economic impact payment amount. For the spouse not receiving benefits, please provide information to the IRS by using the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool or by filing a federal income tax return. You must provide this additional information before your additional $1,200 payment is scheduled. Hopefully this helps.
