Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

I am on SSI benefits. I have a direct express card that my payments go on each month. I also have a 15 yr old son. I now understand that there is a deadline to add my son on the irs site by tomorrow but when I did that it came back saying payment was denied because I did not supply bank info. ALL I have is the direct express card. Had it for years now. I have never needed the bank and routing number info for that…now I do!!! But I don’t know how to locate that info. I have been calling social security and my direct express card customer service for the last two weeks and , literally, NO ONE is working or available to answer this question. How do I access the bank and routing number info for my direct express card so that I can enter it for payment for the $500 my son should get. I know I will automatically get the 1200 on my card but can’t properly add him. Please Please help. I just heard the deadline is tomorrow. I need to locate my bank and routing infor for my direct express card. Who can tell me what that is.
    ?

I don’t know anyone who’s been able to answer that question. I filled out the non filers form on April 10 to add my son. I put my regular bank info in and now they tell us to leave it blank because it will automatically go on our direct Express card. I have no idea where mine is going to go and they are telling people to leave that info blank. Your saying that it won’t let you leave it blank like they are instructing us to do. It’s getting to the point where it’s ridiculous.

I have a question. I have a 32-year-old son who is mentally ill. I do claim him as a dependent and he is on SSI. Will he be receiving a stimulus check or will he not get one because I claimed him last year. Should I not claim him this year?

Social Security Administration gave me SSI that I did not ask for, do not want, did not apply for, did not tell then I wanted it…they gave me in March 2020 $194.00 for back payments (I came off SSI in 2018 or 2017)… and made seem I told them I wanted SSI…I get Social Security retirement…I want Economic Impact Payment under that not under SSI…I do not know at this time how to come off SSI because Soc. Sec. Administration local office is closed…I called the national phone number but was kept on hold long time…also some of my outgoing calls get switched…when I call the national number the automated systems tells me enter my social security number…yet previously when person answers they want my social security number and tells me they cannot help me if I do not give to it to them…some times I found I am talking with impostors…so I really do not want to call…the local off in Philadelphia, PA has notice on window with a phone number to call…I called no one ever answered

I do not want to lose my Economic Impact Payment for Social Security retirement….someone PLEASE HELP ME URGENTLY…I AM VERY LOW INCOME

Hi Sandra. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

Has anyone had a deposit on their direct express card yet??

    • victoria f.

      yes

      • Gary H.

How do you know this. I have not heard a thing about when payments will go out

  5. Deb

I have a question my husband is on SSI and I am have not worked for 4 years. Will I get a stimulus check or how do I go about it? I went to the IRS.gov non filers portal but it seems as though I have to file married and it looks like I’m claiming him so is that correct or I’m confused?

  6. Cindy

I turn 62 this year, my birthday is May 14. I filed for social security retirement on April 3, but will not receive any checks until July 15! Am I eligible for a stimulus check? If so, do I use the non filers page to input my info?

    • Rob

Yes and yes do it now

  7. Gsyle

Is the get my payment portal only for taxpayers and people with dependents?

    • V.V.

Hi there. You may find the IRS Get My Payments Frequently Asked Questions web page helpful to determine what action you may need to take. Hopefully this helps.

      • Kevin H.

Bad bot. (Because this comment from a “Social Security Employee” reeks of bot-like behavior. And on Reddit, some bot accounts respond to the text “bad bot” and then shut up.)

If this was Reddit, I’d downvote your comment and encourage others to do the same.

You did not read the question, Vonda!!!

The OP said, and I quote,
“Is the get my payment portal only for taxpayers and people with dependents?”

BECAUSE PEOPLE ON BENEFITS CANNOT CHECK UP ON THEIR STATUS!!!

People who need this money the MOST are on benefits from SSA and instead of getting help or any useful info, they get this nonsense instead:
        “Payment Status Not Available”

Oh… Jeez Louise. That’s helpful, Vonda… NOT. The OP probably went to the site linked and was asking a really good question. Because it seems like the left hand (IRS) doesn’t know what the right hand (SSA) is doing.

In official SSA forms and whatnot, SSA states they “share records” with other government agencies, and this sharing takes place CONSTANTLY. But it seems like it didn’t happen this time.

This needs to be fixed now. If the SSA was like a GitHub repo, I’d flag the repo for violations of GitHub TOS with misinformation like this.

So, I say, to the OP:

Unfortunately, yes.. Even the IRS site says “If you get SSA Benefits […] you will get the Payment Status Not Available error.” (I’m paraphrasing, but you get it.)

Poor handling of the situation, SSA.

I have no dependent children and have never filed taxes. i recieve ssi by paper check. If i go to the portal and put in my intormation for direct deposit will it come direct deposit or will it still come by mail like my ssi does?

    • V.V.

Hi Emerald, thank you for your question. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS.

      • Tamey H.

I believe you were given an answer that is generic. I think you can go into the irs system and add your direct deposit information so that your check can be sent that way and received faster rather than waiting on a paper check that could take forever. You could look into this on irs.gov but I believe my information is correct.
I hope this helps more than the one that I’ve actually seen as a response several times in response to different questions.. worded exactly the same way. Good luck.

I’m a payee for my 28 yr old son who is on SSI. Will we get one stimulus payment or 2 separate ones?

The problem is I have a daughter whos 17 they gave me and my husband the 2,400 but no the 500 for her any ideas why is was not added and the IRS has a deadline for the 500 for tomorrow

    • lynn

      ***Need answer Quick**
Husband receives disability, under that I get spousal benefit, and our 14 yr old gets child benefits….all off of his dad. I am rep payee for both of them. Money comes deposited direct express for all 3 on one card each month. **Would I still have go file this to claim her? Or would it automatically come as it normally does every month? **
I don’t want to screw things up, but I don’t want to miss out on her $500 either, lol
