Supplemental Security Income Recipients Will Receive Automatic COVID-19 Economic Impact Payments

The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

I will never work a day in life. Do what you want with your pennies.

      • Jess

David, really? Are you “Mr Man” coming into the social security blog bragging about your financial status? Some how I doubt you have wealth. If I had the money that you claim to have, I would have much better things to do than piss my life away bothering elderly and disabled people. Come on now. You are probably on disability yourself, bored and playing obnoxious games. Not everyone that collects is “garbage”. Many of us have legit disabilities.. and despite what the ignorant nay-sayers of this country say, it is god damn difficult to get on this program. There are many people that should qualify, and are denied. You obviously hold conversation well, so my guess is you are some nut that requires a lot of meds. Go take them, and come back down to reality. And before you even say something idiotic back, I am blind in one eye, deaf and have a broken back from a childhood car accident. Some of us are LEGIT. Thank you.

Yeah? I live in Malibu right on the coast, next to Jennifer Aniston. Get the hell out of here. And I would think a person would know how to spell the name of the city that he lives in.

  3. Cynthia

Hello, question , I received a non filers form status of “ return approved” but processing for eligibility. Tax topic 152. And I was told I no further need to take action. I was claimed as a permanently disabled 24 year old, by my mother. My mother filed head of household, I receive SSI benefits, do not work, and do not file taxes. I did file the Non- Filers form. My status still say Approved. What does this actually mean? Everyone is saying I wouldn’t receive a stimulus check for $1200, but I have been “approved, processing eligibility, tax topic 152. No further action needed.” Help please?

    • patrick

That was not a stimulus status, it was the loser status.

      • J-Kid

You should take the A and T off your name and just be called Prick.

        • patrick

sure, and then you can have a lick, bitch

  4. Michael C.

I’m on disability and I get my disability on my diret express card when I receive my 1200 check on my card

    • V.V.

Hi Michael, thank you for your question. Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who do not have qualifying children under age 17 do not need to take any action with the IRS. You will automatically receive your $1,200 economic impact payment directly from the IRS. You should receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as you would normally receive your Social Security benefits. Treasury expects automatic payments for Social Security beneficiaries no later than the end of April and automatic payments for SSI recipients no later than early May. We hope this helps.

  5. Marvin F.

I did not file a return for tax season s 18-19 I applied for ss in September of 19. I received my first ss payment in January 20 so I will not get a ss1099 until January or February 21. I have been trying to get the IRS my Direct deposit information but every site just sends me to a mountain of red tape. Will I get a stimulus payment and what is the simplest way to get my dp information to the IRS

    • Peter

How often does a. Bird shit on people? That’s how lucky you may be to get one

    • V.V.

Hi Marvin, thanks for using our blog. New beneficiaries since January 1, 2020, of either Social Security or SSI benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, should go to the IRS’s Non-Filers website to enter your information. Hopefully this helps.

  6. rod

I have SSI and was claimed as dependent in 2018 but I just filed 2019 taxes as head of household (not a dependent). Will I get the stimulus?

  7. rod

I have SSI and was claimed dependent by my daughter in 2018. I just filed 2019 not as a dependent but head of household. Will I get the stimulus?

    • V.V.

Hi Rod, thank you for your question. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

  8. PersonintheKnow

You did not receive anything last night no one did stop lying and spreading false information and giving people hope

  9. Giles L.

800.00 was deposited in to my account some time last night. I do not have a direct express card

    • Felicia C.

      Don’t be an idiot.

  10. Patricia

I don’t know if anyone has asked this question yet if they have I apologize right now for asking. I am on SSD and both of my children are on SSI I am their payee all of our checks go to the same bank account which SS has.
My question is Do I need to go in and do a non filer for my children or will they automatically get the stimulus payments deposited into my account? They were added to my 2018 taxes last year and I did file a tax return this year with the freebie irs site even though I did not have to file.

    • Peter

Your kids don’t get any, why cause you claim them on your taxes, but you get yours and the 500.00 each from having two kids

    • V.V.

Hi Patricia, thank you for using our blog. People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, and who have qualifying children under age 17 and those receiving SSI who have qualifying children under age 17 should go to the IRS’s webpage to enter your information instead of waiting for your automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to your $1,200 individual payment. If Social Security beneficiaries and SSI recipients in this group do not provide information to the IRS soon, you will have to wait to receive $500 per qualifying child.

      • Will B.

WRONG! Sorry Patricia but most of us have filled out the correct forms, but still no direct deposit…I’ve been given notice of eviction, my car is about to be repossessed, we dont have food, but we are staying in to save lives…..just might not be our own…this is absurd.
