The Treasury Department announced that Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department.  Treasury anticipates these automatic payments to go out no later than early May.

SSI recipients with no qualifying children do not need to take any action in order to receive their $1,200 economic impact payment. The payments will be automatic.

SSI recipients who have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should now go to the IRS’s webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Payment Info section to provide their information. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If SSI beneficiaries in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, they will have to wait until later to receive their $500 per qualifying child.

This is great news for SSI recipients, and I want to remind recipients with qualifying children to go to IRS.gov soon so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for. I also want to thank the dedicated employees of the Treasury Department, Social Security, and the Internal Revenue Service for making this happen and working non-stop on this issue.

SSI Recipients with Dependent Children Should Still Go To IRS.gov to Provide Their Information

Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries (who don’t normally file taxes) will also qualify for automatic payments of $1,200 from Treasury. These payments are anticipated to start arriving around the end of April.

The Treasury Department, not Social Security, will make these automatic payments to beneficiaries. Recipients will generally receive the automatic payments by direct deposit, Direct Express debit card, or by paper check, just as they would normally receive their SSI or Social Security benefits.

For those SSI and Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, with dependent children, who use Direct Express debit cards, additional information will be available soon regarding the steps to take when claiming children under 17, on the IRS website.

Please note that the agency will not consider Economic Impact Payments as income for SSI recipients, and the payments are excluded from resources for 12 months.

For more information about Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability insurance beneficiaries, please see our most recent blog.

The eligibility requirements and other information about the Economic Impact Payments can be found on the IRS website. In addition, please continue to visit the IRS for the latest information.

Early May disabled people get their money early may???? Is this a joke??? Is the president trying to make us suffer? We dont have control over pur situation you know? We were promised ths money by april 17. I get $756 a month and my rent is $700 plus utility. I also have a wife I have to care for who is a legal immigrant. She finally got her green card two months ago to work but lost her job because of the virus just two weeks into her new job. We have no more food. We are desperate. Im going to have to sell a family heirloom that the family has had for over 40 years just to eat the rest of the month.
Im not a trump hater but I dont love him either. Im not political I just dont understand why the most vulnerable people are being left to rot.
We are owed this money we are not “lucky” to be given $1,200. Im grateful to be receiving it but that doesnt mean Im thankful to the goverment. We wouldnt be in this mess if Trump and the government took this virus situation seriously 5 months ago.
This money is a reimbursement. We are absolutely entitled to this stimulus money its some lucky gift. This mpney is owed to the american people. I may be disabled but I DO serve my community and I work very hard when am doing it despite my disability. $1,200 divided amongst the whole of America is nothing compared to what the government frivolously spends every year on total bullshit that ends up coming from our pockets in the end. Stuff that wed never agree to if we had a say.

Im 41 yrs old and on ssi disability. The past 2 years my GF of 20years has been claiming me on her taxes, does this mean iam not eligible for the stimulus check?

      • Cyn

Yes it means you won’t get a check. If you’re filed as a dependent you don’t qualify

    • bigbird

Its not Trump. its the IRS to blame they are the ones to blame for being so slow. The government should have let Social Security pay us instead of IRS. It would have been quicker that way.

    • daverdowens

The treatment of disabled people is pure incompetence. It should have been paid on the 17th. Wasn’t that fun the day that it was paid to SSDI and SSI retirement was the same day that it was clarified that SSI disability DIDN’T have to sign up. So much for the CARES ACT! Yes, the Treasury should have been in charge just as they dole out the SSI checks to recipients banks.

My dad receives SSI and only received a $600 stimulus check. Wondering why it was not the full amount of $1200?

    • V.V.

Hi Shannon, thank you for using our blog. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments web page for details regarding payments. We hope this is helpful.

      • Chameeka

Are you saying your dad who is on ssi got his payment and he didnt file taxes

  3. Robert S.

I don’t understand do I or don’t I file information on the non Filer form. My wife, my 12 year old and 17 year old all receive SSA-1099’s every year individually under each of their own social security numbers. I also receive one for my social security check.
So do we file under Non Filer or because they each receive a monthly individual benefit payment will it be automatic?

    • V.V.

Hi Robert, thanks for using our blog. People who receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability insurance benefits, who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019, and who have qualifying children under age 17 should go to the IRS’s webpage to enter your information instead of waiting for your automatic $1,200 Economic Impact Payment. By taking proactive steps to enter information on the IRS website about you and your qualifying children, you will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to your $1,200 individual payment. If Social Security beneficiaries and SSI recipients in this group do not provide information to the IRS soon, you will have to wait to receive $500 per qualifying child.

Hi so I have a question because I haven’t worked to file taxes in 2018 or 2019 and my husband is on disability, how do I get a stimulus? I have been taking care of my husband so I’m not able to hold a job. We live off his disability check. Last time we filed taxes was 2017 and it was with me as head of household. Do I need to file the simple form with both of us on it to get my money? Will that stop him from receiving his on his debit card? I see things about dependent children under 17 but nothing about spouses.

  5. Laura

I am on Disability and I have a child who gets survivor benefits as well as 2 who receive benefits from my disability. I was proactive and filed the simple tax form based on the initial information stating I would have to. At that time I found out the two that receive benefits based on my disability were claimed as dependents on their fathers taxes which was basically fraud. So I was only able to claim my one child who gets survivors benefits and because I wasn’t getting a refund I couldn’t enter direct deposit information. Then when the process was changed so that SS recipients didn’t have to file, I couldn’t do either of the IRS fast track forms “Get my payment” nor the “Non-Filers” to put in my dependents and direct deposit information. I get kicked from the non-filer form because I filed and get an error reference number 109 from the Get my payment form as you have to answer wether you had to pay or got a refund as neither applies. I’m soooo frustrated I want to scream. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • V.V.

Hi Laura, you may find the IRS Online Tool Guide helpful to determine what action you may need to take. Hopefully this information is helpful.

      • Laura

That tool is no help unfortunately. ?

        • Anitakins

Hey Laura sounds like you having a hard time..I think you might have to wait 24 hours to get back into the system, but you are correct you have to go to the non filers payment to claim the child that receives survivor benefits..to get that extra 500 otherwise you have to file next year to get it..as for yourself if you’re getting ssdi or SSI the “get my payment”app will not work for you if you go to IRS.gov get my payment it will say your information is not yet available it happen to me too.so you already know you get the1200..try and see if you can get into the non filers portal again if not, try to get someone from a tax refund business on the phone, so they can give you better insight, to what you can do… hope this was helpful sending light and blessings to you and yours…

Social Security, why don’t y’all just tell us the truth already. IRS are not distributing these payment, YOU guys are under IRS supervision, this is why there’s an hold up because you guys are PURPOSELY waiting for the new month to begin to distribute the stimulus check, people who are Direct Deposit enabled should had no problem getting this right away, but because you guys are doing this shit on purpose holding back, we have to suffer for the next 2-3 weeks waiting on this god damn stimulus money. Pathetic.

    • Sha

      Have faith. Wow!

    • ssdi i.

      HEY CAMERON
YOU NAILED IT. THEY ARE PUTTING OFF DISTRIBUTING THE SSDI CHECKS UNTIL MAY SO THAT THEY CAN USE THIS TIME TO WORK ON SSI AND EVERYTHING ELSE BECAUSE THEY HAD SSDI PAYMENTS SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 17TH – 24TH BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAVE OUR 1099S AND WE ARE THE EASIEST GROUP TO SEND TE PAYMENT TO. THEY JUST ARENT GOING TO SEND IT BECAUSE WE AS A GROUP HAVE ALLOWED OURSELVES TO BE DE-PRIORITIZED AS SOON AS WE DIDNT FIGHT AGAINST BEING LUMPED IN WITH SSI RECIPIENTS. THATS WY THE LANGUAGE IS THE END OF APRIL WE WILL GET IT AND SSI IN EARLY MAY. YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE IT WILL TAKE LIKE ONE DAY FOR THEM TO SEND THE SSDI PAYMENTS AND THREE WEEKS JUST TO START THE SSI BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SET UP WITH 1099S.
THATS WHY I SAID IT REALLY OUR FAULTS FOR NEVER FIGHTING BACK OR MAKING SURE WE ARE NOT LOSING OUR SMALL PERKS BY BEING LUMPED IN WITH SSI WHICH IS MOSTLY A GROUP OF LIFE LONG FREE LOADERS. SO NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL ATLEAST MOST OF THE WORK TO PAY SSI GETS DONE BECAUSE THEY JUST DONT LIKE HOW IT LOOKS IF SSD GETS OUR STIMULUS THIS WEEK AND SSI HAS TO WAIT THREE OR FOUR WEEKS IF NOT MORE. THATS WHY ITS APRIL 17TH THE DAY THE WAYS AND MEANS COMMISSION SAID WOULD BE THE FIRST DAY OF SSD CHECKS AND LITERALLY NO ONE IN AMERICA ON SSDI HAS RECEIVED ONE UNLESS THEY FILED TAXES IN 2018.
BECAUSE THEY ARENT COMING THIS WEEK AND IF THEY WERE THEY WOULD HAVE JUST SAID THAT INSTEAD OF THE END OF THE MONTH WHICH REALLY WILL BE MAY 1ST TO THE 15TH JUST LIKE I SAID A WHOLE MONTH FOR ALOT OF US ALL BECAUSE THESE SSI BUMS DIDNT WANT TO FILL OUT THR DAMN NON FILERS FORM SMFH BUT GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

        Take your meds, boomer.

      • oneboomertoanother

it’s going to be held off as long as possible for boomers.

    • Sean

You are completely right. They think because we always live poor that we can wait another 3 weeks with no food or resources. I get $756 a month and my rent is $700 plus utility. I have no food. Im simply eating canned vegetables as a meal twice a day. And im running out.
The Government is NOTHING without the people. They act like we are lucky to be getting this money when we are actually entitled to it, they owe us. They didnt take the virus seriously when it first presented itself. This oversight has cost lives and it causes serious grief and struggle for all of us in america esspecially the disabled. We are the easiest to give the money to, its all set up already with our direct wxpress. The IRS will never have the decency to be honest and just say that they are waiting ( for their own convenience ) for our normal checks so its easier for them that way.
Its all set up how hard can it be?
I have no one to help me. I provide for my wife too with my ssi check. She is a legal immigrant who just got her green card. she wasnt allowed to work for a year then when finally She started working she loses the job two weeks in bcuz of the virus. So my wife and me have $15 to survive and feed us until May. Thanks IRS you really are stepping up for people in their time of need.
Despite my disability I do my best to serve the community. I play music and I am part of a trash pickup crew for my city. Everyone judges you if youre on ssi. I dont have control over my situation, I do my best to be productive and contribute. No matter we are seen as useless worms.

      • Nunya

Go to food pantries and stop whining. I have even less money than you and I eat very well. You are clearly doing something wrong and living well beyond your means.

  7. Terrie C.

My son claimed us on his taxes. Me an my husband r on disability. will we still get our check on our direct deposit card or will it come with his check

    • V.V.

Thank you for the question, Terrie. Please visit the IRS Economic Impact Payments Information Center to answer your questions about eligibility, payment amounts, what to expect, when to expect it and more. Hope this helps!

      • Mike C.

My adult son is on ssi and has a payee service.will his stimulus money be sent to the payee service the same way his ssi is sent there?

    • J-O

No, unfortunately, you guys won’t get a stimulus check because you are claimed dependent. I’m also in the same boat. Hopefully, they will change the rules for us, but it doesn’t look too good.

  8. Winky

I wanted to know since I receive both ssi and ssdi will it be just one payment from the stimulus?

  9. Buffy

    Someone please tell me
I get SSI my husband is self employed sense I
Don’t have to do taxes he claims me on his taxes will I get a check or not and if I do when should I expect it and will it go in my bank or his bank? THANK YOU to any one that knows

    • V.V.

I believe the same exact thing the payout for ssdi and ssi may fall on your next pickup date or on a certain preset date where they can give the majority of recipients their cash ..its would be easier for them to do that then to mail or put monies in for people at different times, I think their aim is to be be systematic like how they did the tax payers…so I wouldn’t stress about it because eventually we will get it…the confusing part is the non filer tax form I think that has thrown many in a loop from what I understand if you have dependents under 17 especially if they get ssi, or you get ssi you have to filed to get that extra money, if you did not filed taxes..otherwise you will only get 1200..if you are a dependent no matter your age you will not get a check..the person that claims you gets the unearned credit..so find out if someone is claiming you and have a talk with them…otherwise I’m guessing people are going to be dragging family members to court..its crazy. But love of money would do that.

    • MuffinTop

Dragging people to court? I hope so. People should not be illegally claiming others as dependants when they’re not.

      • tina P.

Wow…small world. Trying to figure out if me and babygyrl get a check since my mom claims me and she is claimed by her father but financially I take care of us so they get a check but i dont ? smh Not right. Just sent Congress a letter telling them they need to change this rule ASAP
